Off subject warning: Are you the Monica_PA that was always decorating her house?? That put in a gorgeous floor in her kitchen??? It has been several years ago.....

Back on subject: What is Wegman's???? I am excited for you, but just don't know what that is...

Oh, I am jealous!
I would love to have a supermarket as wonderful as Wegmans in western PA!

And here I thought you were going to tell us you were flying to Rome. LOL

Wegmans is worth getting excited about. :-)

Yes, we did do the kitchen, and the floor is still beautiful.

Wegman's is a family owned chain, began in upstate NY, of high quality foods and service and at lower prices than the big nationwide chains. They have been rated as one of the best employers, nationwide, for the last few years.

It's a supermarket where you can buy things like Beluga caviar, live lobsters and truffles(not the candy) to hot dogs.

They sell prime and choice meats, and have real butchers who know how to cut meat.

They bake on the premises, and have a sit down pub restaurant (drinks served where local laws permit).

All that at lower prices than national chain food stores.

Maybe they'd like to expand to the Chicago area. Safeway is shutting down its' Dominick's grocery operation here as of the end of the year. Four of its' 72 stores have been sold to Jewel, the largest chain here.

Monica - I read the article in the Inquirer about your new Wegman's. All I can say is congrats! And it's about time.

I have 2 near me - my favorite is the one in Mount Laurel and then there's one in Cherry Hill if I'm in that direction, but it's the one by the old Racetrack and the traffic is awful.

I have a Wegman's five minutes from my house. I go every Wednesday.

Wegman's sounds like a store I would love to have in TN. Maybe some day they will come down south.

Have fun shopping in the new store.

My Wegman's is about 45 minutes away. I love their tofu and produce. And those big packages of boneless, skinless chicken breasts, individually sealed. And pardina lentils, which nobody else seems to have. I hit Wegman's once in awhile because it's off my beaten path, but my kids shop there often.

I go to the Wegman's in King of Prussia. Love that place. Sometimes my friend and I even go there for dinner.

The closest Wegman's to me is 50 miles away. Next closest one is near Harrisburg, PA.

I like Wegman's but I certainly wouldn't call it cheap. Or cheaper than other chain grocery stores.

They do have all sorts of cool stuff, not just groceries. One of my nephew's used to work at Wegman's.

The nearest one to me is about 30-40 minutes away, so it's a trip I haven't made yet.

I get their roasting chickens every week and in the summer their skinless chicken breasts basted in lemon garlic sauce for grilling.

My cousin lived in NY and knows the owner so she shopped there for years. Then she moved to York PA and went down to their store in MD almost every week. Then cousin moved to SC JUST as the one came near me. She said there's nothing like it where she lives. I buy half of my groceries there and the other half at Giant which is three minutes from my house.

I especially like their app because it tells me which aisle something on my list is in. I don't think they are very competitive on meat pricing. I do better by shopping the other chains and getting their "meat specials" that week.

I do like the store. Ours is maybe a year old now. And less than 10 minutes away.

If you have the freezer space, the large (bulk) meat prices are good. I like the large packages of individually wrapped boneless, skinless chicken breasts, center cut strip steaks and pork tenderloins. In the summer we buy large briskets to put on the smoker.

I think their prices on staples are have more competitive - as least in my area. But like most supermarkets, they have eliminated carrying multiple brands in favor of their own brand (which is quite good) and one maybe two other national brands.

The one department that I find disappointing is the store bakery. The breads are very good and they have a wide selection. But I find most of the desserts are lacking in full, rich flavor.

Customer Service is excellent.

Oh, I know how excited you must be!! I'd waited years, hearing Wegman's praises sung by a friend in another area, before they finally arrived in Mt. Laurel and Cherry Hill.

Since we moved, Wegmans is one of the things I really miss. We always stop in and shop when we are back in the old area.

Enjoy!!!

Lucky you. Sounds like a store I would like to shop at.

That sounds like a great store! Maybe they'll come down south one day.

Maire: I agree about the bakery dept's desserts: All fluff, no substance -- carrot cake is blah, their vanilla cakes are packed with way too much frosting. But their pumpkin roll is (usually) terrific -- I say "usually" because a clerk told me they've just changed the baker that makes it for them (I thought they were in-house?), and the first round was lacking, so they pulled them from the shelves and had the baker tweak things. But they still don't taste as flavorful as the version from last year and the prior year.

Monica: A TRUE Wegmans fan would be camping out to be one of the first to get in! So I hope you took your heaviest down comforter!

I don't buy dessert bakery items so can't comment on them. Their baguettes and breads are good though, and my kids love their sushi bar. . They sometimes don't carry brand names you might expect like Minute Maid, but their house brands are very good.

You will love Wegmans! I especially like their "bulk" dried foods. There's one near my sister in Western New York. I'm planning to visit her in February, till then I will have to go to my local Trader Joes.

The first time I shopped at one of those was when I was staying on Long Island for work. It was close to where we were staying, and I had no idea how special it was.

Until I went IN. OMG. The milk aisle alone I was almost in tears. Not only did they have organic milk, but several brands and kinds and styles. I remember they even had unhomoginized milk in glass bottles, and we paid the same price as what we pay for milk in Canada (granted, that is more expensive than what regular milk costs in the US).

Dry aged cut to order steaks, I remember that as well.

Congratulations! Buy something good for us LOL!

Dances.

Well Monica it's been over a week - have you Wegmanned yet?

I want a Trader Joe's too.
