Turnips and Rutabaga and Parsnips!

I enjoyed seeing all the way that people cook turnips (in Cheryl's 'How do you cook fresh turnips' post) and thought it might be fun to get together some rutabaga and parsnip recipes as well. They are veggies that I kind of feel fall into the same category as turnips.

Rutabaga - Having been married to one husband who grew up on the Iron Range in Minnesota and one who grew up in Copper country on the Michigan Keweenaw peninsula, I've got to say they are just great cooked in pasties! I just kind of throw mine together, using tender cooked beef steak or roast (cut into small pieces), diced potatoes, rutabaga, and onion flavored with garlic and onion powder and seasoned salt, wrapped in a refrigerated pre-made pie crust (I hate making pie crust and buy it pre-made). Bake and eat. Delicious!

I also like rutabaga diced in soup.

Parsnips. I haven't had them for years, but my mom always used to par-boil them, cool, then slice lenthwise and fry the slices in butter. I absolutely loved them, and am going to have to make some (now that I've thought of it) if I can find them in the grocery store.

I had an uncle who also used to use diced parsnip in veggie soup and that was really good too.

How do you cook them?
