This is enough to make me leave Garden Web forever!

I'm getting an ad page (not a pop up) every time I post! It shows up when I preview, when I post and then again when I click to come back to the Kitchen Table. I have to click out of it each time. Is anyone else getting this ridiculous barrage of ads???

Really, if I have to click 3 or 4 times every time I want to post something I will not be doing it and I'll be gone for good.

No trouble here--mine is the same as cjd63. I use Firefox.

Mine is the same at cjd63 also. I am on IE now but I do normally use Firefox.

You're welcome, I'm sorry it's not working for you. It shouldn't make a difference but what browser are you using? I use IE for GW and Firefox for most everything else. Can you make another post and include a link to one of your pictures that you would like to post and I'll give a try and see if I can see what's happening? Greg Southern Nevada

there are butterfly bushes and and some salvia behind the Sun Caladiums. Oh and shooting star bushes they a lavendar/violet color. The rocks I just kept buying at yard sales til i had a whole lot and one day I said to hubs lets move these. They help keep the chickens out of the one bed, well the rocks and a hose every time they stepped foot into it1. I allowed then to go on the other side hoping they would rip up the ruellia by the roots but no such luck. ~tanya

you know ~ i actually have some vocabulary skills in emoticons =P They're easier then you think =) i guess it's like i keep tryin to tell my mom, just look at it sideways XD but i digress as always ~ and i have to admit that when i read the title of this thread i had almost an immediate understanding of what it MUST have been! cause clearly the GW effect Surely means that "well, i have these very simple plants but this thing happened and . .", "i found these really neat lookin s.o.b's but hell if i know what they are . . and how do i grow it anyhow ?!" =[ more importantly (and this is the category that i fall into) "so i had some regular house plants, and got some cuttings from my mom, and stole a cutting from my friend . . . and now i'm stealing cuttings from Everywhere and feel like a herba-clepto-phile (although i do ask permission where/when i can =P ) and i just can't see an end to my desire for Variety in my life!!!" personally . . . i think all are perfectly acceptable approaches to life (and gardening) but the latermost seems to be the GW effect for me, i got a little green bug about me lately and was googling everything from orchids to coconuts (de-husked ie:store bought . .i already have a coconut growing, but was curious) and Never to Fail, was GW. i can't tell you how many googles i put out for menial and semi-advanced things . . . they all wound up here. so i joined =P now your stuck w/ me, and my hunger for variety! =D p.s. we'll talk about pests on some other cloudless day ; )

I have the ads in the column to my right plus a segment called "most recent posts" Something new I guess.

    Hmmm Casey,
I just get the pictures of the cookies etc and the Recent posts on the right side of the page. That's to encourage users to go to the other forums.

I don't have any pop-up ads or any ads anywhere else on the page.
I'm sure you use Ad-Block Plus. I use that, and Chrome, and don't see any ads, ever.

I am getting that stooopid pop-up, too. It is small, in the upper left corner of my screen. Very irritating.

However, I did click on the FAQ of this Opinion Central and scrolled down to the "opt out" button. I clicked on that.

Over to the right hand side of the page are photos of candy and a wreath and brussel sprouts. Those aren't ads, they are links to posts I do believe. I use FF and ad-block plus. The ads are blocked.

I'm getting one that covers the whole page. Terrible

I sure hope someone at GW sees this post and does something about it if they can. It would be awful to lose Casey! I'm getting the same as everyone else. The blocks going down the side which is not at all annoying. In fact, I find it a great idea to introduce people to the other forums. However, I would absolutely hate those pop-ups. I swear I would boycott the products.

It's infuriating! There must be a glitch of something...I get the ad pop up with every action I take! Click on a thread, ad pop up, go back, add pop up, close the ad, it pops back up! And it's the same stupid Mattel ad! Over and over! Literally popping up every 10 seconds!

And to make this even more frustrating, I usually visit this site on my Android phone. Well this new pop-up ad makes that impossible!!! It won't shut off, the ad keeps popping up over and over!

How irritating! No pop-ups here either. Ditto Jasdip and some of the others. I use Chrome and an ad blocker.

As I was reading your post Casey, it happened to me. It is a PITA!!

So far, it hasn't happened over and over yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts. Grrrr!!

I just posted in the "You show me yours..." thread and got no pop-ups or ads. I use Firefox with Adblock Plus and No Script plugins. No Script maintains a "white-list" of sites that are allowed to run javascript, until you manually allow a site it blocks all dynamic content from that site It makes sites considerably less annoying and also makes browsing the internet much safer. However since some sites rely on so many third party javascripts, many for ads, others to make their site work at all, that many times it is more effort to get a site to work enough to be usable that it is worth.

I'd much rather deal with that annoyance than have any ads, anywhere, ever. Especially, noisy, blinking, flashing or moving ads.

No pop-ups here but I don't appreciate the food photos, etc to the right of my screen and although manually moving my screen view to the far right removes them from my view...I am ready to leave every Garden Web forum where GW has chosen to insert their personal advertising into my view. I come here...and to other GW forums...to read and comment when I have something worthy to contribute. Not to be bombarded with tasty visions or other GW personal advertising.

I, like Karen, will be packing up and leaving unless this invasive material is removed. After all these years [far more than my personal page indicates]...I consider this a personal loss and it's a shame I must consider such a move.

I've made the images to the right disappear as well using AdBock plus and a manually added wild-card block pattern. The text is still there, but it is much less noticeable without the images.

I've done the same, Bob...but now find that I have this lovely pea green colored background. Sigh. I noticed this on other GW pages where I succeeded in removing the food photos. Oh well...I find the pea green background far less offensive. At least it's somewhat seasonal. :-) Let's see how long this "fix" lasts.

I'm getting those nasty pop ups on my ipad with every action I do. Then you have to wait over 15 seconds for the ad to go away. Very annoying. If this continues, I will be gone too. I have Safari on the iPad. If I click the close now section for the ad, it just pops up again when I read the message or when I go back. I am completely fed up. It was bad enough to have all the ads on the right hand side but this is rediculous to have this ad as well.

    On Ipad running Safari...

    No pop ups..

I have these pop ups on my iPad running Safari. Pulling my chair away from the table until they stop!

There have always been 'ads' in the right hand column(?) Maybe now just more. Don't even notice them. But a pop-up would not be welcome. I guess its a GW error that will be fixed, so it shows somewhere else. That 'cookie link' was first in the posts, but is now off to the side. Don't forget, there is a GW 'contact us' link at the bottom of every post. Use it!!

    On Ipad running Safari...

    No pop ups..

I have to wonder why Terri has no problems, yet others on iPads using Safari are having problems.

I'm on a PC with Firefox and have no problems.

I don't have the pop-ups using Firefox and Ad block.

But may I suggest that those of you having this problem use the "Contact US' at the bottom of the page and notify GW. I'd really hate to see you guys go.

It is happening to me as well - Win 8, Internet 10 - Firefox. Every single time. Log in - the ad comes up - so I let it run the 15 seconds hoping it would disappear, instead of hitting the link that would take me right to the sight. Didn't matter - the ad ran for the 15 seconds, I signed on - and up came the ad again to run for another 15 seconds. If I open a thread it happens - whether I post or not. Heck, I just go it again when I went to hit preview.

I don't have this pop up, but have in the far right side part way down some ads which don't interfere with the text, then they disappear further down. I HATE popups. I have Chrome and adblock plus. I didn't check my iPad as I don't use it for GW.

Yup, Mattel ads cover the whole page 2-3 times while I'm reading. I've got better, more productive things to do on the net. Guess they need something to pay for their site and if this is the way - then bye-bye!

I don't have any pop up ads with Firefox and Adblock plus with easylist.
The new content on the right side of posts pages is GW content not ads.

If you have pop up and invasive ads use the contact us button at the bottom and report it along with your complaint.

I'm on a PC with Firefox and have no problems.
    I don't have adblocker either.

Have you run a malware scan?

I had to clean up my Mom's computer over thanksgiving, she had some nasty malware that was popping up like crazy. I got the URL and did a google search on it and found it was malware. Did a manual removal of the file and that took care of it.

    Good luck.

On my computer, the ad covering the whole screen and which pops up constantly, identifies itself as coming from iVillage.ca. I sent an email to GW, iVillage.ca and to Mattel letting them know about how intrusive and annoying the ad is, and asking that they remove it. Ironically, the Mattel ad shows in part an unwish list, composed of fruitcake, toothbrush, etc. Well, give me the fruitcake and toothbrush, I say, it is their advertising that is on my unwish list!

I on my iPhone. I keep getting a message ad blocked but that's it. On my lap top the other day I did have a big cookie ad but haven't had it since then. Running IE windows 7 on the laptop. Contact GW.

I am getting the same as casey and have been since yesterday. I get a full page i-village ad between every single forward click. When I click back to the list of threads from this one I will get a full page ad instead and will then have to click "continue to site" to get to the list.

When I click to the another topic the full page ad for i-village will come up and I, again, will have to click "continue to site".

I use firefox with adblock. I don't normally get pop-ups but this is something different. It is an ad inserted between every forward and backward click.

I just got the full page ad when I clicked preview message and had to click continue to site. I will, I am sure, now get it again.

I also get the pop-up ad in the left corner. I am using Chrome.

I've sent a note to GW. We'll see what happens.

Mine is actually a full-page ad telling me that i-village is sponsored by Mattel.

I do get the occasional ad down the side of the page but don't pay any attention to them.

I will now pose my mouse arrow over the right corner of the page when I hit preview message so that I can immediately hit continue to site. Aaaaaannnnnd here we go....

I have been tired of the ads on this site for some time, but then again, I don't pay to be here. I am more sick of the "snide" stuff on here. I don't need all the negative crap.

I see pics and info to the right only when I click on a thread.
    It's kinda interesting actually.
I can scroll it out of my view.
    No odd pop-ups.
    Firefox with ad-block.
Remember..... the site is free. We're going
    to have to expect advertising.
Although a constant huge pop-up sounds
very irritating and over the top..... tell GW you
    don't like it.

    No pop-ups for me (Firefox).

    Win7, Firefox, Adbloc Plus.

I get the pics of cookies, a wreath, and a dish of veggies on the right. After that, blank space in about 1/3 of the page down.

Doesn't bother me much, but what purpose does all that blank space serve?

And BTW, what happened to the EDIT button?

    Sue

    Test.
"What happened to the EDIT button?"

    Whew, it's still there, Sue.

"Edit post" is on your posts.
It's on mine up above... but it only shows for me..

Wow, thought I would relax with some gardenweb for a while -- completely and totally unusable! I even watched the stupid mattel ad with the greedy kids (horrible ad, what a bunch of spoiled brats!) and still it comes up every time. Ipad, iphone, laptop, doesn't matter.

btw, I also have firefox, adblocker plus etc. I think it might be a regional ad; perhaps it's only affecting Canadians?

Will try again next weekend and see if it's gone.... site is unusable meanwhile. :(

    Duh!

    Sue

I've never had them. I also use Firefox and Adblocker. Are you updating them?

I have a question, since I mentioned on the last thread about pop ups that I was not having any problems I am wondering how many of you are active using facebook. Why I ask is because my sister and law is having big time problems with pop ups..started a week ago, and my brother had none on his computer. She has facebook, my brother does not and neither do I. Yesterday she signed into facebook on his computer now he is having problems with popups. Maybe just a coincidence?

This is what I am getting. A full page ad for Mattel. I have to click to get out of it, but it keeps popping up everytime I do something (click on a post, type a comment, preview a comment, post a comment). It is very very annoying! And I see others are having the same issue.

And I tried coming here on my iphone and I can't even click out of the ad because the site obviously isn't optimized for iphones.

    Here is a link that might be useful: {{!gwi}}

I got a reply from GW that just said that they would investigate the problem They think that there might be something wrong with the ad itself.

So is it just us Canadians seeing the Mattel ad?

    Not a Facebooker either...

I'm not having a pop-up problem. Just the ads on the side but they are easily ignored. I'm using Chrome on IPad. (Don't like Safari)

If you have Adblock plus with easylist look at the ad, run your mouse cursor around the edges of the ad watch carefully for a tiny tab to pop up that says block, click on it. That will set up a new block rule for that ad. They are good about updating the Adblock plus block list but new ones do show up that they have not seen yet to add to the list.
Be sure that your Adblock plus is updated too. On Firefox click tools, add ons, look for any ones that say in red they have an update, or at the very top of the add ons page to the right is a gear looking icon click the drop-down menu there and choose update all.

Also open your Adblock plus options and at the very bottom of the filters lists page make sure you don't have checked to allow some ads.

I'm on Safari on iPad and no problems either

No problems with my Kindle. But this same problem has occured in the past....sounds exactly like something many of us suffered through a couple of years ago. It did turn out to be an issue with the ad itself.

Clearly, it's difficult to keep up with all of the glitches that pop up on a big and complex website such as this. The best thing we can do to resolve such an issue is to bring it to the attention of the administrators right away.

Contrary to what some believe, these websites are not monitored on a regular basis......GardenWeb is self-policed. Do not hesitate to report a problem like this, or spamming, bullying, proselytizing, etc. immediately. If 'they ' see something as a real problem, they will do something about it.

However, if the ads that appear on the top or right of the screen offend or annoy you, then a free site might not be for you. I ignore them completely, but appreciate that some just cannot do that.

I sure hope that this problem is resolved for Casey and others soon.

No problems here with IE. I see the ads on the sidebar, but ignore them. As Rhizo says, they are to be found on all free websites, so I've just learned to not "see" them anymore. No pop ups, although I do occasionally get a notice that a pop up has been blocked.

Hope everything gets fixed for you soon!
