We had that when we adopted 1 of our cats too......I was so grossed out! I swear I did every piece of bedding in the whole entire house, plus anything else that I could! But it is a simple solution and as you said...doesn't really hurt anything...but YUCK!

DGS was here Sunday afternoon, along with his tired parents. His school called last week, "Come get your child!" He and eight classmates had head lice. After DS saw two live ones and two nits in DGS's hair, he shampooed the hair then got out the clippers. DGS looks like a refugee from a camp! Of course they had to wash everything -- clothes, bedding -- and vacuum the rest. The school did a complete washdown too.

When I worked at a state hospital years ago, they tested people for tapeworms (the patients). If any were found, we all took treatment. Makes me itch just thinking of it.

Does anyone know if there is an online site where you can buy Droncit? More than likely, that's the medication that the vet will prescribe. The cost for the pill is around $5.00 and it's very effective. If you can buy the meds, it will be much less expensive than the vet's office charge.

Ask me how I learned there are many different species of tapeworms? Some transfer to people easily; some don't.

Harry is a coyote at heart; he takes every opportunity to "mouse hunt" any time he's out in the fields and wind rows...anywhere the mice are. He even does the prancing "jump-in-the-air and land-on-mouse-with-your-front-feet" dance coyotes do. Toss mouse in air, catch it in your mouth, swallow whole. It's a very strange thing to watch. My dignified, well-mannered, fastidious Harry is turned into a primal beast...by a mouse.

The last time I was greated with a strange offering I rushed him, and it, to the vet. Vet examined it and said it was a form of tapeworm that transrfers only from mice...and you have to eat the infected mouse or its dropping in order to contract them. I was safe; Harry had a mega dose of something and peace and order was restored to the home. He was banned from the bedroom until the "all clear" test and everything was washed down even though the vet said it wasn't necessary.

His heartworm meds and flea drops take care of a lot of parasite problems, but that one tapeworm bypassed the system.

I hope you, and all your babies, are spared too much stress over this. Poor little guy; don't you know he's feeling blessed for having someone who cares about his health!

O.K., this is what I know about tapeworms, and I learned it the hard way. You CAN get tapeworms from your animals. Tapeworm eggs are microscopic, and you can get them from petting your cat, then not washing your hands properly before you eat. You can even breathe them in.

I am fighting a pinworm infection right now, and took an herbal parasite treatment that shocked me with what came out of my body! I actually had roundworms, pinworms, AND tapeworms. I'm not done with it yet. It takes a long, long time to get rid of pinworm, it seems, and I have them up in my sinuses, could feel them crawling around in my nose and eyes, and have pulled them out of my nose.

If you are a gardener and go barefoot in the yard, or wear flip-flops around, you can get pinworms very easily. I am totally obsessed with washing my hands now, and I wash all my bedding weekly in hot water, since my cat sleeps with me. I dewormed her and she threw up 7 roundworms on my back porch. I have to worm her every two weeks for 3 months to make sure they are all gone.

Also, make sure you don't eat undercooked beef or pork. Pork we all know about, but beef tapeworm can hide in undercooked beef and it can get up to 30 feet long! I used to love medium rare steak, but now it's well-done all the way.

This site has a pet formula that kills tapeworms in animals as well. The vet formula is iffy, and very expensive. I don't get any money from this, but I do believe in them.

Oooooh, I know how you feel, Dances! Once we took in an adorable black Lab and I deworm all my animals when I first get them. I had never actually SEEN the outcome of a deworming! I ran screaming from the yard when I was picking up his poop. Piles of long (6-8"), thin, white worms! ::Gag!:: Good luck, Dances! :)

One of my cats had tapeworms once. It didn't spread to the other cat. Ridding him of them was simple. I think it was just two pills (maybe they were a day apart), the 2nd one being just a guarantee. When the worms were expelled they were already dead.

No big deal at all.

Fleas, swallowed while grooming, are usually the source of kitty tapeworms.

As was said, a couple of doses of Droncit, given at home, will take care of it.

You might want to call the vet right away so you can pick it up before the holiday.

I had the same experience as Suzieque. Gave the cat pills, then she expelled them dead. No creepy-crawlies. Gross to even think about.

Aack!!! My puppy had tapeworms earlier summer. I freaked, but the vet and his assistant assured me they were hard to get. Two pills killed everything. Our kitten we brought home a couple of weeks later had fleas. A pill for that too. Both the cat and dog are on Advantage. So far, so good.

Oh yuck! Congrats on your flame-point Siamese though. They are known for being especially loveable. I have had siaese cats for forty years.

Chickens can be infected with pin worms. My sister and I, when young children and going barefoot, contracted pin worms from our flock of chickens. Pin worms are fairly easy to deal with; a tape worm is more difficult.

I just got a new Siamese cat too - an adult cat though. Fortunately he was treated at the shelter for parasites before I got him and he passed another fecal test before I let him out of quarantine to be exposed to my other cats. That is pretty gross. I got another stray cat years ago who was in bad shape and complete with all kinds of parasites. He was in quarantine for a long time and back to the vet for treatment a couple times before he came up clean. Good luck with that - yuck!

My friend was given an orange Persian kitten for her birthday a few years ago. My friend was not well herself and she just couldn't groom that poor baby like she should have and then she started letting it go outside with her other 3 cats and the neighborhood strays that she would feed outside.

When the cat got sick she took it to the vet and she had a huge tapeworm(s), was dosed and that kitty died. I felt so bad but she wanted that kitten and wouldn't let anyone else care for her.

We brought him to the vet for treatment last night. I know he gave him a pill, and also some shots but I think those were just update shots. We adopted the kitty from the Humane Society, but for the first little while you are technically "fostering" and need to bring the cat to them for any treatments etc.

I had no idea what the vet was saying to me most of the time. It was noisy, he had a thick accent, and we were busy trying not to get eaten by the biggest, meanest rottweiler ever seen that was in the waiting room. It kept lunging at me and DD, and when they brought out our kitten in the carrier it went BALLISTIC. Even managed to pinch me when I was not looking, through a muzzle!

Anyway. We bring him back early December to be neutered. Once that is done, we pay the rest of the adoption fee and he is ours for good! And no worms today, and none in the litterbox that we can see. So hopefully that is a good sign...I don't know how long it usually takes for the pill to work.

As for that dog, they were bringing it in to see if it got along with one they hoped to adopt. Yeah. Good luck with that.
