Twilight Series for boys?

I'm looking for books for my 5th grader. He has already read the Harry Potter books and is looking for something else to get some big points to meet his AR goals. I have the first two books in the Twilight series, but haven't read them yet. Would they be appropriate for a 10 year old boy regarding mature subjects? Are they girly? I haven't seen the movies either so I don't know.

No.....I would NOT recommend them for a boy. The books are more of a "romantic" genre.

How about Maximum ride by James Patterson. It's a series for kids. The kids are a genetic experiment, being chased by the govt....they fly.

I second Nicole's suggestion. James Patterson wrote a couple of books for adults about the same thing. Although the Maximum Ride books are not considered sequels to the adult books, the subject is the same. I haven't read the series yet, but have collected all but one of them. They sound like they'd be just right for his age group (and older).

Go to your local parts store and they will be able to help you find the proper plug. Great find and I hope you get it working. The older lAWNBOYS are great units but anything new is just some mower that uses the lawnboy name and even looks cheap.

Lawn-Boy is known for the 2 cycle engine and built it's reputation on it for decades. Keep a new blade on it or resharpen it yourself often. You need to clean and re-oil the air filter more than once a year. Do it at least twice or three times per season. A new plug once a year is good advice and use gasoline stabilizer in your gas. Using a synthetic 2 cycle oil will eliminate 99% of the smoke and the carbon build up as well. Do not loan the mower to anyone without strict instructions on refueling with the proper gas/oil mix. Even then someone else could inadvertently add some straight gas and it's over.

As usual, Walt brings his wisdom to the table. There have been numerous times I have had an engine without spark, and the first thing you think of is the coil. Many times after replacing the coil I would still not have spark, until I replaced the points and condenser. Then I would go back and replace the new coil with the old one, and much to my surprise, in a lot of cases, I still had spark. Bill

I have been using my M-Series mower for 28 years, and not at all gently. I still use the original oil injection system with one slight modification. The safety float switch that detects when the oil level is low and disables the engine has been eliminated. The delicate magnetic reed switches fail from vibration, and they're prohibitively expensive to replace (just for the part cost, if you can find one). So, I just make sure the tank never gets too low (it is translucent after all, and the level is easy to see. I've cleaned the check valve at the injector port a couple of times over the decades. If it gets dirty and doesn't seat well, oil drips into the crankcase while the mower is sitting in storage, making it smoke like an old factory for the first few minutes of operation. -- BTW, I've also eliminated the safety switch at the bag/chute attachment point. Similar delicate magnetic reed switch, which no longer detected the bag and wouldn't allow blade to engage. No problem. Just don't engage the blade with bag removed and stick your hand down the chute. Doesn't require a brain surgeon to be safe without the switch.

DGS was watching some movies the week-end of Halloween, mystery type for kids...I think on Nic? Not sure what channel anyway I sat down awhile and watched with him. Come to find out they were R.L. Stine? He was amazed when I told him his Mom and Auntie used to love the books by RL Stine! He said he has books? LOL
Hunter is 10 also and I thought he'd like these books.

Thanks for the suggestions. I might use them for my 8 yo. My 10 yo has different tastes. He would only read non-fiction, mainly science, until last year. His teacher and I tag teamed him to get him to read fiction. Now he loves the Harry Potter books. He said he would consider reading the books with Percy Jackson. Dh and I thought we might try to talk him into some of the classics like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. DS is an excellent reader, but we have to control the maturity content so we like to keep the books around 6-8th grade reading level.

My 6 y/o DGD read the Percy Jackson books and loved them. (Yes, she reads that well. She is home schooled.) She is now reading the Harry Potter books.

I bet he'd like the Alex Rider books, by Anthony Horowitz. Alex is a teen spy, dragged into it a bit unwillingly but he's very adept and clever. We've read and listened to several of them and they're quite good.

It really depends on his reading level. My DS was into Robert Heinlein's books at that age.

I think he was reading Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles around the 8th grade.

He's always been a reader.

A 10-year old strong reader might enjoy Eoin Colfer's "Artemis Fowl" series.

My kids read The Hobbit in elementary school, and my son read the Lord of the Rings books in 6th grade.

I agree with others who said the Twilight series isn't appropriate for elementary school kids.

My son read Ender's Game in middle school, but he would have enjoyed it in 5th grade. You might check that book out and see if he might like it. Both my kids and I loved it.

My kids both liked the Artemis Fowl books pretty well.

The Guardians of Ga'hoole; Cryptids Hunters;Gary Paulson books; Roland Smith books.

Talk to a librarian at school or at the Public Library.

Hi, I am a librarian but not for the public library. I work for a college. But, I do see a bunch of stuff at the conferences and have kids. I would recommend the Weird PLanet series. Or manga, or the classic comics if he is into sci fi. You could always do Goosebumps or the Nightmare room.

My 16 YO son and 13 YO daughter both read the Darren Shan books, I think they're mostly vampire stories, there was a movie made from one (The Vampire's Assistant - I think)
They are more dark and gory than the Goosebumps but some kids like that stuff (I was reading Stephen King at 13) You may want to wait a couple of year for these but something to think about for when he's older.

My dd grew up with Harry Potter - her life basically revolves around it. Twilight was good but it sure didn't replace HP! The Twilight series definitely isn't for most boys (hey, some may like it), I LOL'ed at some of the guys I saw dragged to the movies!

Thanks! You've given me some more ideas. My kids are all really strong readers. My oldest has tested out at a 12th grade to college level reading. He can read anything, but the teachers and I are trying to keep it interesting and closer to his maturity level.
