Yardman -- I got an e-mail I think was from you, but my computer blipped as I was reading it, and it was lost, apparently forever. I think you were asking what kind of out-of-zone stuff I've got outdoors. Well, the short list is: agapanthus, alstroemeria, crinums, pineapple lilies, Southern magnolias, a Giant Sequoia, lots of bamboos of various kinds, Ruscus, and I'm sure others, but they escape me at the moment. I'm overwintering a lot of various palms in the greenhouse, packed in with foamboard, fiberglass, and dry leaves, supplemented with CFC lights, and I ran the little electric space heater five or six nights so far, ran my bill up about $25 over the regular amount, which I can afford. Andyandy -- Musa basjoo overwintering indoors -- all the time, my friend. Bananas are easy to overwinter indoors. I stick mine down in the basement in late October in total darkness, don't water them at all, and ignore them until April. I've got like 9 or 10 of them, including Basjoo, and have been doing this for five or six years. In that time, I've lost two of them to rot. Of course, if I had the room to keep them going as houseplants, that would work to, but I don't, so I just store them like giant bulbs.

Um, NO! Not missing the snow. I still have nightmares from last year's 4'-plus of snow (I'm in northeastern CT). One day I couldn't find a road that my car could drive on; kept driving around till I finally found a route to my house. Got stuck in the road once getting into my driveway. Locked myself out while shoveling snow off the roof above my deck. No gloves, coat or cell phone. Was afraid to call to the mail lady because I didn't want her to call the police for fear it would make the news! Finally saw someone on the next street over (it's below the 20-foot cliff at the edge of my property), who called my sister for me. Worst of all, my kitchen was being renovated during that time. I have a half-feral cat who goes crazy when he can't go out, even just to sit on the porch, during winter. One of the contractors arrived early, and scared him off, and I had to go to work. When I got back my cat wasn't around. I called and drove all around the neighborhood to no avail. Walked around, fell on the ice and smacked my head. There was a cold front and another blizzard coming in that night. The next day was beautiful, so I slid down the sideyard (I don't shovel the side) because the ice storm had packed down all the snow. Went all around the yard, finally heard him crying from my neighbor's basement in her garage). Finally got him in the house, took off my boots and couldn't understand why my socks were pink. I had cut my legs on the ice! Also took a flying leap off my front porch steps. Whole body ached for days. No, I don't miss snow!

Snowbound? I feel your pain. It's piling up out there!

By the time it stopped snowing at about 10am this morning, it had piled up 11 inches and deeper in places of minor drifitng and of course, the snow plow "gifts" on the sidewalk. The snow was too deep in many places for my 2-stage snow blower - it came over the top of the auger housing. That meant I had to a lot of backing up and making double passes. I should have gone out last night in the middle of the storm and made a first pass. The reason I did not was that I waited until the street plows had made their passes because they always cover the sidewalk with street gloop. Well, how short my memory from last year - should have made a first pass last night. It would have kept the depth down to a manageable height. I had to dig out the mail box and newspaper tube - found today's paper buried in the tube. Ah! We get a rest, and then we will get hit again Saturday night with an Alberta Clipper that teams up with another low pressure system, and then the bottom drops out of the temperature. Yes, Virginia, we will have an abundace of snow for Christmas.

But, oh, Santa is bringing loads of snow for our Christmas ski trip to Steamboat Springs! Snow totals are already surpassing historic averages for the entire month of December with more to come. DD lives in Steamboat full time and reported that it was really dumping this morning. We will arrive Friday and according to our SIL we always bring more snow with us. My mom will be visiting for the first part of the trip and I probably won't get much skiing in until she leaves, but I can't wait just to be there! If I see Santa I'll be sure to send him your way.

We have rain here in central Iowa. Not too many miles north of here it is changing over to snow. We had a bit this weekend, and looks like this coming weekend we will have some more. Oh well, it is winter in IA!

Here in Central Alberta, we have no snow yet, we usually get it right after Halloween, it seems so strange not to have it yet.

None yet...most we get on Vancouver Island is a couple of inches (maybe/perhaps), but sometimes I wish for the snow as it seems to brighten up a dark and dreary evening much better than the rain!

Calgary had about an inch of snow last week, but it's all gone already. We usually get snow in September so this was a treat.
