What a long day!

We got to the hospital at 1:00 and they didn't take my husband in until 6:30 last night for his surgery! The doctor was assisting another Dr with the same implant on a woman before DH's procedure. Her's took about 3 hours longer than is typical for this surgery. I asked the Dr why and should I be worried??? They had complications with hers because she was about 150 lbs overweight and it was harder to get the needles to go through to the spine he said. He assured me it would be easier on my husband. Even though he's fluffy he didn't have a lot of fat to go through he said. He said it would be a 3 hour ordeal and it was exactly that. We got home at about midnight last night....such a long draining day. He was crying in a lot of pain when I got to go in and see him. He was not talking about it much and I thought he seemed strange. He said he was trying not to think about it and then start crying. I was really worried. He finally told me that during the prceedure they'd bring him in and out of sleep to ask him questions as they did in the trial one, but he didn't remember it back then. This time when they brought him around he was wide awake and felt everything! He said the pain was so intense he was crying like a baby on the table. He could feel the wires going up his back and he said the pain was unbearable and there was nothing he could do. The doctor finally had him knocked out cold to finish it. I felt so bad for him. He said it was like a nightmare and he was being tortured. They gave him so much stuff to relax him before he went in and really nothing was working. He's been on heavy meds for pain for so long that not a lot works on him. it was a horrible ordeal for him this time, but the doctor said the implant itself went in fine and he should start feeling better in a few days. I hope so...he hurts so bad right now. It's going to be a rough few days....pray for US!

That sounds horrible. Special thoughts and prayers are on the way that he will have a speedy and complete recovery, as painless as possible. Hugs!

I have never seen a list of day-length preferences of plants, but if I were looking for one I'd try the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or maybe good old Arnold Arboretum's library. The day length characteristic is really interesting, though; even if we don't have as much heat and strong sun as other regions, we DO have the same day length as elsewhere at this latitude. Do you think that in plants that are sensitive to day length, the strength of the sun might be a completely different characteristic, or are you saying that you think they're linked? I think some plants just need more sun and heat than we normally get - like my favorite Salvia, S. leucantha, the Mexican bush sage. One more thing - although I don't have much luck with hardy Delphinium (I won't dignify them by calling them perennials) the annual larkspur (which IS a Delphinium) does just fine here. So, I don't think Delphinium's known failure to grow in these parts necessarily has anything to do with day length. It may be the case with some other plants, of course.

Having a day to "accomplish nothing" can be quite an accomplishment! Enjoy your day. I've been flat-on-my-back (or rather, upright-in-the-recliner, gasping-for-breath) sick since Feb. 12. Today is the first day I've felt like there is hope! I was actually hungry; my ribs are not hurting so much, and I can breath. Life is good. Three bouts of antibiotics, some steroids, which I hate to take, and various breathing aids have had very little effect on this terrible bug until now. I'm accomplishing nothing, either; except checking our the KT and watching the birds at the feeders.

Oh Gosh!
My heart goes out to you and your DH.
When I saw my big tough DH cry when he was sick,it tore the heart right out of me.I knew he had to be hurting real bad.
It's so hard to see someone we love go through something like this.

His crying is what worried me. That was not like him at all. It was traumatizing to be awake during the surgery and feel everything going on. I hear about it from other people but you never expect to have it happen to you. The look on his face was like I saw many years ago when he was having flashbacks of vietnam.....really scary to see again. I was scared for him and not knowing why was even worse. After he told me what happened I understood it a little better. He was worried about facing all the people in the room too because he said he felt like such a fool to be crying like that. I told him they have most likely seen it before and that he was rightfully entitled to cry like that, being in so much pain. He was embarrassed too.....the nurse was so nice about it...told him you always leave your dignity at the door when you enter a hosptial...and that they have in fact seen it all. She made him smile which I was relieved to see. She gave him alot of pain meds too....he liked her :O)

I'm so sorry that this was such an horrible ordeal for him. I hope the implant does the job and he will be pain free for a very long time.

What a horrible thing for your poor husband to go through!!! You both have my prayers flying high for you!! God love your dear husband...I hope his pain eases off and he can go walking with you again soon.

I can feel for your husband. With my first c-section, I had a huge combination of pain meds and somehow when they did the c-section, I felt everything and I could swear that I kept telling them that I could feel everything and that it hurt. But my DH and Doctor said that I didn't say anything at all. It is a terrible thing and afterward you remember and think about it. They tried to tell me that I was imagining or dreaming everything. When I had Hayden and Hudson, I had the best anisthesiologist and he told me that one of the meds can make your mind relax and make you not able to communicate when you feel pain. Sending healing thoughts and prayers your and your Dh's way.

How horrible! I hope this procedure gives him the relief he is looking for especially after all he went through. I'm surprised they sent him home so soon. Hope he feels better soon.

My heart goes out to you and your hubby, lots of prayers too. I had brain surgery 10 years ago to remove a tumor and I was woken up during the procedure in order to test different brain/nerve functions. It was the scariest time of my life and one I will never forget.

Bless that nurse!!! What a horrible ordeal for him. I've read about that happening and I can't even wrap my mind around the possibility of being on the table and feeling everything. I sure hope the darned thing can control his pain after going through all that.

Truer words were never spoken. Nurses and doctors as well as many other hospital staff (phlebotomists, x-ray techs, etc.) have seen and heard more than most folks can imagine...

Oh my gosh! How horrible! I can't even begin to imagine how miserable that was for your DH! :( I am so so glad that it is over with now, and you are both on the road to recovery. I was so happy to see that you had posted, I have been wondering a lot about how you and your DH have been. Please continue to give updates.
