Guilty little pleasures

Once or twice a year, I just have to have a can of Hormel Tamales.

And there is a specific procedure for this little ritual.

Take the yucky wrappers off the outside of 2 tamales

Put them in a bowl and cut each into 4 pieces

Pour a little bit more of the sauce from the can into the bowl

Put the bowl in the microwave on the defrost setting so they are heated "gently"

Cut two nice thick slices of sourdough french bread from the loaf (must be the long, skinny loaves!)

Slather with butter

Put on a plate

Remove tamales from microwave and put plate of sourdough bread in there on the defrost setting for, like, 10 seconds

Just enough to melt the butter and make the bread all soft

Take alternating bites of tamale and bread

Save about 1/4 of a piece of the bread to soak up any drippings left in the bowl when the tamales are gone

How's that for weird??? LOL

Not weird at all. I don't eat mine on bread. Otherwise, I use the same recipe and make it about as regularly as you do! LOL

Nothing to do with food, but...
being in the horticulture industry April, May and June can be insanely busy. 10 and 12 hour days 6 days a week. In the middle of this I'll take at least half a day or even a full day and travel to a bunch of greenhouses and nurseries just to wander around and see whats new. This probably doesn't sound like that much but, I was raised with this strict, German, work ethic. To go do something just for fun while there is work back home was unthinkable.

Thanks for making me pull 'whimsy' out of the pile and actually plant it, lol. The plants in the wall planter are sedums. The common name is pork and beans. This little birdhouse guy is mocking the bad grammar on the highway sign that I made into a canopy. It stops the rain running off the roof from beating the soil out of the pots below. I found him at Home Goods and painted him to look more like terra cotta. These cute ladies show up at the thrift stores once in a while. They end up drilled and planted like everything else here, and are standing in old cd racks. These are wine coolers, aka wine bricks or wine crocks. I find them at yard sales and thrift stores. Also drilled and planted. The racks they're sitting in were thrown in the dumpster by the hundreds when a video store near here closed. They're hooked to the wrought iron fence and sit on the bricks. These cute ladies show up at the thrift stores once in a while. They end up drilled and planted like everything else here, and are standing in old cd racks.

Dan, Sorry, I don't mean to hijack your thread. Dave, Here is a pic of my 'St Mary's Broom' planted on 9-2-02. Here is a pic of my 'St Mary's Broom' today. The plant measures 24" x 26". I'm pretty sure this is 'Globosa' rather than 'St. Mary's Broom' since the center of the plant has a depression in it and it just does not look like 'St. Mary's Broom'. And from what I have read, 'St. Mary's Broom' should not grow this fast. Here is a shot of the plant from the side: Your opinion? Thanks, Mike

I am a true fan of The Walking Dead. I even went to the place where they film it last weekend, about forty five minutes from Atlanta. Not to catch a peek at the zombies, but to push my product. It's a little historical village where they are bringing in old houses and fixing them up. They even have built brownstones and industrial lofts for a million bucks a pop. I love love love the housewifes of Beverly Hills and New York and even the goofy girls of Atlanta. .....Jane

I have watched some of the shows mentioned. I like reality shows. I know that a lot of it is fake or edited to create drama etc, but I think it's so interesting to see how other people live their lives. I don't have to agree or understand it, but I'm fasicnated with it. I love House Hunters, but I'm not embarassed about that. I know lots of people who like to "look" through the different houses. I learn a little bit from the House Flipping shows or Mike Holmes construction type shows. Primetime television is so filled with trash, sex and violence so I don't want my DD's to see that (they are 3 & 6) My family likes watching some of the Food Network shows. My DD's love Unwrapped where they show you how certain foods are made (usually fun ones like ice cream or snack foods). My DH likes the history part of it and the kids just like the candy! Kid in a Candy Store or Cupcake Wars too. We were even watching a game show last night! But when they are in bed-My guilty pleasures would be...Sister Wives, Hoarders, My Strange Obssession, and throw in Days of our Lives once in a while! When I was single I would spend my Sundays doing laundry and watching cheesy Lifetime movies! Used to LOVE them! There is also another one-a Canadian show for Teens called Degrassi. I watched it when I was a kid and it's still on (new characters). Even though I am old enough to be their parents now I still like the new shows!

My guilty pleasure has to do with horticulture too. I'm a horticulturist who is not at the moment practicing, but I'm still addicted. We have this AWESOME botanical garden in Sarasota, Marie Selby Gardens, which has a wonderful orchid collection. Every spring, I visit there alone or with a friend, and take my time, stroll the grounds, buy a new plant or book, and then have lunch somewhere nice. If I'm alone, or my friend wants to, we then go clear out to a nursery called Crowley's and wander around aimlessly, just looking at all the wonderful plants she has. It's a day from heaven for me. I may not spend a penny there, but I always come home feeling refreshed.

junkyardgirl, I have a couple of friends that I used to travel with to waterlily symposiums and iris conventions. Just being around them....their enthusiasm...always made me come home inspired.

Ang, I used to eat those tamales too. I haven't had any in years....I will have to go out and buy a can and see if I still like them. :))

I don't have any pleasures that I feel guilty about. But, some of the things that I love...Grape Crush soda in glass bottles. I try to limit myself to one a day, but since I buy 3 or 4 six packs at a time and I always have so many of them around, it is hard to drink just one...and usually I have more.

I love talk radio. One of the stations in Houston made some changes and have this morning show...Walton and Johnson. I love them. They have been around for years...various places and stations, and are a little controversial for some people's tastes. I am so addicted to them that I turn on their station at 4 a.m. They have a rebroadcast of the previous day then, and then their regular program comes on at 5:30 and runs until 11 and then the hour between 11 and noon is a rebroadcast. I don't even turn up the volume of the tv any more. I just listen to the radio. Finally, someone who thinks the same way I do!

Another pleasure is sleeping with two or three of my cats. Always Peaches and Peanut. Sometimes Flicker Girl or Quarter Pounder. I just sleep better with a cat.

The last thing I love to do is talk to my possums. My husband always fusses at me when we are doing chores because I have to talk to them all and maybe pick up the little ones and cuddle them. He says it takes me too long to get chores done....but what point is it in having possums if you can't talk to them? :))

Oh...one more. Marbles. I love marbles. I never can find any around here at sales I go to, so I bought two big collections on ebay. I have spent several days going through them and sorting them and every time I look at them, I find new ones I love. I guess that is a silly pasttime for someone 61 years old. (Like I care!)

Mine would be going to a nice mall by myself have lunch walk around and window shop have a fancy coffee. I usually carry a magazine or book with me to read during coffee:)

This thread reminds me of when my kids daddy & I were first married. I'm from South Texas, home of really good Tex Mex food. We moved to Florida, Northern part. This was in the early 60's and there were no Mexican food restuarants in our neck of the woods and the closest thing I could find was Patio Mexican Frozen Dinners. Believe me, Patio or Hormel neither one comes anywhere close to what I was craving. I was never so glad to get home for my Mexican food fix. I haven't been back to Florida but I'm told that you can get Mexican food there now.

My guilty pleasure has to be ice cream. Almost any flavor will do.

I love Vienna Sausage with Trisket Crackers, Pickled Okra and a slice of cheese. I could eat it everyday for lunch.

Polish Sausage with Sauerkraut and Mustard on a Sour Dough Bun!

I had a peanut butter and banana fold over sandwich at 4:00am when I couldn't get back to sleep.

I also get hungry for Pickled Beets.

DW loves pickled beets and makes her own. They're just a little too "earthy" for me.
