Holiday tomarrow? Do your kids have it off?????

Opening day of deer season. Schools closed and with the holiday Monday, gives them a 4 day holiday!!!

But major storm on the way in which the hunters like.

Oh well, since we are not hunters will enjoy the inside, warm house

Not a holiday as far as I know, but the gkids are off for conferences. Stay warm and safe!

Monday is Veterans Day, kids off here.

Never heard of such as deer season holiday.

My son is an avid hunter.

Small town life sounds good to me. As does living in the country. We had a few acres when I had horses and other animals back in the 60s and 70's. Phoenix is soooo big, too much traffic, and I hate driving even if it didn't cause my leg to go on the warpath. I was born in a small town, in Ala. I don't really going places alone either, and won't go out at night except to family gatherings at one of my kids. I'm waiting the arrival of my toile plates I just bought. Tho heaven knows what I can find to do with them, but will try just because of all the support I've gotten here. Any table settings I do will be just for ONE, maybe two if you're lucky. LOL. I'm going to be a one-trick pony, sorry about that. I just can't do full tables for many reasons. I've been 'planning' my Christmas decor. Really planning this year. Thought it might take some of the load off me being so over-whelmed with it when I go to unpacking a zillion things in the middle of the floor while telling two cats NOT to help me. A zillion times! One sleepless night I started plotting different places to put things this year. I want my newly begun collection of Nutcrackers (started last year) pretty much together. But I think the purple one should go with the Santa. And I have two golf Santas and two golf Nutcrackers that should stay together. Last year they were with my two other special Nutcrackers, a policeman and a fireman. These have a lot of meaning! I'm going to put my Village in the antique china cabinet in my entry hall this time I think, instead of Painted Pony Cabinet in familyroom. Tho I still have to move over a 100 statues from BOTH. I was thinking of putting Xmas horses and reindeer in the pony cabinet. I have quite a few of both now. Anyway, its fun to mentally decorate. It also doesn't wear me out or hurt my body. LOL. I think I'll start my Village next week in fact. First I have to make room for all those dog statues to safely go on closet shelves for the next two months! Ugh. hugs, Karen

When I was a kid it was so easy. Mom and dad were still married and came from the same hometown. So a visit to the grandparents meant a trip to only one place. We would stay a few days with one side, and a few days with the other. It was great. When my parents got divorced it got more complicated. My brother and I had four Christmases one year: I drove home from college in Missouri to Florida for Christmas with Mom/granny; flew to Maryland for Dad/stepmom/stepbrothers; drove to PA for cousins; then on to Ohio for Dad's dad, then drove back to Maryland, flew back to Fla. and drove back to Mo. It was exhausting. Now I am married to DH, whose parents are also divorced. The four parents live in: California, Arkansas, Alabama and Florida. Oh, and his mom and dad can't be together. And my mom and stepmom can't be together. Then there are DH's kids and their own in-laws . . . it's like that riddle with the farmer trying to cross the river with a fox, a chicken and a sack of grain. Our Christmas solution? DH sees his dad about twice a year when he comes from CA to Ark. to visit his brothers and have a fishing trip. We used to go to DH's sister's (his mom lives on the sister's property) for Thanksgiving, but there was a huge family meltdown back in '04 that put a stop to all that. So now DH sees his mom on those same spring and fall trips to Ark. and we go out (with my mom) for Thanksgiving. My mom always gets the actual holidays, because she is single and, frankly, the most pitiful (I know, I know -- but it's true) and lives here in town. Dad and stepmom fit in where they can, usually coming up before or after Christmas. DH's boys are usually with their Mom on Christmas. We have DH's daughter and family over usually the week before or after Christmas, or meet them halfway for dinner -- and invite the boys to this. My brother comes in from Tx. some time around Christmas, but also goes to his girlfriends' folks in Ky. Whew! I'm tired already! There is no way the kitchen will be done in time for Christmas this year, so there will be a lot of eating out. There will also be liberal use made of hotels for visiting relatives, as my mother informs me that the cute little pull-out sofa-chairs I got from IKEA for the spare-bedroom-turned-home-office are not beds at all, and should be donated to the CIA for interrogation purposes.

I have 3 boys ages 3, 6, 9 years. I purchased the small round ziplock bowls and labeled them with all 3 kids names. Inside each one, I put 20 white poker chips labeled with their initial. I also have a fine jar. Each one of those white poker chips represent a quarter. At the end of the week, the white poker chips are exchanged with money (It can be a total of $5.00). I don't pay my kids for chores, but I do fine them for things. If I ask them to do something and they don't do it or have to be told again, they are fined a quarter (white poker chip). If they smart off to me, tell me no, misbehave, etc. they can be fined also. On Saturday, when I exchange the poker chips for real quarters, they must put 10% in a jar for tithes, 10% in a jar for savings and the rest goes into a jar for cash. I also exchange the fined poker chips for quarters that go into a jar labeled "dinner for Mom & Dad" when we have enough money in the jar, Dad & I go out to eat on the kids! I also put 7 blue poker chips for 30 mins of Playstation time, 7 red poker chips for 30 mins of computer time and 7 other colored chips for 30 mins of TV time. They must put these chips in the fine jar when they want to use the TV, Playstation & Computer. I also fine these chips too. (these are replinished every Sunday) I try to make sure they always have some money by Saturday so I will fine the other chips if necessary. The TV time chip isn't the only time they can watch TV. If the family is watching TV or the other child is watching something, they don't have to use a chip. Just if there's something specific they want to watch or if it's a time when the TV is not being watched anyway by someone else. I also have a jar that is filled with strips of folded paper that lists special privilages that they can pick out of if they receive all $5.00 that week or if they've been extra helpful or extra good. Some examples: stay up an extra 15 mins., sleep in Mom's bed when Dad is working, choose and help fix dinner one night, choose and help fix a dessert, etc. I also have a jar of punishments in case I'm flustered and need a quick punishment. Some examples are: no screens for 24 hours (playstation, computer, TV), time out in room for 30 mins, must go to bed 30 mins early, etc. There's also a mercy ticket in that jar (because God gives us mercy when we don't deserve it). I have one last jar that has slips of paper with extra jobs to do. This is used as a punishment also (smart mouth, etc) some examples are: dog poop patrol, wipe baseboards throughout house, vacuum entire house, sweep front and back porch, clean glass doors inside and out, etc. Most of the jars I use are the empty sweetened Kool-aid plastic jars. This system works great for us! You'd be amazed at how my 3 year old gets upset at having to give me a poker chip! DS also loved his Coupe! It was the best $40 ever spent! If you look around you can also find them at yard sales. MIL bought the older version (the purple one, we have the green one with the sparkles in the paint LOL) for like $1 last year. She also has the older one with the red body and yellow roof. When DS was pretty young and before the biting everything stage, he played with this frog at MIL's house. It was made of rubber and had sand in it. I guess it was for the garden or something but it was like one of those stress balls. DS would throw it and squeeze it for hours. MIL put it away when he got into biting and she put it up. She just got it down last week and he's afraid of it now! LOL We also got a lot of time in with the Fisher Price farm and his tricycle (even when he couldn't reach the peddles) and his tent. Oh, also pots and pans and lids. And MIL would fill the sink with water and soap and make bubbles. Then scoop the bubbles up into a butter bowl and Shane would play for a long time. ~Leslie~

Not for us. The kids celebrate Veteran's Day at school, but don't get time off for it.

Thanks for the reminder sbout Monday. Since Veterans Day is on Sunday Nov 11, the banks and Post Office should be closed on Monday

Nope - no days off for hunting or Veterans Day.

I do know a few kids who are taking the WEEK off from school to trap. That would never ever happen at this house!

Our first day of deer season is later in the month. I always dread it. But I'm sure the kids don't, because the schools close.

Not around here. And if they had been closed for hunting season, you can bet my daughter would NOT have had a 'free' day--Mom would have seen to it that she spent the day doing something worthwhile and educational (possibly at a wildlife shelter), so she realized that shooting animals is NOT something to be celebrated. Luckily, in our area, hunting is not widely practiced.

I'm not anti hunting, at all. I am rather taken aback that the schools are closed for such a reason. The thought of hundreds or thousands of armed children being set loose in the woods......yikes!

They had Monday off for some teacher conference, workday thing...and Tuesday for election day. I thought Sunday was Veterans' Day?

Nope. We were off for parent/teacher conferences this past Tuesday, election day. I thought that was a smart move. Usually they'll be in school one day, out one, then back in... First time I can think of they actually used a day for two things at one time.

Where I used to live was the Tennessee Walking horse celebration and the kids got out of school that week. It's just about the only time of year that county makes money. Everyone rents out their houses (on our street, across from the horse grounds), for thousands and the kids work the shows. Whatever works! I did find it odd, but I understood why they did it. We moved before our son started school so I never had to subject him to that week.

Kath, Veterans Day is officially Nov. 11 of every year. If that day falls on a Sunday, it is observed on Monday.

I remember teaching high school in a semi rural area. The first day of hunting season, the boys were not there. Nowadays where we live, for every day a student is absent, the school district loses under $50 a day in state funding. That wouldn't be a concern for the students, but it is a significant drop in funding for the schools. So you can see why a school district would change its calendar in order to avoid such a large loss of funding.

Every day is deer season around here (a suburban Pa township of 20,000 people).

We are overrun with deer in our yards, and streets - and it's illegal to kill them (except in the dark, when they run in front of a car, and a lot of body damage).

It's a rare day that I don't see a dead deer by the road.

But, the schools are open.
