From your kids? I did. Want to know what my dd (ll 1/2 years old) wants this year?

DS Nintendo games (she asked her father for one and he told me the other day he did buy her one and some games)

The following movies: Spaceballs, Balls of Fury and Epic Movie (what's with all the "ball" stuff?)

Beef Jerky (I always put a pack in their stockings)

Infinity (I don't know what this is)

a Golden Retriever puppy (yeah right, I want one too but who's going to take care of it?)

Sims games for PS 2

black combat boots (hmmm...I like this one, better than the "hooker" boots we've fought about lately)

My son, who's 15 has very few things on his list:

an electric shaver (he hasn't started shaving yet but has had a mustache of sorts for a couple years now)

a USB mike for his computer (I just hope I can find this without messing up and getting the wrong thing)

an XBOX 360 (which he knows he probably isn't going to get unless I find one on sale, like clearance sale priced.)

an Ipod (which he claims I can get at Wal-mart for $99), not a shuffle, those are "gay".

WOW card

Assasin's Creed for PSII, which they don't make. (which is probably good because I don't like the sound of the game, sounds too violent)

I asked, but didn't get very far. Only 1 DD said a gift cert. for a clothing store here. She's lost quite a bit of weight since her divorce, working full time, going to school, and two kids, and moving. None of her clothes fit. Her almost 11 yr. old DD is the same size. My DD is on the small side, and her DD is 5'2" and wears a size 8 1/2 shoe.
So, the rest will just get Gift Cards if I don't hear within a week from them on what to get.

My kids are pretty good even though they are married with kids. Even the grandkids have been good. They know if they ask for lots, they might get nothing.
I usually give them a couple of items, or money towards a big item, or gift cards.

I too started here, reading, trading, growing. Let me share what I have done/learned. First off, as of yesterday I am the official keeper of over 200 varieties of OP tomatoes. That does not make me an expert, but it does show my involvement :) Let me tell you that, for one...I have a similar climate as yours, 45th parallel near Canada. I grew in two ways last year; containers and raised beds. My first year to incorporate containers...3-7 gallons. In the containers went farm dirt, taken from a former dairy farm. Raised bed #1, which I will be referring to was screened topsoil as I have clay and many ROCKS. Some mulch has been added to bed #1, but it is NOT farm dirt. The containers produced fruitful. I grew Farmer Reds...I have some to trade but can't find any information on them, they were more an orange red and about 9.5 oz and good to eat, I also grew Gardener's Delight (cherry), two others but the memory is fuzzy this morning. I keep a small notebook and do recommend that you document as well, as much of what I will share is right straight from my notes :) Bed #1 got these in order (I even drew cute little pictures :) -Brandywine Pink, Mr. Stripey (yellow with red streaks), Rutgers, Marmande, Gardeners Delight. Across from them in order-Brandywine Pink, Roma, Gardener's Delight, Yellow Pear, Amish Paste. These were started in the peat pellets and up on March 17th, I was ancy with spring fever. All other plants came up later. I used indoor lights in a homemade stand using a heat-controlled electric warmer that I get at resale shops for like $3. They were the healthiest plants and I put them in about 6 weeks later (calendar is not close to me). We still had frost going on...I hardened them off maybe 2-3 days then planted them. When frost warnings came. I used styrofoam cones and rocks to hold them down. All survived and thrived. This bed actually produced plants over 7 feet! It was a chance though...the rest of the plants in other beds all matured and faired well. Additional plants grown in other beds last year were; Beefsteak, Large Red Cherry, Orange Banana, Gold Currant, Yellow Cherry, Brandywines, Italian, Delicious, Black Prince, Evergreen, Sunburst, Silvery Fir. In one garden went unidentified mix of colors from a packet...I don't recommend that-not knowing what they are until maturation. I also ended up with a beautiful unknown pink paste (I did save seeds). Now how did I like them? For me the best sandwich slice went to Mr. Stripey...wow, I never had a tomato like that. Gardener's Delight, Yellow Pear and Gold Currants were yummy candy. Brandywines were good...I enjoyed their size and taste. Rutgers, Marmande, Farmer Reds, were always there to be picked, a matured earlier and very similar. The green one (Evergreen) was the best green salsa ingredient ever. Used that with the type of Mrs. Wages salsa mix that calls for cider vinegar to be added. Sunburst was pretty but bland. The currant and other small cherry (not mentioned) wore me out picking. The best pastes I grew-Amish, edible off the vine. I will update my inventory list of seeds Monday (three days from now). I do TRADE! I have every variety I think you mentioned trying. I will enclose picture to this thread hopefully. This year is a radical growing year for me, not only will I try new ones at the homestead in beds, but I am now the catalyst for a community garden with access to 8 acres...garden one will not be that big I ensure you. A jug of Febreeze. I'm quite sure the guys in my son's dorm never did laundry the way you and I think of laundry...they Febreezed--EVERYTHING--shirts, jeans, sheets, towels, probably their armpits...lol I second the OTC med/first aid kit. Send the minimum until you know the kiddoes your son will be rooming with. Things like Sudafed can be abused. Still...I wish we'd done this. There was one very miserable night when my son (no longer in the dorm) called to tell me he was sick. Based on past experience, I knew immediately he had strep...probably 103 fever, raging sore throat, chills, in short he was alone, several miles from a store and miserable. I can guarantee you I spent a miserable night as well. While he was at the pharmacy the next day, I made him stock up on Tylenol and such. Extention cords and power strips. My son's dorm room had two outlets. Boys seem to need their electronics...Xbox, DVD players, Speakers system. Hopefully you can coordinate with the roomie so they don't overlap too much. Personally, I'd love to see game systems banned for dorms, but I'm sure schools fear no young men would come to school. lol Remember, you can't prepare for every instance. What you hope to see when your son or daughter goes away to school is some of the resourcefulness you've taught over the years. Do they know how to find information? Do they seek out the best way to do things? Can they face a challenge and deal with it? (Like getting a ride to the store when they don't drive. It's perfectly do-able.) Have fun and remember to enjoy these next few months.

I had a very quiet Christmas, and just as well because it was a stinking hot day (35C at 7am!) and there was no energy to breathe, much less anything else. My son and his lady came for breakfast, the first of many visits they had scheduled for the day. This was just fine by me. I got them when they were full of Christmas spirit, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and by the time they left their appetites were ruined for everyone else's food! The best part of the breakfast was that THEY did all the cooking - I just 'supervised' and provided the food. We had a lot of fun and laughter together exchanging our little gifts, and when they left, I was able to recuperate by sleeping most of the day in front of the fan, or beginning to read one of the several books they gave me (from a list I'd prepared of Must Haves). My sleep was, however, disturbed by a number of phone calls from interstate friends, all very welcome. And in the evening a friend visited, ostensibly to watch Dancesport on TV with me (we are both into ballroom dancing), but mostly to escape her rowdy family at home after a mountain of a day. (She often uses my place as a refuge when things get A Bit Much.) In between these interuptions, I had the opportunity of watching all those silly little Christmas shows on TV. You know, Frosty the Snowman, The Little Drummer Boy and so on. I have a sneaking liking for these little things - maybe I'm in my second childhood! All very pleasant indeed, thank you.

The greed, the one upmanship, the avariciousness, all turn my stomach and have for years." I'm right there with you. I don't buy my dd anything most years. I do the stocking stuffers. She gets everything and more from everyone else. I hate the whole commercialism, greedy greedy greedy, gimme gimme that has taken over the November-December months. Hate it. Often she will get too many toys, and I will just scoop them up before they are put under the tree (I get a lot of stuff from family off the internet, and then I am the one to wrap it) and put it in the closet for the next time. This will be harder as she gets older, but for now it works. She just gets too much stuff. Love the tree. Love the lights. Love the music and being warm inside the house with a fire or baking. I just really don't want to do the holidays. They make me sick to my stomach. Someone mentioned going to a womens shelter with the pre-holiday clean-out stuff. I think we'll do that this year. KKNY, your posts on this are really bugging me. I don't make $100/hour. I worked very hard for my degree and don't have the luxury to go back to school. It is really hard for me to stomach you saying it's hard for you when your ex lives high off the hog when to me, and I'm sure to others on the board, making $100/hour is several times higher than my income. To me, that is high off the hog. It's all a matter of perspective, is it not? And yes, to those who do not have the kids 24/7 like some of us, it is easier to buy bigger gifts and look like a champion. Isn't that often the issue with NCP? I understand that often the more one makes, the more one spends. The quality of life bar is set higher. "...I agree that there is never any need to tell children what you earn. "...I just think if you are going to say how long Dad and I would have to work, then you should be using your current hourly after tax rate..." Ok, I don't get it. Don't tell them what you make, but don't tell them it's minimum wage. If you're explaining the truth, shouldn't you talk about taxes too? If I were to use Sweeby's suggestion, I would probably use $5/hour because it's nice and round and easy to grasp. Going into the issue of savings, bread and electricity is just way too much information. I agree, education usually increases earning potential. Telling kids that college is good for the brain and the wallet is good. But this is not about talking to children about higher education. This is explaining the cause/effect relationship of work vs gifts and the relationship of kids who get a few nice things and kids who live in shelters. It's a basic lesson, not one that they will be recalling the amounts for when you are filling out college applications (but mom, I thought you only made $8/hour!) Gimme a break.

DD (14 yrs old) wants a Coach purse (and not a fake one! she made clear!), a new digital camera and a Holister gift card.
Better than last year, her list was all gift cards to different stores she wanted.

Kathleen, I laughed at "not a shuffle, that's GAY". I can definitely hear my daughter saying that! LOL!

I am 36 and my mom still asks me for a list every year. This year I can only think of pillow shams and some BE eyeshadow.

Not sure if you're aware, but Epic Movie has nudity and some urinating and vomiting gags. I enjoy the movie but I am not sure it is appropriate for an 11 year old. Just wanted to let you know in case you didn't know about the film.

Our kids (now in their 30's) always wrote out a Christmas list in order of what they wanted most down to lesser items. We got them however much we could, some years more stuff than others depending on finances but they always got the top few items, they knew not to ask for things too extravagant.

I asked the 2 grandchildren who were here Thanksgiving what they want, and the 14 yr. old girl said gift cards to Barnes & Noble. 10 year old boy said "everything!" *LOL*

My sons a bit young for a list but I always get the lists from my friends kids, currently age 11 and 16. And these lists are long and ridiculous!! They add stuff they know they'd never get, but they are so funny though! They figure if they're going to wish, they might as well wish big.

My kids say "I don't know." I told them I don't even know where they sell "I don't know." I'll wimp out and give them money, I always do! I'll take the 7 yr. old sweetie pie to Toys R Us and let her pick hers out. Then we'll laugh about how she'll have to act really surpirsed Christmas morning!

When they were little they did...and I've kept most of them because the wording and spelling is just a riot to read!! I used to type a letter from Santa and put by the Santa gifts too..it broke their hearts when they found out there was no Santa...so they still get something from Santa!!

My DD has always given me a list and it probably on has about 1 or 2 things that she knows she'll probably not get but it's nice to dream. She saves the list every year on her computer and just updates it yearly. She always makes sure to put down movies and CD's she would like, which is good for the grandparents. Also, she knows the grandparents will not buy her anything that has nudity and thankfully she loves Disney movies so they can always get that. Oh yeah, my DD is 20 and her grandparents still won't buy her movies with known nudity. I think that is funny. Luckily DD thinks this is very sweet and she has never complained about this.

My parents must have asked for lists, but I don't remember how that worked off hand. I remember my mom giving me mall gift certificates in high school. Then one day during the school break she and I would spend a day shopping. I liked that, it was a promise of a girls' day out. My aunts, mom's sisters, have no kids of their own so they spoiled us absolutely rotten at Christmas. I know they asked for lists from us. They gave us gifts plus filled very big stockings for us, so they wanted a "gift list" and a "stocking list." They still want gift lists, but now they want a "family list" that includes wants and sizes for myself, DH and all the kids. One year I registered the kids at toysrus.com, thinking I was being funny. But my aunts were thrilled, it made everything easy for them! They are actually very good at picking gifts for my kids without a detailed list, though. My aunts try very hard to make all the grand neices/nephews happy. My parents also want "the list." DH's parents send us a family check to use how we see fit. We usually get a family gift with it, last year it was a ping pong table. That made both the givers and receivers very happy.

My kids never ask for a lot. If they ask for something I know we will not get them, for either money or it's just not happening, I tell them so. I don't want them to get their hopes up and be disappointed.

My 14 y/o also wants an ipod, the nano with a video screen, the smaller memory version is about $150. It's the only thing he is asking for, so his chances are good. (But don't tell him that.) I've suggested to family to get him gift cards to music download sites. So I guess I'm sorta committed! LOL!

My 11 y/o is only asking for the Magnetix roller coaster set. So he'll probably get that, too.

DD is 8. She asks for something different every day! But she's consistent about wanting a child version of a sewing machine. She will be happy with whatever she gets, she's easy to shop for.

DS 5 y/o is only asking for his "OWN" legos and a puppy. (There is a sibling feud over legos. LOL!) The puppy has been on his list since he was 2. Poor thing is disappointed every year. Couple years ago he picked up one box and guessed "I think this one's a puppy!" It was a sweater, and, man, was he bummed!! He was truly upset, but him expecting that sweater box to be a puppy was so darned funny we couldn't stop laughing at him! The other kids wanted to pick up every box and joke "I think this one's a puppy!" But doing that only aggrevated the whole thing. But, he's optimistic that this will be the year. When asked what he wants he doesn't say "I want a puppy" he says "I'm getting a puppy." And they look at me questioningly. I guess he figures confidence will make it come true. My aunts (all dog lovers) even asked if they could get him a puppy. They are willing if I will give the OK! Uh, NO! I do not need another living thing to clean up after! (We have 2 cats, anyway.)

I ask...and most years I do get them. This year, Kalie wanted a camera...already gave it to her and Caryn ask for us to buy the paint for her house...already done! They will have stocking stuff, but that is about it. DSS & DIL sent me a list...which was very resonable and I have filled just about all of it! =) They will all get some cash in their stockings too.

for dd2 and sil gift cert for lowes, another dil, one for penneys (she wants shoes) dd2 we got a jerseu for local team and tools... clothes for dd1, his wife, picture frames for her new home office...found a fantastic huge collage one...dd1 like little things, but we're surprising her and sil with a inexpensive curio cabinet...also got them fun jackets...

as for the 7 grands...it's been tough and finally gave in on the chinese toys...:( i just couldn't find what i wanted...and believe me, i did every search of am-made toys...

My kids usually give me a list but this year they haven't...they can't think of anything they want! I found some nice gifts anyway. I got a Bissel carpet steam cleaner for DS and DIL #1 and for DS and DIL #2 an all in one photo printer, theirs was cheap and broke a few weeks ago. Our youngest son is getting the cell phone he wanted. LOL @ the "gay" ipod...I got DH one! He won't care, but my son said it's "gay" too....I told him not to tell his dad that. He really isn't into all the bells and whistles, just something for work and something easy to use. I got it for 40.00 online, I knew it was a dinosaur now with all the newer stuff out, but it's ok! I am getting him the Bose earbuds for it though so he should be a happy camper! I also got our 2 son's and DIL's dutch ovens, panini makers and a bakeware set from Temptations on QVC...I love that stuff....so pretty and practical!

We do ask for lists, my DH and I have 5 kids between us. For the most part we do get each one several things on their list. This year we have gone the fewer gift but big ticket item method. We have a budget for each child and really have to stick to it. We are surprising DSD (she's newly married/baby) with a camcorder, we got a great special @ Best Buy for $280.00, flannel sheets, ice bucket and got the baby a few things. Since she is married now we go the couples gift route, don't think she is necessarily happy with that but her budget has to go to 3 now. Last year we got them a gas grill. The other DSD we got a laptop at Best Buy and that will be it and will tell her it's her b-day gift also.. she is not expecting it at all, she asked but we made it very clear it was too expensive. They had $399.00 special on a Toshiba, I hope it works OK. We got another DSD a digital camera and will give her money as she is going to Italy/Cruise on June with her grandmother. My daughter asked for Northface coat, Ugg boots, expensive perfume.. I certainly don't remember asking for the things that these kids ask for. I will get her the winter jacket and have some ideas of my own, I gave the list to her father also and hopefully he will get one thing on the list. And as far as my son goes, it will be some simple kitchen stuff and money. It feels alittle weird to buy just a few items and that's it but it reduces the stress of shopping for 5 children and having the huge pile to wrap etc.

I use Facebook and wrote all of my kids along with my daughters boyfriend and said if I don't get a list, all they're getting is turkey dinner. My husband and I spent two full days Christmas shopping and all I came home with was underwear for me! LOL

I have been so lazy this year. I don't want to shop and try to decide and spend endless hours in toy stores, debating over what they would love. So for the grandkids this year (9 total) SO took the parents of each shopping and let them pick out exactly what the kids would just love. They are all already wrapped and ready for Christmas.
DD age 17 wants a tattoo. I have agreed to sign for this. We are going next week to get it(a dove on her shoulder). She is an honor student, She will be receiving a scholarship to a wonderful university, where she will begin classes next fall. I only tell you this so that you will know that she is not a 17 year old thug.LOL

My kids are 9 and 13, and I don't ask for a list. I sort of take pride in the idea that I can look at their lives and their interests, and pick a present that I know they'll love.

I do ask them what they want to ask Santa for, and we go to Macy's every year to ask him. (this is very different from when I was a kid--we didn't ask Santa for anything.)

So far I have been able to deliver the "Santa present" each year, by knowing about it far enough in advance, and by "steering" them as they plan what to ask him for.

This year may be the tough year; DS sort of still believes, so I don't want to flat-out say, "look, I'm not buying you that," and he also is giving me worries that he'll pick something I won't buy him--like an Xbox or some big game system (which I will not buy--the Gameboy is enough). And DH was alerting me that both kids are wishing for a Nintendo DS, which I'm not sure about either.

This may be the year I insist they give Santa a short list to pick from.

My 2 GK's that live up the street,told me the other day what they wanted,i don't have a clue what they were talking about.Told DH it's probably more than i want to spend.We have 6 GK's,3 GGK'S and 4 kids(grown) of our own.

The 8 yr old up the street loves to read,and will read anything including the wrappers on the toilet paper.He also loves to look at maps,any kind.So i think a trip to Barnes & Noble are in store for his gift.His sister is going to be 13 next tuesday and she is one picky girl,so i don't know what we'll get her.

The GGK'S are easy ,i got them a bunch of clothes ,and books and will give their moms a gift card for them to toy's "r" Us.
