3 Dog Night

In the post about pets sleeping with us, it was mentioned by Lazypup about how the group got their name. my son Scott is on an oldies radio station and older celebs often come to town to play at Casinos around here. 3 Dog Night came one weekend and Scott interviewed them at the radio station, then Scott's late wife (our Dir_tyfingernails from KT) chauffeured them around town, Brainerd Mn) in a vintage long Cadillac and then to the Casino/hotel where they stayed and performed. Oh and Harrietta's chauffer name was Nurse Good Body. Believe me a good time was had by all. I got to meet them briefly and they seemed like nice guys. Another oldie group we got to know a little was The Little River Band. Those Aussies were a lot of fun. One, Greg, even played on Scott's softball game for one evening and had a blast. In Scott's line of work, he interviews a lot of 'oldie' celebs. It's fun to hear about them when he tells me about it.

Anyone else getting extreme cold this week?

I am blessed with no work today, but got up early to put wood in the stove. As I came downstairs, the front room was wall to wall people !! Husband on one couch, son in law on the other, two daughters on the floor, and in between them is the 6 year old grand daughter. The temp inside said 74, so not too bad at all-... I turned on the TV, and the local news said it was -19 degrees outside, with a -39 degree wind chill.. We have about 15 inches or more of snow that has fallen over the last 3 days, mostly from lake effect snows from Lake Michigan, and the roads are thick sheets of ice. It has been too cold for the road salt to work. They have closed the local schools, which hardly ever happens, and quite a few other places too. The high today MAY reach 3 degrees. The last time it was this cold was in 1972... We may not see the 30's untill more than a week from now. Spring seems so far away, maybe it will come early this year, it's real hard to believe it will when it's this brutal outside. Stay warm , and safe... Sandra

Well, here we are in the deep, deep freeze. No more snow as yet but what we have is staying for a while for sure! It was -34C this morning with the w/c of -48. That is pretty cold I'll tell ya! Feeding the birdies 3 times a day to help them keep warm. Oats and straw for the city bunnies. They look forward to food they don't have to "find". DH has thawed the food for the big birds twice already today and just went out for a third time. I feed them catfood and bread and just about anything they will eat. Gonna start making little sweaters for them! Kay, I have at least 2 dogs in bed with me every night and I get about 2 inches of space to sleep on! I don't mind it these days as most nights have been 3 dog nights! I do have to share tho and my husband gets 2 of them! And even they like to curl up under the covers lately! NOTHING growing here except the cold! :) Ginny

Hi Islandgal I think for now the cold is worse than the dryness that you are experiencing in your garden, it reminds me when I lived in Arizona and everything was so dry. And I looked at your blog and you tamarind writings. Remind me of me and my childhood, I love tamarind! I have one now, the sweet kind in the outdoor bathroom protected from the freeze. Silvia

I was born in 1961, and grew up listening to everything under the sun, but my penchant has always been rock. I've never liked CSN&Y, and while I enjoyed James Taylor, Carol King, et al, I never collected that genre of music. If it was something my Dad could yell "TURN THAT D*MNED THING DOWN!!" then I listened to it...loudly. My brother and I had bedrooms at opposite ends of a long hallway and we seemed to compete with one another as to who played their music louder. And the funny thing was we had many of the same albums, so we'd play different songs from the same album just to make each other mad. Of course, we mainly did this when Dad was at work... I now have most of the 'albums' on CD, and soon, on my iPhone. The only vinyl I own now is my Dad's old collection...mainly Louis Prima, Sergio Mendez, and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.

Please do tell your version of what "3 Dog Night" refers to. I know of one version, but would like to hear yours since you were much closer to the source. My version is about surviving a cold night.

Jemdandy,,,,I think the version you mentioned was the same as Lazypup's. I guess I never even thought about how they got the name. figured they just pulled it out of the air. Anyone remember Strawberry Alarmclock? How in the world did that group come up with that name? LOL

As for Scott. He went through a real rough time after Harrietta died. We were afraid he would even quit his job, but he finally went to a grief support group, which helped tremendously. He met a gal there, Sue, who also lost her husband about the same time as Scott's wife. They became friends and are now living together. I am always impressed on how she honors Harrietta's memory. As for the radio station Scott works at, The compassion and generosity they offered him was heartwarming. When Harrietta was sick and going through numerous trips to the cities or having surgerys, even towards the end when he just wanted to be with her, they gave him the time off....with pay! Not too many companies out there with a heart like that.

Dotmom what a great story! How wonderful that Scott has recovered, and met someone, and how lucky that he has a wonderful, compassionate employer.

3 Dog Night were terrific, and Little River Band!!! Oh I love them too.

What a fun and interesting experience for them, Dotmom. :)

As I mentioned in the post about sleeping with our pets, and in response to Lazypup's story about the meaning of 3 dog night, my friend, who was the band's original manager, agrees that is how they got their name.

Over the years, it's been so interesting to hear Dennis talk about his years with Three Dog Night and going to the Grammys with them twice, once in LA and once in NY. I was
surprised when Dennis told me his favorite song of theirs is "I've Never Been to Spain".

Dennis was also a hit Los Angeles disc jockey at the time and over these same years was the manager of Steppenwolf and The Turtles. So much fun to share his memorabilia and listen to those times. He said it was almost like babysitting. LOL
