Play Time - Find Some Lost Money

Anybody here ever snooped around on the site "Missing Money"? It's easy and fun trying to locate some unclaimed property, usually money. Maybe yourself, an ancestor, a relative, a sibling, or even a friend. I select to look state by state, where I think someone lived, then start the search by last name only. Each state has a different page layout, just find the search box. If there are too many results (sometimes), then I'll add the first name. It will tell you the name, last known contact address, and amount of unclaimed money. If you find something, follow the claim procedure for that state. Note: it's not all "quick & easy" to grab some cash! There are forms to fill out, and you must provide documented proof of who you are, how you are related, and how/why you may be entitled to receive the claim. Lots of waiting, and the process may drag on and on. Give it a try, and have some fun. It's all totally legit, and free. Good luck if you are successful. Yes, I have gotten a claim.

I have done that before. I've found money for other people (my ex, my dad, other relatives), who won't/don't claim it?! I would. Free money. But I never have anything outstanding. Maybe one day, some long lost relative will have willed me some and they couldn't find me? Nah, never gonna happen.

I love "buckstacy". You know when you find a lost bill, like say a $20, in a coat pocket. That's a sniglet. 'member those?

I checked for myself, husband, mother, all my relatives. I found money for myself (medical refund), my husband (another medical refund), my Mom (insurance refund) and my cousin (state tax refund). I remember my cousin got something like $1000, she gave some money to her husband and her sister, then spent the rest of her money on Christmas gifts for her grandchildren. I was so happy to have found it for her! Just took a few minutes on the computer.

I guess I was a quiet little girl, I played cards...had a set of Authors and Old Maid cards...and my great grandmother taught me to play casino. My grandfather made me a spool knitter and I made miles of that stuff and then coiled it for mats. I had a bead loom. And for several yearsI had a washing machine box which got folded up and stored in the garage when it wasn't a house. It had a door with a knob on it and windows with shutters and even a chair inside. The grand kids loved it! And there was always a sandbox....I remember once when my husband was planning on doing some brick work in the backyard and he had about 2 tons of builders sand dumped on the drive way. Like magic that pile gathered kids with little cars and dolls and it was perfectly silent as each one made roads and ran their little cars around!

Yes *some*, do spend more with the card, but I pay my credit card off every month and cash in on the cashback rewards. I profit by my card purchases. I can't imagine someone not taking a 15ÃÂ¢-20ÃÂ¢ per gallon discount if offered but many won't. I find a card discipline to be much, much easier than constantly fumbling with cash. I find that gasoline is pretty much a set purchase so charging it and not taking the cashback is fiscally irresponsible. Spending cash only MIGHT make you double check that you don't exceed that amount on grocery purchases for instance, but will it change your purchasing habits? I don't see it. Food stamps, WIC and EBT *supposedly* helps control that but doesn't from what I've seen. It boils down to the person. And it's also documented how many people who have a dollar in their pocket absolutely MUST spend that dollar, just like some *must* answer the phone if it rings, or *must* open that spam email, even when they know good and well it's to their detriment to open it. When you are so disciplined that you only carry a twenty or certain bills, what do you do when you spend something from it? Replace it with fresh and deposit the remainder back into the bank? Or what? Seems if you don't do that, you won't know exactly what's in there, if you use it. I'm curious how that works. I always carry some cash because there's times the credit card isn't an option but I prefer to keep everything on the card to follow a budget better. Plus it works far better for income tax preparation. I merely looked back in the card records and had forgotten about a substantial amount of deductions that wouldn't have been taken (read: more taxes paid) had I not had the card records. Plus you don't have to fumble with all the receipts and risk lost receipts. I've never understood the "envelope" budgeters. If they're so undisciplined they have to put food money in an envelope, rent/house payment in another, gasoline in another, etc, you know good and well if they run out of McDonalds money, they'll take from another envelope, then when that payment comes due, they'll rob another envelope, then another and another, all the while risking the envelopes getting lost or stolen too. Doesn't make sense to me.

Losing the diamond reminded me of what happened to me. I lost the large diamond out of my engagement ring. I was sick about it. My husband picked out the rings when we got married and it was much more expensive than we could afford...although fairly modest by how much people spend on them today. I knew I'd probably never replace it because I can think of so many things I need worse than a diamond. About two months later, one of my junk friends came by and asked me if I wanted to go to town to check out some thrift shops. I looked in my wallet...a clutch type wallet that I carry every where I go, and in where the bills go...was my diamond. It had fallen out in there and stayed put all that time. Boy, was I happy. I had my rings restored and the diamond put back. A few years later, my husband hired someone to help me around the place while he was away, working. Turned out to be a crack head, and during that time, I broke my wrist and had to take my rings off. I put them in my china cabinet in a candy dish. I had to spend the night at my friend's house because she was out of town. I was thinking...I need to get those rings and bring them here and put them in her safe. Went home and all the doors were open in my house. All the drawers pulled open. The candy jar with my rings, which also had about $5 in change and a couple of ones was empty...rings gone. So sick...you can't imagine. I went to every pawn shop around. I put out word to crackheads to tell their dealers I'd buy the rings back, no questions asked. No results. A year and a half later, I was looking at the china cabinet and saw a covered dish in there. I always put stuff in dishes like that, so decided to look and see what was in there. When I picked up the dish, I saw a baggie behind it. It was the baggie I had my rings in...and the rings were in it. When he came in my house to steal...he couldn't find the light switch. He had opened the fridge for light...left it open too...including the freezer and ruined everything in there. He didn't realize the rings were in the baggie and he just stuffed it in a corner of the cabinet. I had been so upset, I hadn't looked in there for about 18 mo. So once again....I have my rings.

This was so interesting! I didn't find anything with my name or my late husband's name. But in 2009, I inherited an estate, in a very complicated trust format, from my elderly aunt and cousin. I ran their names and found something that was in my uncle's name, who died in 1976. I'm the sole heir, uncle's estate going to my aunt, my aunt's going to my cousin, via trust, me the trustee and sole heir to the remains of the trust when my cousin died - and the trust was dissolved. This $ for my uncle, was a dividend on life insurance, from an old address where they lived that had to be in the 1930's. It would be so complicated to try to claim this and I'm not sure if it would be worth it. If it grew with interested for some period of time it could be worth it, if it's just a couple hundred dollars, I'd spend that on gas getting documents.

I did it a few years ago and got over $700, The hard part was proving where I lived in 1970. But well worth doing.

Glad to hear some of you got lucky. Why NOT trying to claim it is beyond me. It's updated frequently, and just found another. And it would be a monsterous effort trying to scavenge up that proof. Maybe? Those ad links to the right are related to the post, and I see 3 new ones touting you to try and find some monies(??) Never never pay anyone to get unclaimed money. Its all free.

I just found my DH has 49 cents coming to him.
However, the really good news is for my son.
He has over $2600 from the state of California and some money from the state of New York.
I wonder if he will send me a finders fee.

I'm with you OldFixer, anything above $20 and I'm in.

Why don't they? Well, I think it's because it's only double digits. And one, I think daddy's, it's tied to his mom's estate which is already settled. It's only triple digits. It'd probably take the full four and above like Carol's son.

Interesting results. 51ÃÂ¢!! Just missed by 4 days a state auctioning off safe deposit boxes. Don't know if you see the owner name prior, to do some research? Other states put stuff on ebay. Double digits don't sound inferior to me, when its free.

DH found our younger son's name on a state list. The next time he came home, he took us out to dinner with his brother and his wife to the tune of well over $800. Spent it all on us. Other son brought an expensive bottle of wine to share that architect Frank Gheary gave him as a thank you for a film clip he edited for him. The somelier was quite impressed with Mr. Gheary's selection. We were glad we found it!

Thanks for the reminder, I have about $500 to claim that I haven't gotten around to, but it seems easy enough.

My deceased mother has a few hundred, but it looks like a royal pain to claim it as an heir so I don't know if I will.
