You can buy a toilet suitable for camping at camp or sports stores.

And as far as bathing, you can use baby wipes to clean yourselves. We did that while our sole bathroom was being remodeled.

I would get one of the camping toilets they have a sturdy base that folds for travel and a comfortable toilet seat, a big pail with seat on it could be very unstable and someone could get hurt or um messy.

I have not seen any with litter and if that were the way they go I would get a scooper to do the covering with not involve the hands LOL

I don't know squat about port-a-potties, but your story is just hilarious!! Having been a "squatter" in the woods when camping, a port-a-potty seems like a good idea. But why not just build a temporary outhouse? Dig a hole, slap up a few boards and you are ready to go! Keep us posted on the progress of this little project!!

Consider a Bedside Commode. It could be rigged with the bags and litter. (Pardon me while I laugh.)

If they have a fireplace suggest they get a potty chair like you use in your hospital room. Dig a hole and dump the waste in it every morning. Then use ashes every time he dumped the pot and fill it in with dirt when they leave. Our guide in Africa said they wanted him to have a tank in the van to carry human waste in and haul it out of the park. He knew he couldn't have that sloshing around below the guests. He told the park authorities, he would dig a pit latrine, have the guest put a scoop of ashes on their waste and it would decompose in a month so well they would be able to find it. After some research, they agreed. One park we stayed in had restrooms, but you could smell it before you could see. After that we really appreciated our pit latrine.

When I was a kid I did a lot of primitive camping with my friend's family who preferred to stay away from regular campsites.

We dug a pit and placed a toilet seat across a couple of logs. After anyone used it they threw some dirt over it. Before we left the pit was filled in completely.

Even using an indoor port-a-potty whether rigged up or bought I wouldn't be dragging the excrement home. Just dig a hole a bit away from the cabin and bury it.

When DH and I camp we have a potty in the tent. I line it with regular garbage bags with a disposable baby diaper in the bottom to absorb the wet for easier disposal.

I can't imagine squatting over kitty litter. LOL

My best friend had only one bathroom. Since a nature call sometimes interferes with br use, she got a camping toilet and has it in a corner in the utility room. She says, it is really handy.

But, on the other hand, a five gallon bucket with a little sawdust, and another one with lots to use for covering waste, would work fine too. Just put a toilet seat on the first bucket. :)

You can even dig a pit out back, and just dump the mess in there. It will all decompose.

How soon would a bathroom be finished? In the meantime I don't know if I'd bother with an outhouse. First, many counties have regulations on outhouses and they're not necessarily cheap for compliance. Why not rent a porta-pottie for a while? Or even buy one and sell it when you're done? Females might prefer a porta pottie over other options, especially involving cat litter. :) The other option is a chemical toilet, available from camping stores. Could be used inside the bathroom area.

Option 3: You have your chance NOW, otherwise you go in the woods or wait 'till we get home!

Option 4: Buy a bicycle and peddle to the nearest gas station or restaurant?

Option 5: Bake banana bread often and stop over to the neighbors. Use their facilities.

Option 6: Swim a lot.

So, how much hissing, growling, clawing and mrowing occurred? Did she arch her back and swat at him?

When we bought our old schoolhouse in the southern part of our state it didn't have a working bathroom. My hubby built a box and attached a toilet seat on top. Placed it up in the woods. Worked until we got the bathroom up and running. He would put lime on top when we would get ready to leave.. Needless to say it was nice when the bathroom got finished.. Hey ya gota do what ya gotta do sometimes..

When our kids were young we used to go camping a lot. A couple went with us that had a porta potty. He went to empty it in the restrooms. There was a guy in another stall. He emptied it and did the long AWWWWWWW afterwards. He left the porta potty in the stall when he heard the guy come out of his stall. He went to wash his hands and he got a chuckle out of the guys expression on his face. He took his porta potty and left when he heard the guy drive off.

Bro-in-law, Dave was just joking when he made the remark about Terrie scratching to 'bury' the stuff in the litter, but the look she gave him was part of why it broke me up, so.

It will be a while until they can afford to finish the bathroom in the cabin.

I thought it was so nice that Skip left them the cabin, even though they went up numerous weekends and worked along side of him when every board and nail went in, and at the end this is what he wanted.

As for using the kitty litter in a lined bucket, it makes sense to me. The wet product is contained in clumps and the solid is buried. Then all is disposed of. It doesn't make any difference as far as I can see....pardon me for being indelicate, but pee is pee and poo is poo...man or cat.

my husband said instead of using kitty litter it would be better to use floor dry. YOu can buy it at any hardware store or auto parts store. It is used to soak up oil or water on a floor. Its a lot cheaper than kitty litter.
