I would be suspicious as well, the English is obviously very poor and broken for one thing, and not dealing in her own locale is another. If she is truly deaf she should have access to a relay unit for the phone, or your friend should be able to speak with one of her children.

She could ask for a bank reference, account number included, along with personal references that your friend can verify.

In answer to your question, yes, cashier checks and money orders can be counterfeit.

And what's with all the peripheral people--her shipper, her housemate. It's impossible to get directly to this woman. Very odd, very suspicious. There's no way someone in Ga is going to deliver cash to someone in Ga.

I think, in the longrun your friend will come out way, way ahead if she bypasses this 'big' order. Sounds like a scam to me, too.

Scam, scam, scam, scam, scam...no doubt about it. I'm not a betting woman, but I will tell you this - if I ever offer to bet someone, you can be certain I'll win the bet. Every time. Tell your friend to run the other way.

I buy/sell a lot on Craigslist, and this is almost verbatim the language the scammers use. If I were your friend, I'd delete the message and fuggeddaboutit!

Thank you. I found when I get emails about outrageous stuff I can just pick a short phrase and google it, and often the first result is either Snopes or Urban Legends....thus it is easy to see if it is maybe true or not.

She's disappointed about it being a scam, but glad it she hadn't already placed the order! She DID call the phone number she was given in the email..but didn't get an answer! Wonder why? LMAO

Are you kidding? Did she actually for a minute consider this to be legitimate? No,no, and no. Delete and learn a lesson and move on. She must be naive.

Yeah...believe it or not, she thought it was real! She called me last night and told me about it cause she was so excited about getting such a big order! Then she started telling me things like she wanted to pay with a cashiers check and stuff...and it just threw up a red flag for ME and I voiced my concerns to her! She knows I question anything/everything...lol! Still, I think she was hoping it was "fer-real"!

Shaking my head at all of the scammers out there. I guess there are enough gullible people out there to make it worthwhile for them.

We get these all the time at our place of business too. Usually it's a priest from some foriegn country ordering a large shipment of glass. He's always deaf too. We have had them try to order from those systems that are set up for the deaf too. The ones where the operator is on the line reading what he is typing? The operators know it's a scam but can't do a darn thing about it.

Sure enough...everytime I post something on Craigslist, or even randomly, I get those stupid things....not the deaf mother, but the scammers....
I sold Sarah Coventry in the late '70's..I rec'd a letter in the mail saying that this man had got my name and wanted to order, could I send him a book. I thought sure..yeah...never see that again...he was in a larger town 25 mi. away...
I actually got a rather large And I thought I had wasted a sales catalog....
Now the scammers would put a real customer to shame having to prove their innocence...

Avon does not work like this. Please have your friend contact them, and the state Attorney General ASAP. Also here in ND, the media will release warnings regarding scams. Avon will not release names and addresses. I am so glad she did not get caught. Since I do not have a reg. rep. I buy from our local flea market, but even there I am careful, as some of the reps are selling out of date products. Just for a note, a rep buys directly from Avon and can sell the product for any price the want to, unless this policy has changed.

Oh, another thing, if you sell via mail, Avon ships directly to the customer and they(customer) pay the postage Again it use to be that way. Now, not sure.

Is this one where the "customer" sends the seller a bogus check or money order for more than the price and then says to send the balance back? Then the seller cashes the check, but the check bounces days later, after the goods and refund are shipped.

Mariend...I think Avon still works pretty much the same way! From what I read, Avon want do anything about it! I guess they are of the opinion that if you're dumb enough to fall for something like that, you need to be smart enough to get out of it! lol

She can still forward the email to the state attorny general's office, and to Avon, even if Avon won't do anything about it. The attorny general's office should.
