Should we abolish speech writers?

My topic involves politicians, but my complaint is bipartisan: Many, if not most, of the best speeches given by high-ranking politicians were written by someone else.

Ted Sorensen died recently. He penned John F. Kennedy's memorable speeches, providing President Kennedy with quotes that are still cited today. Ronald Reagan, the "Great Communicator," communicated via Peggy Noonan's speeches. Sarah Palin's heavily applauded acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention (2008) was written by Matthew Scully.

I for one think this is wrong. We judge politicians largely on the basis of their speeches. We shouldn't have to wonder if a brilliant thought or heartfelt turn of phrase is the speaker's own, or a good delivery of someone else's. I would guess that most of us don't wonder at all; we just get caught up in the moment, and give credit where it isn't really due.

What are your feelings on this?
