2011 is coming - any resolutions yet?

Every winter I normally do my 'winter tune-up'. Except last couple of years have been too much for me to focus and get through it all. Having gone through the gamut now with family issues, mental health, financial....I can finally focus again on my tune-up.

2011 tune-up will include:

Weight goals

Refocus on healthier meals, portions and associated habits

Mental health

Spiritual journey - not defined by religion but a spiritual self belief

Review and expand on course material from group therapy, re-do assignments to see where I am at today

This is enough for me. I could list a million things but the most important is my overall health. It's a constant effort to shake off negative thoughts that have plagued me for years, let go of family bitterness so we can just live and let live. My best friend tells me I'm getting better at this. It dawned on me yesterday that all of my anger the last few years with family was in line with a grieving process of letting go to live and let live. That hit me like a ton of bricks in a sense.

Resolutions to me are something from the heart. I can only make them happen if I truly want them to rather than just lip service according to the time of year.

Have you thought of anything for 2011 that is important to you?

Mine too is Health. More exercise and I want to lose some pounds.....not going to decide how many but I am carrying too much weight around my middle. I appreciate all the steroids and appetite stimulants that the oncologist gave me to keep me eating and healthy as possible but I carried my food choices to the extreme and consequently have some excess weight that I want to get rid of as soon as possible. No crash diets just the good old weight watchers way.

My only resolution is to make no resolutions. I have a full ToDo list as it is!

hmm. i guess theres no way to edit original postings (or there is and im just not seeing the way). anyway, ill repost the photos in this post. so apparently there are at least three types of bushes on the rental property's front and sides. ÃÂ there is this (boxwood): ÃÂ then theres this second type. it has nasty thorns that i forgot all about. berberis?: ÃÂ and then i saw that the ones on the side of the house are probably different from the other two. those guys were trimmed last year by about 1/3rd and i waited for them to recover but they never really did: ÃÂ lastly, this isnt a bush but it grew right next to one. i didnt plant it. it just popped up. what is this? ÃÂ sues comment "and they are bad shrubs, ...ie invasive non native ones" had me thinking that maybe i dont need to replace the bushes with exactly the same shrubs? was she talking about the possible berberis? im so grateful, by the way, for all this help. i feel encouraged!

Where did i just read that sea holly is terrible invasive? Can't remember offhand, but after i read the article - it wasn't just about sea holly, but a lot of other things too - and it was written by someone is zone 5 or 6. So i guess we're safe from that here! LOL Of course, there are one or two other things i could mention.... I haven't visited the back of the house since all the snow on the weekend, but anything that was up in front is still there, just a little sad-looking. I don't know if the yellow mammoth crocuses will bloom, or if they're freeze-dried in the bud stage. :(

ooh, Baileycat! Gossards..*goes green* Hurrah! I'm trying out more of his things and am willing to pay the $$ (within reason) because I'm trying to go for things with high bud counts and great reblooming to get more outof the season...and I need the winter hardiness (it gets depressing to lose so many over the winter when I worked so hard for "flower spending $$) I splurged on "Supermodel" and "Tornado Bird" and also got on LA "Lemon Parchment", Primal Scream, and Broadway Charmer,Westbourne Easter Egg Hunt and Westbourne Snow Cream . I really want Snake in the Grass, Boo! and Shark Attack ..hope they have some left! I'm trying to hold back as I also have a ridiculous amount of seedlings from last year's thinking "wow! I can buy millions of seeds for the same price as daylilies".. butmost of them are buried in small containers feet deep in snow, so I guess we'll see what survives the winter :)

Annette, in spite of its long DTM, the BE#3 might make it with an early start. It has proven to be highly disease resistant in my climate, which might help it to survive cooler weather. Only one way to find out. Drloyd, I say... roll the dice. And add my voice to those hoping for a much better bean year in 2011. Given the wide separation between my location, Drloyd's, and Fusion's, 2010 was an extraordinarily bad year for beans. Great year here for soybeans & yardlongs, though. Since both of my planned trips were canceled this year (to SSE, and to the AHSC gathering in Kentucky) I didn't collect many new varieties for 2011. A shame, since I hear that Fusion brought his whole collection to Kentucky this year. ;-) Beans - Because of the bad weather last summer, there probably won't be too many new bean trials for me in 2011... it will, in large part, be a repeat of 2010. BE#3 and "Soissons Vert" will need to be regrown for good seed, as will "Clem & Sarah's Big Bean". I'll also be growing a much larger crop of the unnamed Serbian pole that had such wonderful flavor as a shelly. The seed has a three-color pattern very similar to "Hidatsa Shield Figure", but is more closely akin to "Snowcap" in size & shape. The only new bean variety planned so far is "Doloff", which was supposed to have been planted last year, but never made it into the ground. There was also an apparent cross or mutation in my BE#3 last summer; every seed on one plant had small white spots on a red background. I'll be re-growing it (hopefully under a tent) to see if any of the seed breeds true. The pole wax bean trial is still to be determined, probably the nearly extinct "B.B. Wax" or the heirloom "Schwarze Witwe". Runner beans - "Bianco de Spagna" is another bean which was planned last summer, but never planted due to weather. I'll try it again in 2011. Limas - "Carolina Red" is a pole lima that I've wanted to grow for quite some time, and thanks to a trade, it will get a trial in my home garden. I'm still wavering over which lima to grow large-scale in my rural plot. The medium-large pole varieties "Madagascar" (red & white) and "North Star" (white) were both grown on poor ground for their first trial, so I would like to test their performance in more fertile soil... and normally I grow a pole variety in my main/rural plot as part of my barrier crop strategy. However, I really want to grow the heirloom bush "Cave Dweller, Black Seeded" on a large scale. My love of limas may yet drive me to turn over a garden in a third location (it scares me that I'm actually considering that). Yardlongs - If Evergreen Y. H. is operational this year (their site appears to be) I will be growing a trial of one (or two?) of their more unique yardlongs. I'll also be doing a larger planting of either the "Thailand Pole" which I grew in 2009 (very smooth, almost white pods) or the Philippine yardlong "Sierra Madre" (tender to snap bean width). "Yancheng Bush" has made my "must grow" list, since it is so much earlier than the others. Several of my dry cowpeas require replenishment, I'll have to integrate some of them with my yardlong growouts. Peas - This will be my third year attempting to stabilize the table pea "Purple Podded Parsley", from breeder Alan Kapuler. Last summer's crop was very encouraging, nearly all purple pods. I'm very optimistic, hopefully this year the purple pod color will be fixed & I can begin to select for yield & flavor. Quite a few of my soup peas are in need of being replenished, haven't decided on varieties yet. Soybeans - I was very impressed with the black & green edamame "Natsu Kurakake" last year, but it was a seed crop, and I only ate two meals. And I almost lost this variety the first year!!! This year I hope to grow enough to freeze some, and further increase the seed. The main focus of my soybean trials this year will be high-yield Northern-adapted field varieties... but I always grow several edamame varieties as well. 2011 will be my final year of new soybean trials from the collection of the late Robert Lobitz, since the seed I obtained from his estate is all from 2006 & germination is beginning to drop off. I'll be looking for good homes for the remainder... perhaps in Canada, since many of Robert's field varieties were selected for short seasons. Many other legumes will be planted, mostly to replenish seed in my collection which is nearing the end of its storage life. I should have a complete list by the time someone starts the annual "what are you growing" thread. Which if memory serves me, was started by Dean last Spring... chomping at the bit, eh Dean? ;-)

I have a few.

1. I am going to tone up my muscles and fit into the pants that are now hanging in the back of my closet.

2. I am tired of being pulled in 3 different directions at work. So my goal is to do 1 thing...do it well.and then move on.

3. Finish my book and get it published.

Ruthie_tx I still use WW during the winter months. I find it helps me to focus on enjoying my meals again in an unrushed manner.

Cynic no resolutions sounds best in your situation. I wish you luck with your to do list.

SamKaren your book sounds like it is rolling along. Doing 1 thing at a time can often become lost at work when priorities bounce all over the place. Sometimes your email has to wait, phone calls can go to messages. They say more time is lost at work because of email traffic. I've been there. Toning up again will also help you concentrate on one thing at a time too. Striking a balance again.

Mine is to become a better housekeeper.

I've already started and hope to keep it up...but we'll see how it goes, LOL! I tend to put in my daily 8 hours of work and ignore taking care of the house when I'm done working for the day, but I'm trying to improve in that respect.

work on my health, continue the weight loss even though it is slow going it is downward, continue to work on the diabetes this last A1C was down to 6.0 which is where I was aiming for now I am aiming for getting it even lower but I am very happy at 6 (so is my doc). And continue going through what ever it takes for the specialist to figure out what is happening to me and take steps to improve.
Eating healthy, moving more, and keeping positive.

Mine is just to try to be a happier person. I have decided that to do so is a choice, I cannot change most of the things that happen, the economy, health issues, other disappointments, but I will do my best to face each day with a positive attitude.

One is to continue to be strict about what I eat, which is more of a serious life decision than a New Year's resolution.

Another is to organize my time now that I'm not working, in order to accomplish what I need to. I want to write more, work on digitizing my dad's photography, and take on some home improvement projects.

And see more of my friends!

Well now that the holiday feasting is over and the temptations are not so great, I can concentrate on going back to eating healthy again... and getting back into my size 8/10 wardrobe... Taking care of myself is important, but making someone else happy is more important and if I can do that, then the rest will happen as matter of course. The things I will be involved in is mission work. There are so many people living alone and without reliable transportation out here in the hills... this is an area where I can help.

Basicly I just want to make myself available for my Creator to use me when and where He chooses... and unlike 2010, in 2011 I will stay away from negative people and situations that are so hate filled that they only serve to drag you down.

Nice thought, but I always remember the analogy of the flight attendants' instructions on a plane, who tell parents that if the oxygen masks are released, they should put their own masks on before their children's . . . because you can't help someone else if you're not breathing.

I think I'm following Cynic's plan.....I've broken so many resolutions in my lifetime that it is pointless to make more. Great good luck to those who are doing so, however.

Just going to try to keep on remembering all my "Blessings" and from whence they came. Take more time to listen when others need to talk. This is a great place for that. Also to make sure I sit on my back porch, whenever possible, and watch the sun come up and watch all of God's little creatures start their day.

A lot of people don't believe in resolutions but I'm here to tell you that you should just keep on making them and one day you just might have the energy and will power to carry through. I smoked for so many years and I wanted to quit but "it was just easier" not to bother with the hard work and say I just can't do it.......One year I made the same resolution as always to quit smoking and one day led to the next and then the next became a week and the week a month and all of a sudden I said.....Holy Sheet....I think I've quit smoking.....and it was because once again.I made that same old resolution but this particular time.....I actually did it so don't be afraid....even if you break your resolution......just keep on keeping on.....

Best wishes to everyone who has made N.Y. resolutions - I pray you can succeed with them.

I don't make N.Y. resolutions, either - I just try to live the best I can, one day at a time. I am so thankful for all GOD has blessed me with and daily I ask HIM to guide me to make the best choices - I do need to control my impatient nature in 2011, so will definently work on that!

Above all, every day be grateful for what I have been given.

Then continue with my diet and excerise regime that seems to be working.

Next is to improve my mental health by reading more and challenging myself more mentally.

Surround myself with positive-minded people. I think that makes alot of difference in one's attitude towards everyday challenges.

Although its not the least important of these, work on my relationship with DIL. It may stress me out but I have my other resolutions to support me with this one!

Well, here are some from year's past:
2006: I will get my weight down below 180 pounds.
2007: I will follow my new diet religiously until I get below 200 pounds.
2008: I will develop a realistic attitude about my weight.
2009: I will work out 3 days a week.
2010: I will try to drive past a gym at least once a week.

I want to lose weight and get in better shape. That will happen if I get back into my extreme housecleaning routine of my younger years.

I want to start getting rid of "stuff". Maybe I'll learn about ebay...or just stock the local Goodwill store.

With hiking and trips to the gym, I have the healthy lifestyle fairly covered. Could definitely eat smarter.

But... what I really want to do in 2011 is read all the user guides and manuals for every electronic/high-tech device in the house so I know what it's capable of and the proper way to hook everything up so our two year old, very expensive master remote control works properly.

I also want to finish organizing all of our photos (paper and digital) and scan the paper pics.

And lastly ... I want to learn how to use a camera on manual. I yearn to fully understand aperture vs. shutter speed vs. film speed. And then I will deserve to move on to a decent SLR camera.

Oh, I dream too much.
