Drugstore and Christmas Music

Because of many customer complaints our large drugstore chain stopped playing their Christmas music, which started the day after Halloween.

The news article did say that they will start playing it again in the middle of November

Christmas music is nice, but not so soon. Let your store now how you appreciate it. Even mid Nov is a bit much for me.

I don't have a choice right now, as most stores don't have their bulb displays up quite yet. Very soon, though, every store will have a display of Amaryllis bulbs in the most common varieties, and a few will even carry one or two not so common types. I'm waiting on the garden center to show their offerings. They usually have at least a dozen varieties, sometimes more. Just their fall bulb choices are spectacular... the tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, and other spring blooming bulbs... they do have a wide variety! Last time we were there, some dark red tulips followed me home... and some lovely daffodils with a peach colored cup. I think that if you're going to have an addiction, bulbs are probably one of the better things to cave in to! Just think of the horrid habits we could have picked up! A long time ago, I bought a little Ti log at a grocery store... it was the most fun to grow! I remember it was in the produce section... and the directions said to peel the wax off the thing and just lay it in some soil in a pot, and water it. It was foolproof! It sprouted a little plant, and I had it for several years... I don't remember whatever happened to it... that was a very long time ago. I haven't seen those Ti logs offered anywhere in forever. That was fun, though! I recently looked them up, and was surprised to learn they come in different colors... green, red, variegated. I've killed a few orchids in my time... but I think I'm getting better at keeping them alive! I have a small collection of Phals, Encyclias, Dens, and a few odd others... they're hanging in there! The biggest hurdles seem to be giving them enough humidity and light. Perhaps some day we'll actually be able to travel... I'd love to spend about 2 weeks in Europe... just exploring all the gardens and bulb growers! What a treat that would be!

OR I do have cables I can hook on the hard drive and transfer anything to a large stick drive I want to keep. my goodness shades! how do you do that? I got a new computer and now have to get my stuff off of this old one and onto the new one... do you know how to get things like 'favorites' list and the list of frequent sites used off of one? I hate to lose all of that and have to start over! there's a program called 'PC mover' but it really doesn't get great reviews! also, I'm looking for a tablet (or maybe even a laptop if cheap enough) for a friend who is also disabled. she is 60 and in recent yrs spent several months in a coma and just recently lost part of a lung. she is living with her mom (who is 88) now. she moved home yrs back to care for her dad when he was dying - it was after he died that she collapsed and went into a coma. I want something with big enough screen for failing eyesight (at our age) and good sound for our failing hearing... a keyboard (that clicks) or at least port to take one for typing emails. she'd most likely will only use for emails, skyping with her kids/gkids (and friends - me) and surfing on web. her kids/gkids are in another state. she has little (very little) money and I think it difficult to keep $s on her cell phone to talk much to kids/gkids/me. I don't like to pry too much about it. I have asked some on the phone and told her I'd be much more than happy to send her money to help with phone so we could talk more (and even for her to talk to her kids/gkids). I'm blest that long distance is no charge on my LL. She is concerned that if her mom dies the house will be sold and she'll have no where to live. She doesn't like either sister enough to live with...lol! i sure wouldn't want to live with either of my sisters! and doesn't want to go back to home state because it's too cold there (she's been in a bit warmer area for a number of yrs now). I will invite her to come live here - but not sure she will because it is so much farther away from her kids / gkids. they're just in the northern part of the state to the east of her now. anyway, any recommendations on what tablet to get her? I like the amazon fire hd 10 but it is so expensive with 32 gb. people tell me that with only 16 gb it isn't very useful. I do like that it has Alexa. that would be very handy for her! I'd like alexa myself. maybe i'll get me an echo dot down the road a bit. I'm not sure how good of a speaker the dot is tho. or even how anything connects to it. I got rid of my big 'ol wooden encased speakers when I moved into here. qvc had the tall echo on sale a few weeks back for about 100.00. great price but that's the first I'd heard of such a thing and I watched it just to learn about it.

We sing in a Christmas chorale and have to memorize all our music. That's pretty much all the Christmas music I can get into. We have a local radio station that starts playing non-stop Christmas music about a week before Thanksgiving. I refuse to listen to that station any longer. There's only so much Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas and Brenda Lee's Rockin Around the Christmas Tree I can stomach. I only listen to Sirius radio, my iTunes music or one local talk radio station. If there is a weather emergency and I happen to be in the car, I will tune into a local station for updates.

I love Christmas Music. I listen all year off and on. And I get very happy when I hear it on the radio or in stores. The Christmas season, to me, is too short and flies by too fast. I guess I can understand why one might be annoyed at what a store serving a large amount of people might choose to do holiday wise, I do NOT understand the comments here speaking with such disdain about what people choose to do in their own homes and yards. That's just weird. I remember during my first job at Subway, at age 15. I would get yelled at or whined to by whole adults about things that I had no control over. The store didn't accept a certain coupon, I got yelled at, they were unhappy about the amount of meat on the sandwich, I got yelled at. It was a corporate formula, calculated for food cost and such. What could I do about that, other than offer to add more at an added charge. Also, not in charge of prices, still got whined at for them. And yes, the music. No one was ever happy with the music. Every time I got raged at by an angry adult over such things I would think "Are you dumb? What am I supposed to do about it?" Things like that would absolutely ruin my whole day because I was a people pleaser back then, and it did make me feel powerless and an utter failure. Glad I grew out of that. Now, when, for example, in my current job, I have to enforce a rule or a LAW for heavens sake, and one of the drivers gets mad, I do ask them if they are dumb, and if they think that I make the laws dictating how heavy they can be? Or if I make the policy that they cant be on their phone while they are loading or whatever it is? That usually makes them calm down. But the actual dumb ones keep going. Doesn't ruin my day anymore though. Looking back now at my Subway days, those people should really be ashamed of themselves. And they should have just stayed home and made their own stupid sandwich how THEY like it, and played whatever music they wanted while eating it. But back to the topic, sort off. Stores cater to the majority. Clearly, something is giving them the impression that people are eager to kick off the celebrations. But its a trade off. Happy people spend money. Unhappy people make noise. Do you think the people who benefit from the happy ones care about the people that have to deal with the noise? Here's a hint: no.

I love Christmas music but it's a bit early. If we, the customers, don't like it this early, can you imagine how the employees, who are prisoners of the stores must feel.

My favorite piece is "Sleigh Ride" (I think the version by the Boston Pops). But, yeah, it's just a tad too early for me (since there's still Halloween candy on the shelves!)

Gosh, Mare, I hadn't thought about those poor people who work there. Day after day of that would be a nightmare!

Yes....it is early but the Canadian Thanksgiving is before Halloween.

Speaking of early, I saw Christmas decorations in craft stores (Hobby Lobby) this summer when I was on vacation. They were being put out - not last years clearance stock.

Today I found a Christmas card in my card basket that comes with a CD of "Children's Classic Christmas Songs". I bought it at DG for $1 a couple years ago and never sent it. So I put it into the CD player of my computer while I read emails. The songs are from recordings made in the 1940's or 50's by the sound of them. I've never heard of "The Reindeer Dance", and it has both the vocal and instrumental versions. ha. Plus versions of traditional carols. Of course being only $1 and from DG, it has its quirks - Frosty the Snowman is there but the title is not on the list. Fun.

This is the time of year I taper off on going into stores, because of the music and the crowds. 24 hr stores get more business from me.

There's also the "rush" to see which radio station is the first to flip to all-xmas. Should be one doing it soon. Something radically wrong with that IMO.

I would be happy if they played Christmas music all year 'round, LOL!

I love to sing and sometimes I catch myself singing a carol in April or May. It's not that I am so into Christmas, just love the music.

They were heavily bombarded on the social network(s), it appears. And they listened ... and got a lot of publicity over it, for it was spoken of quite a lot on various media: how often does one qualify for such a large bucket of free advertising ... especially of the laudatory kind?

Quite a few up here said that at least they should hold off until after Nov. 11, Remembrance Day, when the vets march to the cenotaphs.

I remember back in the 50's when I was a kid they never played Christmas music in the stores until the day after Thanksgiving. I hate when they put out the decorations early and also the music.

There's a radio station here that starts playing Christmas music all the time starting the Friday after Thanksgiving. I like it-puts me in the mood to do shopping, wrapping, shipping, cleaning and cooking.

To me it's not that they are playing but how loud. I was in an outlet store a few years ago and the college age kids working there had the music so loud I left the store.

I went to the mall yesterday and the music was so LOUD everywhere and a different song in every store PLUS out in rhe corridors. When DD and I went to eat lunch I went back to a booth as far as I could away from he door. What a relief for my ears. I love Christmas and the music but it's too soon.

Every store is decked out and selling Christmas stuff. I sent to Macy's first while DD had a short appointment. It was supposed to be 10 minutes but he was behind and it lasted an hour and a half. I did a lot of walking around the mall yesterday!

Macy's usually has many trees decorated in different themes but this year there were less than half of what they usually had. They usually have bins of the ornaments around the bottom of each tree but there weren't any this year. I heard a lady ask and the clerk said you just have to take them off the tree . . . there aren't any in the back. If you don't get what you want now you won't get any. Those trees are going to be bare soon. Christmas orniments are 40% off already. The stores don't want to have much left over after Christmas.

That's pretty much how it is every year here in Hawaii. Everything sells out early and fast. Partly because most people have to mail their gifts to the mainland or overseas.
