need a gift suggestion....

The only person I buy a Christmas gift for is my Godmother. Last year I gave her a scarf from overstock.com (my mom said it was very nice and soft, I had it shipped directly to GA). The previous two years and most other years, I make her something. This year, I have been too busy with school to make anything.

She usually gets us a "muffin-type basket"- some years it has the BEST cranberry jelly!

I have not been to her house in YEARS so I have no idea how it is decorated.

Any suggestions?

Forgot to add that she is a nurse and enjoys golf (of which I know nothing!)

What about a Bath & Bodyworks basket with shower gel and lotion? You could get a neutral scent-like vanilla. Once I sent my Godmother a light silk poinsetta. A friend of mine gave me a box of See's candy last year that was excellent. They have a website.

One thing you might think about is a gift for grandma. I found a flannel print with "Grandma" written on it and have had a receiving blanket made for all my friends who are becoming grandmas. Or maybe a portable crib set up for Grandma's house? Or baby monitors for G'ma's if baby will be spending time there. One of my friends who recently had a baby says that they are now recommending that babies not sleep with blankets after they are out of the swaddling stage. They are still useful, but every shower I've been to they have received oodles and oodles of blankets. Since you don't know the mother/baby well, as lovely as that blanket is, I think it would mean more coming from someone who is close to the mother/baby so they can always remember this special blankie was given to you by Auntie Marie. The dr. recommended things like this for sleeping instead. And since you live in cold country (don't you?) maybe a nice snowsuit...perhaps in a size he can use in the future, along with some great snow boots? Sometimes just silly little things are entertaining for kids - we try to keep a basket of brightly colored flashlights at the beach, amazing how much fun kids will have with those in the yard at dusk and later when adults are sitting on a deck and end of the day is coming. They get to take them home when they leave, their very own flashlights ;)

I like the book of poetry idea, is there an author local to you? Even if she doesn't read English, a beautiful, (illustrated?) slim volume can be treasured. Or, is there a local artist or artisan? I got my brother a handsome artisanal quilt for house/cat sitting while we were in North Carolina for a few months. To your other comment, when I was in Normandy 40 years ago, there was so much appreciation and affection for Americans. It was really eye-opening for me as a teen. My DFIL fought in the liberation, in Holland, and went back every 5-10years for observances that included luncheons, dinners, parades, laying-of-wreaths, staying with residents in their homes, and young parents bringing their children on their shoulders out to the events with "thank you" signs. His was not an American unit, I don't know who he fought under (he was Polish and escaped POW camp to get to England) but the sentiment was for all the liberators. I have always found the French to be so kind.

I love the locket idea, but I think I would save the idea for later -- a birthday, Christmas or just because in support after he is gone. I wore a locket with my boys photos when I had to travel on business. The only negative in my mind is that it is personal to her and whether that is okay or not depends on when it is given and her sensitivity -- both of which may be uncertain now. I think it's better as a gift to just her when it is just her. Even though she may be the only one to see or enjoy any gift b the time it gets there, it is a wedding gift. Etsy has a number of lighthouse paintings. DH and I received a framed watercolor from a friend of my mom's. I thought it was a very bold and unusual gift -- one I doubt I would have thought of, but it isn't large and there has always been a place for it and it is very special to us. Some lighthouse charms and lockets came up -- you could give them a painting and her a lighthouse to keep with her too. Your heart is in it -- you will figure it out.

If there is any way to find out the name of her favorite golf course, you could give her a certificate for a round or two.

A poinsetta or other flower arrangement. It's pretty, seasonal, and can be thrown away after the holidays.

How about some cute golf club head covers?
Or maybe some high quality golf balls.....not the kind available at Walmart but from a golf pro shop.
Or a couple of cute golf bag towels......

Lynn, what are considered "good" golf balls? I know there are different brands and am sure some are better for distance or whatever but I have no idea!

Titleist, ProV1 or ProV1X are good for distance. She will love them!
