Just bought myself 2 new recipe books!

I love baking bread! Lately it has become an obsession and we can't eat all the bread I want to make! It is just the 2 of us now and since I'm fat I don't need to eat all the bread, rolls and such I love to make! Anyway, the two new books are bread recipe books!!

1) Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a day

2) The Bread Makers Apprentice by Peter Rhinehart

I just ordered them on Amazon.com and now I just can't wait to get them. My daughter gave me a gift card to Amazon which she knew I would spend on books. LOL

Do you have a favorite bread book you like to use?

Is anyone else a bread baker? What is your favorite recipe so far?

I found "The Complete BOok Of Bread & Bread Machines" by Chistine Ingram and Jennie Shapter at Borders on their bargain table not too long ago...I really like it, they give alot of common ideas and tips in it.

I just started baking bread this summer, I use the bread machine to mix it and then let it rise and bake it in the oven. MMmmmm I have found some good recipes, but I haven't found "THE" recipe yet! But the family (and birds) enjoy the testing, so I will continue.

I have the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes and make bread several times a week.
I tried using DH's bread machine and after two failures I started making the artisan bread. I have been using the recipe with the olive oil....great for loaf bread, baugettes, pizza dough and strombolis.
I have never had any bread fail using any of the recipes in the book.

Hi all! Patty! Thanks for sharing those pics. I hadn't seen them before. I think I need a few more tree's to try different ways of growing. ;-) Hi Josh! Yes, I know you do :-) See, another tree, and I could do as you do, and then let this one go to see what happens. I really want the pink variegated I saw at HD! It even had a nice size lemmon! 5gal. for about $25 if I remember. It does have several side branches, but short now and they blend due to the leaves. Mike~ Tree seems Ok today. Just checked. We had a hard freeze last night and I forgot to cover it(I'm sick and was in bed by 8pm! :-( ). But I have it under a shrub which is a pretty warm spot (micro climate) compared to the rest of the yard. It has a few yellow leaves, i'm assuming not fed well or at all by grower/wal mart. I will give it a shot of MG today till I can get better. Is it ok to move it to gritty mix this time of year? Or weather is so flip floppy! But it's been a warm winter with spring like days and cold nights. Yesterday was high of 51* but water in dishes outside froze. lol.. Today will be high of 53*. Warming up to 60's next few days. Or just pot up and put some 5-1-1 around it for now, just to get it in a bigger pot. Right now it's in a tall narrow one. A slip I think it's called. I live in the Northern Willamette Vally in Oregon, and the rule of thumb, (sort of) seems to be that if they are in the ground, most can take full sun, if its not in too hot of a micro climate, (think surrounded by black top, or against a hot wall.) Then there is another bit of Fuschia lore that says that the orange tones, creme, and some others can take sun better that some others. I dont remember if that meant others that were pale pinks and lavenders or others that were the deep reds and blues, but some types are definately more heat and sun tolerant. to my knowledge, none of them love soggy cold soil though, and if that were my plant, Id probably gently unpot it, and loosen up the soil by mixing in a bit of some dry compost, then repot it and maybe bring it inside at night or cover it with a piece of plastic, even an old plastic picknick table cloth will do. You can just slide it under a deck chair and throw the cover over that if you dont have a cold frame. I know that after a while it seems pretty simple, but when I was just starting to collect these I lost them every so often, and in fact I still loose a few every winter. Not a happy thing, but we are all learning. The good news is,this spring more than 60 made it :) Dont give up. It might also have been stressed when you got it, and with some TLC you will be fine

Yes it does. Plus there has been 1 or maybe 2 other editions in the interim. But the 100th anniversary edition - the peaches one - has several new recipes plus some guidelines changes in it. There have been a couple of previous discussions here - one long one last summer when it came out that should still be here someplace - on this new edition with specific details of the recipes and changes. Being that I just got the BIG one, it will come in during the winter. Thank got we have 10 foot ceilings! My places has an EXTREMELY bright exposure during winter on the south end of it, and my other pigmy date thrived inside for a few months last winter. I do not really do anything special do it, just water it regularly. They do however get plenty of direct sun most of the winter through the winter. When I move it inside I next oct/nov I will post a photo of it in it's indoor home. I dont have a large place, but I do have room enough for those. The biggest challenge for the big ones are space, and moving them in and out. Good thing is that you will only need to move then in and out twice a year. The large one, believe it or not I am able to lift the entire thing myself. It weighs about 85 pounds or so I would guess. It is HEAVY for sure, but not to the point where I can not lift it. That reminds me, I need to go out and take a couple more photos of it because it is blooming like crazy. Ill post those pics here too.

I love kneading the dough and get to that satiney smooth feel to it. Besides...it is wonderful therapy to sling that dough around some...LOL

There is a bagguette recipe that is to die for!!! And extremely easy to make just takes a little bit of time, but so worth it for a good loaf.

I have a recipe for "Soft and Fluffy Sandwich Bread" that is wonderful. It also makes the best rolls I have ever tasted.

Soft and Fluffy Sandwich Bread

3 cups unbleached all-prupose flour
2 tsp instant yeast
1 1/4 tsp salt
3 tblsps sugar
4 tblsps unsalted butter
1 1/8 cups lukewarm milk(1 cp + 2 tblsps)
1/4 cp potato flour(or 1/3 cup potato flakes)

Combine all ingredients (reserve about 1/2 cup flour) and mix thoroughly in large mixing bowl.

Add reserved flour a tblsp at a time to mixture until a soft, smooth dough is formed.

You may not need the whole amount or you may need more.

Anyway, add just enough flour until dough comes away from bowl and it doesn't stick to your fingers. Remember, the more flour you add while kneading, the heavier and drier your loaf will be.

Turn dough out on lightly greased surface and knead for a while, about 10 mins.

cover and let rise for about 1 hour, until puffy (dough might not double in bulk)

Transfer dough to a lightly greased surface and shape it into a 8" log.

Transfer log to a lightly greased loaf pan (8 1/2 X 4 1/2) cover the pan with greased cling wrap loosely.

Let dough rise for about 1 hour, until outer edge has risen about 1" over the rim of pan.

Preheat oven to 350

Uncover pan and bake for 35-40 mins, tenting lightly with foil for the final 10-15 mins if the top is browning too quickly.

Remove bread from oven, take it out of the pan, and cool on wire rack.

After 15 mins, brush with butter, if desired; to give loaf an exceptionally soft crust.

This recipe makes really good rolls too.
