Quite good, actually. I know first hand how it feels to be betrayed by someone not keeping a very important secret. It is not a good feeling, because the person was such a good friend to me and I could never look at her again with trust. That friendship withered in a hurry.

I can keep a secret, hold a confidence. Even when I was a child. Kids new that about me, and confided things in me that made my hair stand on end.... even ones who weren't my friends would come to me to unload. Somehow they knew the confidence would be kept.

My adult step kids confide/unload on me now. Its a given that I won't even tell their parents.

It must be a rare trait though.

I just wish I had someone .... like me.. who could do that for me.

Best way to keep a secret, is not telling it.

I also recognize when people "share" something that they *want* me to spill for them... as in use me as a mouth piece. And I don't go there.

I didn't use to be very good at it...as I get older I think I am much more aware of what I say or repeat.

Recently in our relativley small town, it was discovered a much loved and respected pastor was having an affair. His wife, parents, siblings and children are very active in all sorts of community happenings.
I had heard from my sister (a member at that church) and it was at least 3 weeks before any of us at work talked about it. I was so proud of my co-workers! We all knew about and, I know it sounds corny to be so proud of them, but they are such a stand-up group of people.
Even then, not much was said...it was mostly about how vulnerable we all are.

Secrets are often toxic. I don't want to hear any.

I can keep a secret if it is prefaced as a secret. If it harmful to someone, I probably won't. It most likely will affect my relationship with someone.

Yep. I'm sitting on one now and I'm about to burst. It's a good one! But the woman sitting with us when friend asked us to keep mum until it's "official" can't, so I'm pretty sure everyone in town knows it already.

Isn't that funny. I have found my husband just hurries off to blabber everything. And, he was a top "secret-keeper" while in the military. Never slipped classified stuff around anywhere, even for the years required after retirement. Now days, they are "good ole boy" stories that are sort of fun to hear (but I imagine he has not told ALL he knows)

I believe that I am only "fair" about keeping secrets. Would not tell hurtful stuff, but sometimes "it is the right thing to do", and I would rather not know a secret that would put me in a situation like that..

I can keep a secret. BUT you have to tell me to NOT tell my husband. lol I guess that's not keeping one, huh? If I remember, I will ask if it is okay to tell hubby, if they say no, I will keep it all to my self.

Oh...you bet I can! I pride myself on it... but don't trust anyone else to...not even my hubby.

I was always very good about keeping confidences, never was one to gossip,ect. Except the time my best friend, about three years ago now, had a face lift. She swore me to secrecy and I did fine - until everyone was gushing over how young she still looked at her age. She's four years older than me, and I was the one that everyone said looked far younger than my years. Resentment built up in me until one day I confided her secret to my than SO. He didn't believe me! So I told my other best friend. She did, but after that I felt so guilty whenever I saw the one who had had surgery. ugh. To this day, I don't know if she ever found out I told or not.

Don't even bother to tell me. lol. And don't leave it up to me to decide that it's a secret.

Depends on the secret. From DH..NEVER. Some things told to me don't need to be told to others, so I don't. I kept secrets too long when younger, the BAD kind. SO I now try to keep the good ones if necessary for the friend.

I think it is inbred into me, if it is a secret I won't repeat it. In fact I usually don't repeat things. I'm a personal assistant, it's part of my job. And as a travel agent that was also vital, we didn't say a word about travel plans, ever.

The mere fact that you shared your secret with someone else proves you cannot keep a secret,,,so by what right do you expect someone else to keep it?

When I was in the Air Force I was the chief warehouseman for the munitions storage area (bomb dump) on an active B-52 bomber base and as such I was one of only two ppl on the entire base who actually knew how many and what type of bombs and special weapons(nukes) we had at any given time.

Recently a friend of mine showed me an article that was printed in a magazine telling what was on that base before it closed, and he asked me if the facts in the article were true? I told him that even though most of the records have now been declassified and put in the public domain, that article is based upon the authors conjectures of the records and I am not at liberty to confirm whether or not his findings are correct.

Believe me, I have both military and personal secrets that will go to my grave with me..so don't even ask..
