Did he give you any antibiotics? or rinse with warm salt water? Glad you are better. I have a crown replacement soon.

thanks. Actually I have 2 days worth of penicillan left and I am supposed to rinse with salt water tomorrow. Just hope I can avoid the dry pocket thing and it heals nicely.

Hope you feel better. I've had wisdom teeth pulled, quick by an oral surgeon. Took the painkiller afterwards, had a good nights sleep, and I was fine the next day except for a little swelling. Know what you mean about swallowing some blood-mine oozed a little afterwards, holding gauze in my mouth helped.

Welcome to the club. I had one extracted on Wednesday.

I didn't mind the numbing, I didn't feel the needles, even the extraction wasn't too bad. What about drove me batty was, I inadvertantly chose a place that caters to children. And they had cartoons playing in the waiting room. I ***hate*** cartoons--the clinky noises, the squeaky voices, the obnoxious antics, all of it!!!

I brought my puzzle book, so I was able to tune out most of it until they took me to the exam room. Left book with husband. Sat there 45 minutes with nothing but those hideous cartoon noises bleeding over from the waiting room. I thought I would lose my mind.

Then, when they took me to the room where they did the extraction, they turned on monitor on in the ceiling--and there were those awful cartoons RIGHT OVER MY HEAD!!!!!

I probably sounded like a crabby old grouch when I said, "could you turn those OFF?"

My dentist, a nice guy, very kindly did so. There was a baby screaming across the hall. Ahhh...music to my ears.

Hope you're feeling A-OK. It took a full day for my system to throw off the effects of the numbing and the stress, so don't be surprised if you feel a little hung-over.

I've had 2 pulled in the last year, and I had to BEG him to pull instead of root canal/crown. I didn't want to spend the $$$ on that or have to sit through it, plus I don't know anyone that hasn't had trouble w/ root canals. My dentist broke some of the roots off and had to surgically remove them, and of course, as bad as that sounds, I didn't feel a thing. One I had stitches with.

I'm sure they told you, when you use that salt rinse DO NOT spit it out, just let it fall out of your mouth. No straws. Do everything to prevent a dry socket--believe me, you don't want that. I had one once years ago w/ a wisdom tooth.

So far so good. I am not supposed to do anything for 24 hours (brush, rinse) but they did say not to spit or use a straw.

Only real pain I've felt is from the needle used for the novacaine but it's doing better today.

Glad to hear I am not the only one who has had this.

What exactly does a dry scoket feel like? How will I know if i have one and what do i do about it if I get one?

I had a root canal/crown that abcessed. OMG I was in pain for about 5 days before I could get it pulled.

Sorry, I know it bites.

There will be no doubt in your mind if you develop a dry socket. They told me they usually appear on the second to fifth day, so be very careful. They hurt like he-- and you have to go to the dentist every day for several days to have it "packed." Both my DDs had them w/ wisdom tooth extration. When I had mine, I called the dentist and told them what was going on. I told them maybe I'd just wait and see if it was better "tomorrow." They probably laughed. They said, "oh, it won't get better on it's on." Nope!! mind their instructions to the letter.

I guess I missed that this was a wisdom tooth. I was wondering why they didn't do a root canal and save the tooth!

I have three wisdom teeth; the fourth never errupted. Dentists HATE to work on these teeth because they are so far back in the mouth.

I just had a wisdom tooth pulled and suffered from dry socket over Labor Day weekend. Since you asked, samkaren, the pain from dry socket starts very slowly, so that, at first, you think you imagined it. To me, it's a very high-pitched piercing type of pain rather than a throbbing pain. When I went back to the dentist, he placed something in the space and within 15 minutes the pain was gone, never to return. The healing was uneventful after that.

Samkaren - Good luck with your recovery! Follow your doc's instructions to the letter - no straws, etc., nothing that would cause a sucking motion to pull the plug from the hole. I had my two lower wisdom teeth pulled a few years ago and did develop a dry socket in one of them. It was not fun but it also wasn't horrible. Had to return to the doc's twice for re-packing. He also gave me a clove cream to use topically and a scrip for pain killers, which I certainly used. Took about a week to get completely better.

Day 3 and so far so good. Haven't had any significant pain or anything. I've been rinsing with the salt water and being very careful eating. I'm only chewing on the other side of my mouth and taking smaller bites.

Beleive you me.... you will know if you get dry socket. Painful. Sounds like you are doing all the right things.
