Are you going out on 'Black Friday'?

Not me! I may do a little on-line shopping today or on cyber Monday, but I will not be going out at 3AM! I have done it in the past, and there is just nothing I need that bad.

Looking for a good travel backpack for DD for her trip, but that takes research. I put hubby on that job, lol. We got DS a new 160gb ipod classic at Target for what I thought was a great price. Hope he doesn't let this one get rained on!!

Being in retail a long time I'm not surprised at all. Hopefully people will object with their wallets. This is another one that slays me....when large chains offers sales. In my state (Illinois) this is part of the consumer protection laws: It is an unfair or deceptive act for a seller to compare current price with its former (regular) price for any product or service, unless one of the following criteria are met: a) the regular price is equal to or below the price at which the seller made a substantial number of sales of such products in the recent regular course of its business; b) the former price is equal to or below the price at which the seller offered the product for a reasonably substantial period of time. I find extremely unlikely the big chains bring in merchandise and let it sit a full price for any period of time. But customers like to believe they are getting items on sale. I have a related issue pertaining to a recent online purchase my 16-year-old DD made for a pair of Ugg boots. It seems the transaction was for an online store in the UK and boots shipped directly from China. I only realized this after she placed the order and when the boots came in I wondered if they were counterfit; esp. as they came wrapped in plastic in a brown paper envelope (no Ugg shoe box). DD felt the quality was inferior to her friends who bought in stores. When I looked into the company in more detail they have a very restrictive return policy and seller pays the cost to return. DH is skeptical we'd even get our money back unless we dispute it with our credit card. I don't know if we could dispute it or not as we have no proof the boots are not what they say they are (they do look like Uggs and have the Ugg label), plus I assume we'd have to pay the cost to return to China. We paid $80 (or about 1/2 price what you pay in the store). So are they just a version made by Ugg but inferior quality for an online store, counterfit or are they genuine? Right now we're about ready to chalk this up as a valuable lesson for DD in being a savvy shopper and checking return policies more carefully next time unless anyone else has other suggestions?

People were allowed to take their seats early in the day so everyone filtered in. When it ended there was only one main entrance for every one to leave at once. The funnel effect. It was thousands of people. What happens is you get pushed forward by a wall of people. There is a force that comes in waves. I was being squeezed so tight my lungs couldn't expand to breath. Nobody behind me could back up. Nobody was going forward. My arms were tight at my side. I was panicking. I was in a similar situation, with a MUCH smaller crowd, at the movies in college. Add to that, the fact that I'm sort of short, and my friend in front of me was MUCH shorter (it probably looked like a gap to the people behind me, so they pushed harder, probably), we were being pushed DOWN, and losing our balance. I finally yelled out, something about, "Stop shoving, there's a person in front of me, someone's going to get hurt," and the pressure from behind stopped. But I'm sure it wasn't even the people directly behind ME who were pushing. Maybe, maybe, there were people 20 or 30 layers back who *were* pushing, but it would be hard to identify them. I think that store bears a huge part of the blame. The Who concert should have taught them something; they should have had stronger line control.

I could hardly carry the newspaper in from the paper box this morning for all the "Black Friday" store sale inserts! Weighed a ton, then I couldn't find the actual newspaper among them; went back out to the paper box and found it.

There are some great deals, but I won't be going out. Besides, pay day for me isn't until next Wednesday. :(

I'm going to the beauty shop for a hair cut, manicure and pedicure....maybe a facial. That is as close as I am getting to going out!

Gary and I will. We get up at 3:40 for work every weekday anyway, so it won't be that big of a deal to get up early one more weekday :-)

Plus, here (in Houghton, MI) there are no big crowds. Small town. Small crowds. Last year, I think there were maybe 30 people waiting to get into Shopko. Maybe the same at the mall. We went last year for the first time (here) and were pleasantly surprised and got a lot of great bargains on quite a bit of our Christmas shopping. So we'll do the same again this year, and top it out with breakfast out.

I went with my sister once, to Sioux City, IA (about 100,000 or so population) and it was awful. Would never do that again!

We weren't planning on it... but Rural King has a 20% coupon for any one item and we've been eyeing the leaf sucker things (the ones that pull behind your lawn mower). The coupon will save us $200. so I guess we will be going there. I have no plans of stopping anyplace else though.

Yep, going to get up and drive 30 miles to try and get the TV at Target. 40" for $298. I am afraid the drive will be for nothing, but we'll try!

Crazy as it is, yes I'm going. Every year a few of us go spend TG night in the big city, get up at 3:30 and take off to shop. We have rules tho. NO long lines, find the goods, pay and go. Breakfast and coffee between 6 and 7 am although some stores provide complimentary oj, coffee, donuts etc., a tiny incentive to stop there.
Younkers is usually our first stop, CVS pharmacy, Sears and HyVee grocery. We love the odd ball places for great deals. Last year HyVee had batteries, huge packs for 5 bucks, $25 gift cards with a free $5 to popular places to eat or shop. I-Hop had a good deal with their gift cards which included, free meals, $off etc. So we do our homework, get the best deals we can with out waiting to long in any store. Oh my fav,,, CVS has some super deals, Buy an item and get back an equal amount in gift certs. We can use the Certs the very same day, so it's getting items for free! I get the body wash, razors, lots of things I use everyday. Although I do buy some gifts, the day is more about finding the best deals of the year for home and personal items. The crowds have been friendly so far, I hope this year is the same.

Dh found a pack of batteries & something else he wants....

We don't "need" anything. But I like people watching, we get up early anyway.....so we go every year. It's FUN!

nope trying to navigate the stores and crowds while in a wheelchair is just too difficult, I can order online and get many of the same deals from the comfort of home.

Wild horses could not drag me out to shop Fri. In fact, I intend and hope to avoid all shopping other than the grocery, until well after the first of the year.

I would go if I could but I can't..I love the crowds. I used to work in the Mall and enjoyed everyday of Christmas shopping.

I'm with Ruthie--not even if the stuff were free would I go out that day! Not even if htey were paying me, as a matter of fact.

I took advantage of the day to schedule the plumber and range repair guy to come out. I think my day will be much more productive that way--LOL!

DH just got out of the hospital today from total left shoulder replacement. We will be staying home tomorrow
(Thanksgiving) and Friday also. I didn't expect him to
get out until after Thanksgiving so I have no special dinner planned (just glad he's home!)

I love the crowds too and just the excitement I think I went one year but nothing on sale interested me the same feeling this year I'm happy others get bargains!!

I have a tradition with several friends. On Black Friday we go to an area in town that has some shopping but no crowds. We do lunch in a quiet cafe and then go to the movies. That's as black as it gets here.

I would like to go to Joann Fabrics, don't know if I will get to or not. That is the only place I think I would like to go. I would go other places if I felt better.

I can stay home and slam my fingers in the car door and have more fun. I can buy things online at comparable prices or watch for clearance and get better deals. Won't even consider standing in lines in sub-zero (F) windchills to try to get one of the "10 per store" "bargains".

{{!gwi}}Thinking about going to the fish house parade and lighting of the luminaries but again, I don't want to be out in the cold that long. Stiffen up too easily. I think I'll stay home and eat, drink and be merry. Decorate the tree? Bake something? Snooze? Watch TV? Surf?

I can watch the news days later to see how many people were trampled to death. Greed does things to people.
