my first daughter was born. She is someone to be proud of. Ever since she left home, she made it on her own, even when it got tough.

Not that mom and dad didn't extend a helping hand at times... but it came from us, no asking from her side.

Congrats, Moni, on a good job of raising a good citizen. For us to get our kids from infancy to self sufficient adults...is a job well done of course a little credit goes to you daughter as well. Bravo to both.

Adrienne, It's timely you should post this, because just this morning I was thinking, "Well, here comes the 'Anniversary Season' again." I lost my mother in May ... 19 years ago. A very close friend in July ... 13 years ago. My father in July ... 36 years ago. So, even though it's been so very many years, these dates still and always will mean a great deal. I think of these loved ones all day long on these anniversaries .... and while I think of the loss and all that they have missed, I always end up spending more time thinking about how blessed I am to have had them in my life at all, even if just for a little while. The days are bittersweet, but much more sweet than bitter. Some years I mention to others what day it is for me, other years I don't. But I carry my loved ones very close to me on those days. Yes, Socks. We still are not happy about the separation, of course. We were spoiled when they lived in Los Angeles, 75 minutes away and close to her uncle and brother. Nowadays, she visits 4 times a year, and we take the boys at Spring Break so that they can tour Napa wineries with his parents for his birthday celebration annually. We call and email a lot. We are happier having them visit us (than us flying to Dallas) and so have not been to Texas with Grandpa offering plane tickets for visits here whenever they can come. Here, they can get around to see friends and ex classmates, and she always has one of the cars at her disposal too. So it works, but not as well as when they were in LA. However, they are happier there than living in crowded, expensive big Los Angeles with a job he loves, so we are happy for them. Having moved all over the country ourselves, we know we can't expect our kids to stay close. They love the quieter suburb with a nicer home, job, schools, and neighborhood. It is hard to leave family and friends, but they are getting to know great folks there too. He graduated from TCU and has a few college couple friends in the area, and she is getting active as a parent volunteer at their schools and meeting other moms. They left really wonderful friends in San Francisco and then Los Angeles, but luckily they are making friends there too.

Gargamel: They are original wood cabinets that I painted. I would never do that again! UGH. Thank you for your response. eedeegan: I had never thought of black hardware! That's a good idea. I love the counters. This particular slab had that large black spot, whereas normally they color is more uniform. I just happened to like that "quirk".

It was a terrible, terrible tragedy. And, regretfully, likely an avoidable one. The success of the attack was due in part to both the boldness of the attack planning and execution by the Japanese military and blithering incompetence on the part of the US military and political leaders. The mistakes and foolish decisions made on the US side that contributed to the carnage and success of the Japanese attack are too numerous to mention. There are plenty of objective, seriously researched books available on the topic for anyone interested in better understanding what happened. Unemployment rates were still high in the late 1930s and early 1940s and the economy had not yet recovered from the downturn of the Great Depression. Many of those serving in the military at the time, and specifically in the Navy and at Pearl Harbor, were volunteers not necessarily motivated by patriotic feelings during peacetime (the US was not at war at the time of the attack) but rather were previously unemployed young men who could get 3 squares a day and a monthly paycheck by joining the military.

Always, I am from Germany. Learned English by watching TV. I don't know, how to do the pronunciation thing in writing.

In German, you just pronounce each letter in this name (she was named after my baby sis). LOL, I know that doesn't help you... but that's all I can say.

She has real problems with it, and uses Rike, and I know, how she tells people to say that.
