Anyone going to the midnight showing of the new Harry Potter film next Thursday? I'd love to do that some time. Tickets are on sale now at my local theater, but there is not a single person I know that would be interested in going.

I usually wait until a couple days after the release, and by that time the theater is nearly empty. Would be fun to go when it is full of die-hard fans. :)

My kids have to be at school on Friday so won't be at midnight showing. We do plan to see it in the first few days after it comes out.

Hah, you just finished it, Karen? Moi, I finished it in 3 days after its release. lol. It's satisfying. The same feelings I have after watching "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". :-D I like the first one best. though. I ordered this last one before release. Just for my exchange student. I read it first before mailing it to my kid. Sneaky. :-)

Do you like audio books?

I live with my audio books and little CD player at my side! My days are filled with blocks of "mindless chores" time and that's when the books really shine. At first I did have to "train my brain" to let the audio book be the foreground and the focus, and the folding laundry/food prep/cleaning/dusting/putting away tasks became the background 'noise.' Once I made that change in my "mental wiring" I totally enjoy the books. One day I folded and put away three loads of laundry, changed the bed linens, and damp mopped three floors...without realizing it. I had been so focused on the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) book I was "reading" I hadn't noticed my "must do" list had shrunk. Just this past weekend I bought unabridged copies of The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo; The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. I can't wait to start listening to them. Getting the fall cleaning and season switching done will be a breeze this year! Right now I'm lisening to Spencer Quinn's third "Chet and Bernie" book To Fetch a Thief.

We are having a heat wave. it's about 2pm and its 90 degrees in the shade. I have to remind myself that I am lucky I have AC and can run it at will. I'll be 75yo this week and I bought myself an electric guitar, the thing is, I don't know anything about music, let alone a guitar. But it is so good for my brain to learn something new, that I'll keep practicing. There are some super videos for beginner players on the net. DD and GS are coming on Saturday to help me celebrate my B-day. There is a method to my madness. When I'm done with the guitar, I'll give it to my GS. His dad is a great guitar player, so GS will have a good teacher. I have just about finished two guest rooms. I shopped mostly from our house, nothing fancy, but I hope our guests will be comfortable. DH has a very old car, the benefit is that it has very few computer features, so he can fix just about anything else. The other benefit is that the older the car, the less we pay in registration fees. We've saved a lot of money over the years. My favorite necklace broke, and I'm looking to make one with the beads I bought at an estate sale for $4.00, I have to go and buy some spacer beads, but I have everything else I'm looking for some cooler weather, LOL, rob, you asked.

Does anyone here paint?

For getting into art school, I would do something different. Just imagine how many amateur paintings of bowls of fruit they have to look at! Better to do something that has some meaning. An old master still life bowl of fruit is interesting because of the artist's use of light and shadow, texture, line, color, etc., to not just represent groceries, but to evoke a feeling, a mood, a thought. That is the essence of art. Your cell phone can do a better job of depicting lifelike groceries. It's what you feel about the subject, the passion you put into the art, that's important. if your daughter isn't inspired by fruit, and fruit isn't in the instructions, I'd skip it. Follow the instructions to prove that she's capable of following instructions, but otherwise, let her choose a subject that she has a passion for. Is she into recycling? She can make a still life of bottles, wrappers and containers. Instead of choosing them randomly, they should also have a meaning, like what she was putting out for the trash truck, or bits that she found as litter on her way home from school, or things put in the regular trash at a fast food place that could be recycled (especially if she finds out that they don't separate their garbage after it's removed from the dining room). Is she into dogs? Maybe her still life is composed of all of the paraphernalia that belongs to the dog -- everything but the dog. Maybe a dog bed for a focal point, waiting for the dog to return. Does she have a drawing table? Maybe arrange it attractively and make her drawing supplies the subject. Once she has a subject, lighting is important. When she starts, she should take some pictures of what it looks like at that instant, and also make a palette guide with colors that will be used in the painting. For instance, if there's a red pencil (or pear), note the color in neutral light, the color where the sun hits it, and the color where it's occluded by shadow. There are plenty of in between shades, as well, but really seeing the differences that light and dark make to the same color is key to painting. As much as possible, she should try to paint at the same time every day so that there's some consistency in the color. Think Monet. As to the rest, passion is everything. Before starting work, taking a few moments to get into the feeling and the meaning of what's being created is very useful. It helps to create a trigger. A song to represent the project, for instance, that she can play every time she starts working on it. That makes it easier to jump back into it and pick up the feelings. Smells work really well for this kind of thing (better than sound even) but art supplies all smell, so sound works better in this instance. Best of luck to her.

DD and I will probably wait a bit. She works a 9-5 job, and I'll still be recouperating from lithotripsy (won't enjoy the movie, if I have to keep getting up to run to the restroom--LOL)

That sure sounds like fun. I've enjoyed the midnight bookstore parties for the latest book release.

Maybe I'll consider it, and drink extra coffee Friday morning to function at work.

So do it! You don't need a companion!

I did one midnight showing a few years ago - but I was the "responsible adult" for 4 teens. Did I enjoy the movie - well, it wasn't terrible. The kids LOVED IT! I was gracious enough to sit way in the back, LOL.

But my point is - the energy from the fans is absolutely wonderful! So if it's a movie you're going to see anyway, indulge yourself and go to the midnight showing. You'll love it.

My daughters want to too, but I am too die hard mom about such things. School Friday means bed by 10:00 Thursday. We did go at midnight and get one of the books. We stayed up reading for a few hours but it was summer and school was not a factor.

My son, Alex, already has his ticket, without us. He's going with his K-group at UK. They are a group that is mostly new college students and one older one who shows them around and helps them get around.

The rest of us want to go but the girls have school the next day so we will probably go to the first showing after school on Friday. If we can get a ticket. Last time we went on the opening day it was a nightmare... and no tickets left.

I'm sure my 13 yo daughter will try to convince me but she also has school the next day. We will definitely see it a day or two after it comes out. (and I'm sure she will go see it a couple more times during the run) She's been talking about this for months *eyeroll*
When the last book came out I took her to the midnight release at the mall, (she was ten at the time) she dressed up, there were lots of costumes....I won some 'cool' mom points that night ;o)

We did the midnight showing when Twilight came out, was fun, I may have been the oldest person in the theatre!

lisa - I'm tellin'! Booooooo! : ) By "preview" do you mean you just get that - previews - or will you be watching the entire movie?

I'll probably just wait until the following Saturday, IF I can.

I don't go anywhere at midnight anymore, but I can't wait to see this, and I'll probably go to the earliest show on a weekend day.

If DH didn't have to work in the morning we'd TOTALLY do that!!!
The boys are out of school. We can't go without DH so hopefully we'll see it Sunday when he gets home.

I just wonder how much they're going to leave out of the movie or how much they changed things. After the second one, the movies veered so far from the books it makes you wonder how things are going to be resolved.

Schoolhouse, I know what you mean. I hear all the time from my son, who grew up reading the books every detail that is different. I've been relistening to the books on cd in the car on my way to and from work, was hoping to be done with the last book before the movie came out. Didn't quite work out that way...and maybe that's a good thing.

I guess advanced showing would be the proper lingo. Its the whole movie for a VIP audience. Personally I am not a huge HP fan, but the kids are very excited!!!

Plus it's too bad we lost Richard Harris as DD. Michael Gambon wasn't the best choice in my opinion.

Who's all going tonight? Did you already leave for the theater. I heard they were telling people to be at the local theater around 9:30pm. Have a great time whoever is headed out. Guess I'll go on Saturday.

lisa fla - I'm so tempted to ask, but don't want to know too much. Just say "Yay" or "Nay" on the movie?

I'm off to the shower in 10 minutes to get ready for the midnight showing in East Grand Forks.

I already have my ticket!

Driving home from the base clinic and commissary this afternoon, I was told one of the headlights was out.

So...instead of having a nap before HP, I called the late night auto repair place. They have my headlight in stock, and can swap it out and change the oil and have me out of there by 10:30 p.m.

I'm meeting a friend at the theatre at 11 p.m., but I'd be going even if she couldn't have come.

Yes; I'll (for the 7th time) be disappointed that the movie will not come close to the wonderful feeling of the books, but I'll enjoy it all the same.

I love to see all the teens dressed up and really enjoying the moment. The check-out kids at the commissary were all excited and discussing their outfits they were putting together.
