Investing in stocks and putting some away isn't practical? I don't even think of it as spending.

I'd hire someone to fill in my pool. Although that's practical, too. I guess I find it hard to conceive of spending frivolously.

Okay, $2,500 would cover a couple of very nice lenses for my camera.

I would fly to Albuquerque and spend some time with the grand kids, and then to Germany and spend some time with my sis and my brother.

There is no problem spending the rest of the money there... :)

I would buy LOTs of art supplies, music of all my favorite artists, all the movies I love to watch, update a few things in the house but I would put most of it on the side for my bathroom remodel.

I have a similar situation. IRS auditted us and Wednesday they deposited $3066.98 in our checking account. We're giving $500 each to our two daiughters for Christmas (last year we gave $100 each), bought a vacuum online for another $200, the remainder is going in savings. I don't "have" to spend it. We have a big town tax (around $6000) due in January, this will help.

Do some painting and updating in the house (is that considered practical?).

I would go shopping (online) like mad. With 4 kiddos growing like weeds and Christmas coming I would love to spoil my kids.

I'd be heading as fast as I could to all of the craft stores and to Staples, stocking up on supplies, and to the post office for lots of forever stamps.

I would get on a plane to Paris and take myself out to dinner at Alain Ducasse and stay over night at the Ritz. Poof gone just lie that but what a memory.

I would probably put it towards a new car for myself as my current one is almost 10 years old. I have everything else I need right now other than saving for a house but I'm not ready to buy that yet!

Maybe I'm reading mp's question wrong but I think she said you can't spend on family, you had to spend all of it and it couldn't be on something practical. I don't see where she says you have to spend it on yourself. Of course that could have been her intention and we all assumed so. So, anything spent on practical things or family would still be out of bounds.

I'm thankful that I have all my needs and most of my wants met. So much so that I would give it to someone else who could use it for something they don't find practical. (she doesn't say I can't spend it on someone else outside the family)

I would have a hard time. I'm hardwired to spend it on family or something practical. $2500 isn't enough for me to have fun like buying a really cool art piece I want. We've spent way more than that per person this year on vacations.

Saving and making money is more of a game to me. Spending it to make it grow would be fun. Unfortunately, I don't think $2500 is going to cut it for what I'd like to do. I need at least $30,000. I'd like to buy one of these little dumps around here and fix it up cute to rent.

I'm with Monica PA as well. I just don't believe in frivolous spending....It's a concept that is foreign to me. We retired and live a very comfortable life that hasn't changed much since the day when we worked but that is due to not spending frivolous. If I needed something, or even wanted something, I would buy it and stash the rest.

I would buy my niece a computer, a camera and pay for internet until the last of the money was gone.

Ok, if I had to get rid of it all on myself I would save it and fly to Spain next summer.

There are so many people in FEMA trailers and on the base (also flood victims that are military and live in town, and many of the spouses work at the local medical clinic/hospitals) that cannot get to their personal items for the holidays, I would take the kids shopping to buy something special for their families.

Sorry I said I'd give some to family members and save the rest.

Ok, this probably doesn't count either, but I'd use it to have my house cleaned for as long as the money holds out. Practical, yes, but it would make me very happy also. I love walking into a clean house.

I might try to replace the 18K gold earrings that were stolen a few years ago. I wouldn't let the current inflated price of gold deter me -- as it HAS! LOL

More likely: I'd use it to sweeten the amount we give to charities at this time of year.

Probably give it to (quite likely mainly overseas) charity/-ies.

I would get new windows for my house and buy a laptop computer. If anything was left over I would have Merry Maids clean my house monthly until the money ran out.

I'm a little confused by the question too but if I had to "spend" it all on something frivolous for myself I'd probably get a big old spa gift certificate... and use it to get massages, waxings, pedicures, etc... until the money runs out!

I wouldn't mind a nice vacation but without my family (I took it you couldn't use any of the money for them to go), I don't think I'd want to go that route.

$2500 won't take you to europe - well, you can get there, but not the return flight.
When you think of it...it's not a whole lot of money...not that much more than a monthly SS check.

Monica, there are actually lots of deals out there. I just checked a roundtrip flight from Austin to Paris - including all fees and taxes: $865, London was $845. Flying out of DFW was surprisingly, not much cheaper, but well under 2500.

Chi, go for the Lasik. It's the best thing I've ever done for myself. More insurances are paying more for it now.
