Slugs!

Mon I found one of these nasty things on the kitchen floor (no outside door) Last night I found one in the kitchen sink. eeewwwww That was even worse.

Is there something to do to keep them out? No idea where are finding entry. I've put salt around the back door when I found one in the kitchen a few years ago. That worked. BUT I don't know where they are coming in & sure don't want salt all over the floor.

Any suggestions appreciated! TIA

I don't know of any possible suggestion to keep them out when you don't know how they are getting in!

Have you brought some plants in for the winter?

Thank goodness no snails or slugs here. Way too cold in the winter, but no tomatoe worms either. People here don't even know what they are.
Never had them in the house in CA. Maybe they are coming in on something--pets? clothes,

Dilution, as mentioned above is "whatever is left in the coffee pot" so the dilution would be however you make your coffee. ;) And a definite no, it should NOT be sprayed on the leaves. I haven't seen that as tested or recommended anywhere in the many discussions on it. If it were to be used as a foliar spray it would have to be severely diluted in order to not harm the plants. It's generally recommended as a soil treatment only. This is for slug control - slugs are ground dwellers. Liquid coffee or used coffee grounds can be used in moderate amounts around most any plant except perhaps legumes as they don't tolerate extra nitrogen well. Dave

Coll, you say" So I either spray and melt them on the spot or cut them in half with a tool if I have one handy. I read that if they have even one eye left, they will live. You can squash them with your foot, but cutting them in half is just making two of them, or so I assume. This is really a gross subject, reminds me of a slobbering bulldog with strings of slime getting on my hands, and I really don't like that....although bulldogs are fine, nothing against them, just their drool!!! You all have some exotic slimeballs to deal with, mine are all one kind, that wet gray color. My turtle disappeared, have not seen any frogs or toads this year, so it is up to me and the ammonia and Sluggo Plus and any other chemical in my arsenal. I had to stop with the pellets while it was raining so much, but now I must resume the back breaking job of spreading Sluggo on the ground, and ammonia in the pots. It's amazing to me that tender plant roots do not die from the ammonia, because it destroys my skin if I come in contact with it--or bleach for that matter. After I treated some plantaginea with a bleach solution for foliar nematodes, I had dermatitis for two weeks....it got on my hands and kneecaps, don't know how that happened.

Thanks for all the comments and helpful hints. I put the cheap Walmart dry dog food out in the evening and kill the diners at about 9PM and maybe again at 10PM. By morning it is typically gone, even though it was often sprayed with the ammonia. As it will stay light later I will have to adjust the schedule. Recently my nightly kill dropped to 20 one night, so I skipped about a week. I will put out the dog food tonight. Ok this will sound gross, but they also like chewed up chocolate or chocolate cookies. The very weird thing is I had a liquidy chocolate that I deposited on the ground. I did this about 4:00PM, then went to a play. Came back and checked about 9PM. I thought that the way the chocolate dropped to the ground and worked it's way into the dirt that they would be working on the chocolate awhile. Surprise, the Chocolate was ALL GONE, not a trace in all 8 spots. Wish I saw what happened. I may try that again tonight.

How do you get slug slime off of painted walls?

Sligs come in to our basement and move across the walls leaving trailings. Soapy water has not done the trick, even using a soft toothbrush. isnitnsafe to use dilutes vinegar on painted walls (dry wall base)? Thanks in advance for help!

I had that too. They were coming in through the hole around the dishwasher and other water pipes, under the kitchen sink. Try there!

If you can figure out their route, use Sluggo (iron phosphate). Or you can sprinkle it around possible routes and hope that they will eat the stuff and crawl off to their little deaths.

Or - make a slug trap. Half fill a small, flat container - like a margarine tub - with cheap beer. The slugs will climb into the tub and drown. When the slug coffin is filled, put the lid on it and toss it out!

I prefer Sluggo - the slug trap is too gross for my delicate sensitivities! ;-)

Those were the two primary methods I learned when I was a Master Gardener. It would really be good if you could figure out what attracts them to your kitchen, of course.

I used to have slugs outside. I'd pour beer in an empty aluminum pie plate and they would climb in and drown.

Thanks for the feedback.

No pets or live plants in the house. The only place i could think of is around the water pipes. Will have to check that & put down treatment when I get home this weekend. Hadn't heard of Sluggo -- I agree the container of dead slugs would be hard to handle!!
