I signed up for the internet tonight and will be online Tuesday. Woo Hoooo!

I was going to wait awhile to get the computer hooked up to the internet until I could find the cheapest dial up. My brother stopped over the other day and I was asking him about dial up and he told me to forget about getting it. He said I put up with Webtv long enough and needed to move into the future. LOL He said I needed to forget dial up and go with Bell and get high speed.

My phone bill is $77 a month so I really coudn't afford to have an internet charge tacked onto that. Even getting dial up was pushing my budget limits. When I told Paul I couldn't afford to get DSL let alone dial up he said he would pay the monthly fee for me and would give me the money at the end of the month when he gives me his rent money. I told him I didn' want him doing that but he said he wanted to do it. Okaaay.

Paul called me a few times and asked me if I signed up for the internet yet and I said not yet. So tonight when I was shopping at the small mall I stopped in at the Bell Store and talked to the young clerk behind the counter. I told him I wanted to reduce the charges on my telephone and get DSL for less than what I am paying for my telephone now. I told him the only thing I wanted on my phone was Call Answer and Call Display and the Wire Care and he looked at some bundles and said I can get the internet and the phone for less than what I am paying now. He said he could take care of the internet portion and sign me up tonight and then told me to call Bell Customer Service on Monday and get the cheaper phone bundle and he said I would also get a $5 discount a month. I was thrilled. Feels like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I hated paying that much for my phone service.

So I signed up for something called Extra Performance. I didn't have to sign a contract either.I told him I didn't want to have a contract because I didn't really know if my used computer would last very long. I was told with the Extra Performance I would be able to download videos and lots of music without having to pay extra for bandwidth like I might have to do if I got the next plan down. He then asked me if I wanted a wireless network connection in my house and I could move my computer from room to room. I told him I didn't have a laptop but he said I might have one in the future and he recommended the wireless. He also said I wouldn't be sharing the iternet with others in th neigbourhood. Whatever that means?

On Tuesday if I can get someone to install everything for me I will be up and running and hopefully be able to post pictures here like you all do.

I am worried though because I don't have a Security Package yet. I know I can download a free one. I just don't know which one is the best. I know about running spyware scans, etc. I was safe with Webtv because I didn't have to worry about my system being infected. I am still going to keep my Webtv for emails, etc. I don't know anything about the computer yet except to turn it on. I've been playing a Scrabble game I bought. I have the computer in the kitchen and can't sit in front of it long because I haven't the proper chair. I loaned my friend a new computer chair years ago and I am asked her tonight if I could get it back. She only uses it when I come over and we sit together at her computer. I don't like the idea of having a computer chair in m kitchen because it doesn't fit in with the decor. LOLOL

I called Paul when I got home to tell him I signed up for the Internet and he said that was good. I told him the cost and he said "no worries"

Now I can look for recipes online and instead of writing it down or having to go back and forth to the living room to read the recipe while I am making something now I will have the recipe onscreen in the kitchen with me.

I can't wait! I may never get any housework done now. What have I done! LOLOL

Anne you are going to be so thrilled once you get set up and started and it sounds like things are really working out for you. We have a great computer Forum here at Garden Web and they will be happy to steer you in the right direction for most anything you want. Welcome!!

Hey, I remember when I was first excited to use the good mix too...You would be amazed at how awesome trees do in the stuff you are so anxiously waiting to use..By the way, great idea about soaking the bark! It is even so clean looking and just beautiful to match that beautiful tree.. I wonder about that mix it came in..It looks like it is ready to break down fast already..Hard to really tell..It looks like it would be good draining for one season more. Let me ask you this..This is your homework. Call that place tomorrow and ask them specific questions about the care your tree just came from and what kind of mix they use. Here is what I would ask them to help give your tree a head start and to mimick as close as they did. 1. What exactly is in their mix? 2. How long has the tree been in that same pot? 3. What kind of warmth did it recieve? 4. How much sunlight did they get? 5. Were they grown outside or in a controlled environment, like a greenhouse? 6.Did they use any type of acidifyer product? 7. What was teh fertilizer they used? By the way, what Zone do you live in? Where in the world? Will you have to winter it inside or will you be able to expose it to full sun all winter long? Hi Tilly, sorry not to get back to you earlier. The retusa came from Ebay off a seller called epric_stichting. They also have an online site at Epric.org - this link should send you directly to where they're selling cuttings of Hoya retusa. A recommended seller, I've been drooling over his baskets of Hoya picta and Hoya pauciflora but am still trying to decide where I would put them and whether I can really justify shelling out nearly Â£30 for them! I would also recommend Paul Shirley Succulents as another good place to buy Hoyas. Of course, I would caution against buying hoyas at this time of year due to the cold, it would be better to wait until Spring when it's warmer (ha!) to get your plants... Hope that helps, Hills

So it was stable, until it wasn't stable, for the reason I just gave. I win. LOL That stealthy lubadub seems to have gone *poof*, I'd consult with him before even conceding Love-15 since he is more fun than me LOL! I think in order to judge the merits of "Big Zac F1" as a cultivar; we need to compare opinions on what constitutes a cultivar. It can be subjective and perhaps with heirlooms much more so, but now we are asking about traits that result from inbred parent lines. That the seeds were an F1 cross certainly is reasonable acknowledgment. However, anecdotal reports of “Minnie’s friends” are not sufficient proof IMO, that Big Zac F1 ever was a hybrid cultivar. To know that for sure, IMHO, we would have to have a record of the breeding of both parents to form stable inbred parent lines such that when crossed they always gave a vigorous seed and always had the same combination of characteristics to clearly define the seed plant characteristics every time in terms of its characteristics not limited to consistent fused blossoming and vigor. Porterhouse is probably a good example of a hybrid in this sense. If you mean to say that our heronie Ms. Zaccaria worked on both parent lines and Big Zac F1 was not drifting this or that way then I'll readily concede in straight sets. I vaguely recall as an armchair blabbing analyst who was off somewhere in the tropical jungles when this whole thing went down, a somewhat different version: That she simply crossed two heirlooms and used that as her F1 and little by little improved it, which I assume was via the parent lines. I would need more than a a few friends waving their arms calling this a quality F1 hybrid that always performed "the same" There is a limit to how much "in-variety genetic diversity" there can be, and everything may not be recognized as a cull when this is done in a home garden. At some point you need to say the genetic diversity did not justify calling it a stable F1 hybrid, and you are just dealing with a cross. Dealing with a cross is great, but the decision to name a variety is subjective and I'm sure plenty of varieties have been named that had parents that later were show not to breed true. The scandal of losing a parent to me is highly suspicious and the loss is hearsay which may or may not be relevant or true. To be honest, after watching the passion with which giant tomato growers behold their seeds like Smeagol's "My Precious", given the nature of the egos in the competition, my only conclusion is that Big Zac F1 was simply a cross between two heirloom lines which had a higher frequency of expression of fused blossoms. I wonder if it is more accurate that Ms. Zaccaria discovered and should be credited with a higher frequency of fused blossoms, possibly a mutation, possibly not, which was still quite variable and requires significant resources to achieve the heterosis and uniformity a quality hybrid needs to give. New breeding has probably advanced BZ (OP) well beyond the F1 from what we are seeing, and they still do not consider it stable (Unless the F* from Monsieur Boudyo has reached that point for a single specific trait). I may have different thinking, since I also believe if the mutation is fixed and a consistent tomato producing multiple fruits is bred, that the new stable cultivar should be the beginning of as new subspecies at minimum recognized as different as broccoli is from cauliflower. Perhaps when my great heirloom book arrives in the Male (smile), I’ll have a better understanding of hybrids ;-), but these are my thoughts as all-wet as they might be. PC who really wants to ask a question about the systemic or not characteristics of initial Leaf Mold (whimper, frown) when I get up the guts to start another thread. and also subscribes to the academy of "it isn't how big it is but how well it eats" though still finding this fascinating in other people's gardens. I love buying scratch tickets and I would love to buy a little 2-bdrm bungalow. I used to crave those huge houses but now I realize that it's just a bunch of wasted space that you're heating and cooling when you're in 1 little room over here and a massive empty house is over there. To me small houses aren't easier to keep clean because every spot is being used, and I'm bad, if there's a flat surface, there's something on it. My table has papers, recipes, a couple of paperbacks. My couch has my little book that I keep track of my tv shows, and a jigsaw puzzle that I'm debating on setting up. Anyway, I'd love the basement, that would make a huge difference for me, having my recycling bins out of sight plus some extra boxes etc that are in my 3rd bedroom. Our Ontario summers are horrid. Humidity galore. A group from Alabama were here partaking in our Ribfest and they said the temperature was a bit cooler but they couldn't stand the humidity. I have a portable a/c hooked up in the patio door, it helps. We lived here for 4 years without needing a/c because we're on the top floor of a duplex and windows all around, so there's pretty much always a breeze. But summers are hotter, with several days in a row of 30C temperatures whereas we used to get just a few interspersed throughout the summer. Enjoy your home and air conditioning!

That is something you might want to address before even getting 'on line' with it.
You said it was used, so I'm thinking it might already have an antivirus program installed on it. I would search 'Programs' to try and find out.

Having 2 antivirus programs activated at the same time, can cause major problems, something you can likely avoid.
If there is already one on it, and it is free, you might just need to get the updates which are also free.

AVG FREE is a well like antivirus often recommended at Computer Help.

I'm so excited for you getting a computer and high speed. You are going to love it!

I recently signed up for free virus protection...it is Avast...I've been satisfied with it...

It updates nearly everyday .

When my DS gave me a computer for Christmas, I cried after he left. I so loved my WEB TV, but after I got used to the pc, I have learned so much. Would not have web tv back, ever.

I have dialup, it's slow, but then it's for me and I'm happy with it. Have AOL for $11.95 a month.

My virus protection is Trend and it is really good!

I have been visiting the Computer Forum for years even though I didn't have a computer. I have passed along a wealth of information I have learned there to friends and family. I keep telling them to join so they can ask questions themselves but they seem reluctant. I told them they would save time and money by reading what is there.

Accessing the Computer Forum is another reason I am keeping my Webtv connection. This way when my computer goes down I can still ask questions.

I think I am going to ask my boss from the Election to come over and check out the computer and maybe hook up the internet hardware for me. He was an exec at IBM and took an early retirement so he knows all about computers.

Here comes my friend with my computer chair. I am going out to do some shopping for my sister Lizzie. She called me last night and said she has been very sick for a month and hasn't been working. This is my sister who is a nurse and lived in Saudi Arabia and was treated for Stage 4 double breast cancer. I am worried but will think positive. Doctors are doing a lot of tests.

I didn't want to post about my Sister separately and ask for good thoughts because my sister would not like that. I know the power of the KT so I am going to ask anyways. Thanks

Glenda, my brother says once I get on the internet with the computer I will want to say goodbye to my little black box. I'm not to sure - I'll wait awhile plus I have to get some use out of the new keyboard I just got for my birthday. We paid more for the new keyboard with shipping costs and UPS costs than I did for my Webtv when it was new. LOL

Maybe I will pass my Webtv along to my sister Marjorie. She pays for the service for me anyways in lieu of the newspaper subscription she gave to me for Christmas a few years ago. I told her she could pay the webtv instead of the paper and it would be cheaper than the newspaper. LOL She wanted to get a laptop but I know my sister and she can't even operate her VCR let alone know how to even turn on a computer. Webtv would be easy for her to learn.

You can change your AOL to Free now. Most everyone has and uses free AOL DS takes care of mine so I don't worry about it.

Anne I hope you get your sister into using the WebTV it is a start. None of my school buddies from my past even have a computer hence a note once a year by snail mail we could be having such good fun.

I had a friend come over to put the internet hardware on my computer last night so I would be ready for Tuesday but we had a little setback. The cable that goes from the modem into the CPU doesn't fit because it is a bit too wide.

I called the Bell store today where I picked up the stuff and the female clerk said the cable should fit. When I told her it didn't fit she seemed not to believe me. She told me it fits all computers. LOL Well it didn't fit into mine. She then said she would look around the shop for a USB cord - she said I could use that instead but they didn't have one. My friend said the clerk is crazy and does not know what she is talking about. I don't know either way. LOL So I guess I will call Bell tomorrow and see if they can send me one or if they can solve the problem.

Also we moved the refrigerator to get at my phone jack and we put the filter on and plugged in the cord for the modem. I get up this morning and I couldn't get a dial tone with my cordless phone which is plugged into that jack. I pulled off everything and put the jack back the way it was - with only my phone and I still don't get a dial tone. I can use the phone in my living room and my Webtv so I don't know what is up with that either.

My friend showed me a bunch of stuff on the computer and showed me how to play a CD. She said I have a really expensive set of speakers and a woofer? and the music sounds better than what comes out of my CD player. LOL I changed the screen saver too.

I have so much to learn.

I have a suggestion that works for me when I do it.

When DS shows me how to do something on the computer or phone etc I write down the How to step by step. I find that way I can follow along without having to remember each thing or call him because I forgot.

I've been using AVG for quite a long time, and happy with it.

Some say that we need a firewall as well as anti-virus service and I don't think that such is part of AVG free service, as I understand that it only stops viruses, trojan horses, etc.

LOL Ed, I don't even really know what a Firewall is but i have heard of it.

My friend came over again tonight and said my phone jack needs to be replaced, the wires were loose which is why I wasn't getting a dial tone. I guess when we moved the fridge back in, we hit the jack.

Donna checked the back of the computer again and said the computer doesn't seem to to have an ethernet (sp) port to plug the modem in.

Glad to see you are getting DSL. We have DSL in Ottawa - you need special phonejack adapters that filter the phone line for you since it is now carrying DSL. The jack plugs into the outlet and you plug your phone into the jack (it has a small converter on it about the size of a bic lighter). I don't know how your WebTV is hooked up but if there is a telephone line running into your box, then that line also requires a converter jack.

I hope this helps you to know what to ask for. I think we got ours from Bell when we got our modem package. Call customer service and ask if they supply them or where you can get them.

Hey, Anne!!!

I saw you signed in on Saturday, but I haven't had time to post. Had some other stuff going on and finally got that taken care of.

You are going to enjoy your PC so much when you get all the kinks worked out. Do go to CompHelp with your Web TV and tell them about your computer, all the stats that you know, such as make, age, operating system, etc., and ask what you should do first and which security programs are best for you. The bad guys can get in the minute you hit the Internet, so you need those securities before that happens.

You are right about the Whole New World! There is no end to what you can do with a PC. And, yes, they can make you want to tear your hair out sometimes, too. Just remember: Google is your friend!

Cool news...you signed up and I discontinued our service LOL if we got to stay home I would keep it just can't find a real good reason to pay 70 a month for me and the kids to get to use it for 2 weeks out of the month...Stacy
