Do you use a woodstove?

When my kids were young we heated the whole house with wood. Our woodstove is a Jotul, the largest they sold back when we bought it, and we also used the less efficient fireplace sometimes.

We stopped doing this when my DH became too ill to cut wood, and then when I was alone I felt nervous about fire and was reluctant to resume using the stove, even though my son offered to cut wood for me.

Then I spent a gazillion dollars on heating oil last year, and was inspired to invest in a new fireproof mat for under the stove and have the chimney inspected. Last week my son loaded up his Suburban with wood he'd cut, and brought it over. He started the first fire, and hung around for a few hours to make sure everything was okay.

I'm enjoying the stove so much! It's near my desk, and the biggest thing for me is that it's keeping my hands warm! (My Raynaud's is especially bad this year.) Also, it brings back many happy memories of when the kids would congregate around the stove. Very cozy!

Unlike the days when we kept it going 24/7, I let the fire burn down at night. That stove can really put out heat, and I don't want to let it get too hot while I'm asleep.

How about you? Are you enjoying a woodstove?

Susan
