A million don't buy much here in So Cal but I could certainly figure out things to do (in my free time since I would retire) with $250,000,000.

A quarter million could go fast in California. I could the first 50K to upgrade the house. Another 30K for a nice new mid sized SUV. 20K for a new roof, general repairs and paint for the rental. The 150K left over could be a down payment on a small rental property. Gone.

Not saying that is how I would use it. Probably would share with my kids (26K each) do some needed fix ups and put some into savings. But it isn't a lot of money really.

I don't play the lottery so it isn't going to happen.In California (with super lotto plus) if you take a lump sum the amount you got would be 45 to 55% percent of the jackpot. If you took payments 25% would go to the feds. Over 26 payments a million dollar jackpot would net you 700K.

It would be nice..but I'll bet it brings alot of headaches along with it. People come out of the woodwork needing loans and such.

Well, first, there's taxes. After that, it would be pared down to a size I could wrap my mind around it.

Lauren and I were just talking about buying the abandoned Home Depot building in Frankfort and making it into an Animal Shelter. LOL! It's fairly new, huge and hasn't been occupied in probably 2 years. I think it would cost a ton to maintain, though, so on second thought I'd just build them a new bigger building out by the old one here in our town. I'd also donate a new swimming pool to the town. Haven't had one in a few years after they filled in the old one. They've been raising money to build a new one but it's just sitting in the bank because someone got the bright idea to build a stupid, more expensive water park. So, they're waiting for more money? I think.

I'd then fix my little house and yard up, sell it after I built a new house. Then I'd travel the world when Lauren wasn't in school.

I honestly don't know how I would spend millions of dollars.
DH and I were talking last nite on having 20 million. We could comfortably spend 5 million....housing, family and charities and vehicles. That leaves 15 in the bank, earning decent interest. What do you do with it?

You've got what you want, your family is comfortable, the charities you care about are taken care of. Now what?

The IRS would help you spend that pretty fast. I wonder what their take would be - 70%? I don't know.

Here in Canada, lottery winnings are not taxable. What you win is what you get.

Yeah, the tax amount right off the bat is a bummer. I've often thought about people who win millions then rush out and buy these McMansions and cars - what happens when they spend all the money. How do they maintain the new house and cars when it comes to upkeep and taxes? I guess the first thing to do would be to find an honest financial assistant to invest some,ect.

I say I would save most of it, but when you actually have that much money available it would be hard not to indulge yourself or gift it.

I have a friend in CA whose neighbor is a young woman in her 20s. Her mom won the lottery and shared it with her 2 kids. The girl has a house worth about $600k, 2 cars and she travels. I am wondering if she is going to run out of money.

Have you ever checked out the cable show How the Lottery changed my Life? Have a look and do the opposite of what the true knuckleheads (easy to pick them out) did with their winnings. One guy bought two standing stuffed polar bears and has them in the living room flanking the front door to his house (big waste of money) and also spent some on hair plugs for his bald scalp (BIGGER waste of money).

Oh that show makes me laugh! No wonder a lot of people end up where they started before they won!!!

Lily - it's interesting you think these guys are sketchy - because they appeared serious and didn't go ga-ga about winning? Or are they sketchy because they're well to do? I heard they planned to donate a significant amount to charity which is nice to hear if they are already wealthy and don't need the money. That might be a better outcome than what some people end up doing with lottery winnings.

I would do what I have been saying for years that I would if I won a lot of money. In the area I live in there are several old beautiful churches of all denominations. The stained glass windows in most are magnificant but very much in need of refurbishing. I would pay to have all those windows brought back to their original beauty.

Then I would take Sue shopping with me to assure that I get the best value on my purchases with what was left.

I heard on the radio that they were donating it to fund returning soldiers from deployment. What a wonderful way to share the wealth!

I just saw them the one nite, apparently they are representing a client of theirs, who wanted to remain anonymous. Perhaps he is the one donating some of the money.
