A nice thing happened to me today.

I was paying for a purchase in a store today. The store wasn't busy at all and the clerk ringing up my purchase was quite young. Under 20, I would guess. I mentioned something about my husband and she asked how many years have we have been married. I answered 54 yrs and she she then asked how we met. I told her the story although it was kind of long. She listened very closely and then asked how old DH & I were when we got married.It just seemed so nice to have this young woman interested in an old lady. I have found as I have gotten older, I feel kind of invisible when I'm out and about.

I'm pretty sure I smiled all the way home. Dottie

There are lots of kind people, if you allow them to be. I have been fortunate enough to be on the receiving end when times were tough. Also, a couple of years ago, I was buying Xmas cellophane for cookie plates, and forgot that they only took cash. I have enough for 2 but not for 3 - the man behind me said, hey, it's xmas, and gave me a twoonie. Now, on the other side: several years ago, in my old home, I brought in the large bottles of water, not the 18 litres, but the 11 litres - sorry, I'm too tired to to the math. Anyway, Sunday afternoon, summer, I'm in the garden, but need to do the water run to be ready for the work week. I took one of these small containers, worth $10, to the local grocery, where I had purchased it. You have to get the deposit back first, then get the replacement. I had some nit of a week-end semi-manager tell me that they did not carry that size. I said, but I bought it here, and he insisted not - pretty much called me a liar. In my gardening clothes, I was not too impressive - on Monday, in my power suit, I had a chat with the owner. Now, nothing could take away from the embarrassment I felt, but the impertinent little nit will not be bothering any one in that store again. Priceless.

My husband gave me a beautiful string of pearls with a saphire clasp for christmas last year...guess I'm old lady :) But then my newest piece of jewelry is probably 1950 with most of it being 1880's...so perhaps I"m just an old lady at heart :) I love jewelry with history. Sell it and enjoy the vacation...and know that the person who buys it is probably someone like me who will cherish it as much as the original family member of yours did. As to purging...well frankly, I like stuff :oP I love all the stuff ya'll donate to charity because I haunt the goodwill and habitat store looking for it. I use it daily and it makes me feel good. But that said...I rather enjoy purging too, but perhaps that's linked to the fact that I bought a huge house full of someone elses "stuff". I happily donate items to habitat. I like the tax deduction, and I love the feeling of doing something positive for a charity I support. I also do put things outside with a "free" sign (because I think it's cute how people will take ANYTHING!...no one does that in Alaska) but most of those are children's things (which must be taken during school hours so DS does not see it LOL). That reminds me...I have a slide for free to put out tomorrow when he's napping LOL My one hoarded...hang on, I don't know, thing is my son's cloths and cloths I purchased for a set of twins we lost. I thought we were going to adopt or have another child and now that we've give up on that I have to open the boxes. I have literally dozens of large boxes full of lovely cloths, regular stuff, and brand new things for the babies we expected. I know I have to get to that stuff...it takes up a huge amount of space, both physically and emotionally, but I haven't quite gotten into the zone to be able to do that one. Maybe we should make a pledge...those of us who have some purging to do...I'm peronally going to get through those cloths and give them to someone who needs them within the first quarter of 2011. Jak...maybe you should empty the barn by then LOL Ok that's probably asking too much heh heh

I was in Smart&Final (name really fits this story) the other day. The lady in front of me was buying a large quantity of cased soda. She had one each of 4 kinds and 6-8 cokes. She put the 4 different kinds and one of the coke ones on the conveyer belt. The checker insisted she had to ring each of the cokes separately. Another checker opened a new line. Since I was next I went over to him where a man from the end of our line tried to cut me off. Then the same man proceeded to invade my space with his cart. I finally had enough an hip checked the cart back into him. HARD. I did this without looking. Heard a loud OW. Again without looking back I said "whoops didn't see ya". Checker grinned. My item rang up higher than it should have. I figured there would be another snag but checker simply asked me the price and punched it in. As I left the lady with soda was still being rung up by the dumb checker she got. My smart checker would probably make rude guy behind me jump through hoops. LOL

Such a nice happening. Another thing I find hard to handle is people addressing me as "dearie". I would just love to find an appropriate answer/comeback.

Dottie, my sister and I were just talking about this very thing...becoming invisible after a "certain" age.
We meet in Vegas every year for a couple of days and were remarking about how in "the day" heads would turn, not anymore LOL!
A couple of years ago while visiting New York it seemed that most of the younger clerks/waitpersons would address me as Miss...Boy did I enjoy that. I wondered if they were trained that way or if it was more of an east coast thing? I don't know why the word Ma'am can sound almost insulting if it's not said in a kind tone.

Here,when my Mom and I go out together in the malls and the stores the younger clerks call as , how are you guys today, my Mom says us Ladies are fine thankyou, I don't like being called a guy, even the young men call us guys, she said how would you like if I called you a lady, think about it, she gets upset about it , shes 85 and just doesn't like to be called a guy, I just put up with it, what can you do.

Hey gamg, thanks for the nice responses. She was really a sweet gal. Deborah ps, that is the word I couldn't come up with. I felt validated. When you get to a certain age, that just doesn't happen much. As for 'turning heads', I know I turned a few heads in my time, but alas, the glamor days are over. Dottie

What a nice young lady..Her parents can be very proud of her.....
It bothers me to get the "guys" and also to be called "hon", usually by someone that is young enough to be one of my grandkids.....
About turning heads, that's why I love to go out with my grand daughters...Heads really turn and I always say,
"must be me" and we have a good laugh....

That was nice. The "listening" part is so important. It's good that you shared your story because all of us will be more aware the next time we are out. I talk a lot to my boys about "paying it forward" about how if I do something nice that person will (hopefully) feel good and do something nice...etc.

Lacombe-thanks for saying that. Saying "guys" is something I do all the time. It has become such a generic term that I don't even think about it literally meaning "male". I'll be more careful now.

When I was working on the ambulance, I used to get so irritated at the younger/newer medics calling our patients, hon or sweetie. Once I asked my partner if he was on a date. I know not the most professional question, but my belief is you refer to your patients as Mrs or Mr unless you have their permission to do otherwise. They are NOT your sweetie. It aggravates me.

Once, when I was younger, I was in a department store and walked up on a group of older ladies out shopping together. The were laughing and enjoying their day. As I walked past I said "Oooh you three look like trouble". They laughed and laughed. Think that lifted my day more than theirs. It still makes me smile.
