Ceramic knives

Last week, DH came home from the hardware store with my dream knife for the kitchen.

A kitchen knife with a super sharp ceramic blade.
And, it's not heavy.
It cuts through melon skins and raw potatoes like they are butter. No heavy pressure for arthritic hands,

He got it at Harbor Freight.

I love them too! with my hands they are a real help. BUT do NOT put them in the dishwasher! I learned that the hard way. My fave one and the biggest one which was not cheap broke after I put it in the dishwasher. Then I read on my new one it has a warning not to put them in the dishwasher only hand wash.
Plus be very careful they are super sharp, those things will slice through a finger real easy.

I got a few of mine at Tuesday Morning for very good prices.

I NEVERr put my good knives, silverware or dishes in the dishwasher.

Thanks for the post. I have quite a few Kyocera ceramics which I like because of the sharpness -- the "razor blade with handle" thing that makes them superior for many tasks. The edges no NOT hold up as well as claimed however, and I send them in at about 12-18 month intervals. If the Tachi's are equiv. or better and cheaper (internet search seems to indicate much cheaper!) I might be tempted to buy a few more. I will not be buying any more Kyoceras. Too expensive, too delicate, and impossible to maintain personally.

I had been on the lookout for some good steak knives because I just wasn't happy with the ones we had. We went to Cost Plus and found a little knife that resembles a tiny chef's knife. Blade and handle together come to 7 inches. It is labeled as a paring knife and cuts fruits and vegetables wonderfully. We initially bought two of them to try and man, they are wicked sharp. We went back and bought 6 more and they are my new steak knives. I also use them for paring knives, LOL. Cost? $7.99 And here is their description: Our Paring Knife consists of a German steel blade with pakka wood handle. It features a short blade with a tapered point for precision work on small food. Ideal for peeling apples and other fruits and vegetables, mincing small items like shallots and garlic, trimming herbs, creating decorative vegetable garnishes, such as radish roses and celery curls, and boning chicken. I used the cheese wedge knife to slice an apple this morning. It worked, but was slower than using a regular knife. I liked that I didn't have to twist my hand as much. It occured to me that knives with top handles may be more ergonomic than knives with side handles. That's why I wanted to find out what other options were available. That extra large half circle knife looks pretty good. Maybe a big knife with a rounded blade would be ok, IDK. The apple cutting involves 3 steps: chopping into quarters, removing core, then slicing. I usually do 12 slices, but 8 would be ok. I hold the apple in my hand for the last two steps. Maybe there is a better way, but I won't use it if it's harder to clean than a knife. I'm trying not to use my thumbs since one is inflamed. Even if it were healthy, why strain it if there is a more straightforward way to cut? Maybe I should get an apple corer that doesn't slice, and one of those big circle knives. IDK.

Just don't drop them either...MIne has been dropped so many times I finally just tossed it as it had too many chips in it....but boy did I love it...First time I see another I will buy it.

Monica, is there a particular name brand? My husband loves to go to Harbor Freight so maybe I could have him pick one up. Thanks.
