Ravencajun-another ereader question

Ravencajun, With Kindle and Amazon we can archive our books and, I assume, if I get a new Kindle I can still access my books, correct? What about books from other sites and with kindle or another ereader? That is, if your ereader dies, do you lose the books you have? This question is a result of a conversation with Rosefolly under Kindle Fire at Reader's Paradise , which I can only get on every once in awhile. Thanks for any help you can give us.

I'm not Revencajun, but I can answer as far as Kindles are concerned with ebooks from Amazon.

I have two Kindles registered to my Amazon account; and I also have the Kindle application on my desktop pc, my laptop, and my tablet pc. Any time you get a new Kindle, or download the Kindle application to a device, you will always have the option to access your "Archived Items." Those are all of the Kindle books that you've previously purchased through Amazon. You can choose which ones you want to download to the new device. You can also "manage your Kindle" through your account on Amazon.com, and see a complete listing of all of the books you've purchased (even if the "purchase" was at zero cost), and you can have it downloaded to any device that is registered to your account.

As for other sites from which you get books for you Kindle, you'd most likely be able to find out your answer by looking for the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), or by sending an e-mail via a "Contact Us" link on the site.

I do know that when I've gotten books that weren't in the Kindle format, I've converted them using the free Calibre application; and I've always downloaded the books to my pc, then converted them. So, they're still on my pc and I can easily transfer them to my second Kindle (or laptop or tablet) via the USB cable that comes with all Kindles.

Same is pretty much the case for like the Nook and Barnes and Noble it keeps the list of books you get from there in your library so you can access them from your online account and reload them to a new device.

For the other devices and other sites that you may find free books or purchase books what I do is save them to my pc and then put them on an SD card and use that SD card in my reader so I always have a copy on my pc and on the SD card.

I try to get all my ebooks in epub format so I can use them on all of my various readers. I use kindle for pc on my netbook and those books are in the kindle specific format.
I have converted other formats also using calibre and other online converters which do a pretty good job.

Also the library books that you can get for ereaders are in epub format.

Yes, that's what I've always done in the past, and it always worked before. However, this one time I kept getting the reject notice and could not figure out what to do. Since I was trying to reply to a question, I went ahead and opened a new post to provide the reply. Ironically, I've been able to do this successfully since. I think this may be a situation where I probably do not fully understand what it is I'm doing since I'm not too computer-savvy, and I'm more lucky than unlucky. Thanks for your advice, genes. I've learned a lot from this forum!

wait you don't have to take those off just turn them off while you try to get AVG to install and work. They are all fine good programs and should be on the pc. I would bet some of Norton may still be hanging in there causing the problem, so definitely use their removal tool for the version of Norton that she had that should clear up most of it. then go to right click start then explore in the tree> program files see if there is still a folder for Norton if so delete the entire Norton folder, anything you see labeled Norton or Symantec should go. You did not do anything wrong sometimes things just have conflicts and especially with Norton. So do the removal of that then just turn off those programs and try AVG again. The reason I suggest using the method in the AVG faq is that it keeps it from installing some of the extras that have caused problems on some pcs. It is a much slimmer version. You are doing a good deed! You are helping someone ,that is always a good thing. As I said it may require doing an add remove on AVG then reinstalling it, that is why it should be disconnected from the internet since you will be with out protection while AVG is not working. If AVG continues to fail you could try AVAST free, I use it on one of my pcs. avast! 4 Home Edition - FREE antivirus the install and user guide are on that same page off to the left. I do not use Vista so if anyone is aware of any conflict issue that I don't know about hopefully they will let us know.

Sorry I got here late and I have been scouring the web trying to find out which version of Android it has on it and if it is upgradable. I have finally found it has Android 1.6 and from what I read it is not upgradable, which is a real shame. It will not do much with the 1.6 Android system. It can still be used for many things including reading books. and looking at pictures and listening to music it has quite a bit on it as it comes. You can use a usb or ethernet to it by way of a little adapter it comes with, it takes a mini sd card so you can store your books pics and tunes on there. It has a pretty low resolution so it will not be super sharp. For the price you really can't lose much if you just wanted a basic device for reading and stuff. It does have wifi and you will be able to surf and all of that including email. Where you will have problems is that many many of the apps will not work on that early version, but some do. These are older tablets from probably 2010 that is why they are putting them out there so cheap these days. It is made by pandigital the same company that made the pandigital novel that I have. here is a link to the pdf manual for it you can read more of what it can do. Manual one thing this one has the resistive type touch screen so will be a harder touch for it, you use the tip of the finger or fingernail or us the stylus. the over all reviews I have been reading are not real favorable. In todays market I am recommending Android 2.3 and higher and the higher the better Android 4.0 may be out now I know it was close to ready. So just depends on what you would want to use it for like I said.

yes I think the new Microsoft Surface tablets can or any that are running windows. They will be pretty expensive since they are newer versions. Android tablets and Ipads will not. However there are apps that are office apps that are very good but if she wants just those specifically she will have to go with a microsoft based tablet. Tell her to look at the Surface tablet first and go from there. Surface Pro My Asus transformer Tf300 has Polaris office on it which is a very good office suite if she can look at the specs on that and thinks it would work for her then she will find several Android tablets that can have that app installed. Work On Microsoft Office Documents On The Go With Polaris Office For iOS [Sponsored Post] Polaris Office IF she thinks Polaris will work for her then pretty much any good quality Android tablet would be a candidate including the ASUS transformer like I have it is a great choice since you can get the additional dock which is a real laptop type keyboard which snaps right onto the tablet making it both a laptop and tablet. ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T I got mine complete tablet and dock for under $300 so there are deals out there.

I live in Sacramento County, California. Our County libraries have ebooks in Kindle format. When searching for books on the library websites, you can specify Kindle format. You can choose to view all ebooks that are in Kindle format, or you can choose to view ebooks in Kindle format that are currently available (no waiting list).
