Salvation Army Prizes

My son and his girlfriend enrolled in a pie baking class last week. The "teacher" sets aside filling per order of apple or pumpkin pies, and mixes the dough for them ahead of time. They roll out the dough, fill the pie, decorate the pie with dough cut out leaves, etc, and while it bakes, everyone in the class has beer and hors d'ouvres.

Well the prizes for the best decorated pie boxes came from the Salvation Army store. My kids won, but someone had already snagged the chrome penguin decorated ice bucket that they had wanted. Wish I had one of those from decades ago, because I would have given it to them. They froze the apple pie and brought it to Thanksgiving dinner! Shared the pumpkin at a welcome home dinner for the younger brother. Sounded like a lot of fun.

PS. Their prize was an old caraf.

Weeks ahead of the class, held a few days before Thanksgiving, you pay for the class and register for which of the 2 flavors of pie you want. You must bring your own pie plate and mug.

The cook/owner makes up the dough and the fillings ahead of time. She supplies all the tools except for the pie pan. The class is at 11am. You get a ball of chilled dough to roll out, cutters to make leaf shapes to decorate the pie, and ladle the filling you selected into your crust.

As the pies bake, beer is served, people eat appetisers and this year ate chili. Meanwhile, those that want to compete for the best decorated pie boxes draw the decorations on their box as the owner wanders from table to table and declares any that she likes as winners. DSs girlfriend drew such a cute decoration on her cakebox last year in the class that the owner started the contest for this year. So gf was declared a winner this year too, but she was the 2nd winner of the day, and the 1st winner had already selected the penguin chrome ice bucket for herself. So they were sad as they both had hoped to scoop up the ice bucket as their prize.

When I hear about taking truckloads of new stuff to the landfill ... I cry a bit. I live within a couple of miles of a "landfill" (double four-letter word for a "dump" - also a four-letter word, as you may notice). A couple of years ago the local owner of a "landfill" had its capacity licence increased from 9 million to 17 million tons ... and I figured at the time that I knew what'd be coming next, as the City of Toronto, 2.5 million or so, has been taking flack for years for shipping their garbage to a site near Detroit. A year or so ago Toronto bought this dump ... for $220 million. They've been shipping something like 140 semi-s a day over the border, and will soon ship them next door. The site is right beside the freeway from Toronto to Detroit, so I expect them to build a new exit ramp ... right into the dump! Could you spare a tear or two for my predicament? ole joyfilled (usually) P.S. Being frugal (having helped folks who'd left their former lives in just the clothes that they wore, get their lives back together in an area recently visited by war), I hate seeing useful things scrapped. And did so long before the recent furore over the expansion of the local dump. o j

It was back this summer, not recently, but I found a great, great buy on a quilting frame and light for the quilting frame. It was still in the shipping box, and so was the light. The frame had been opened but taped back, but the light had not..I took a chance and hauled it home for 15.00. The sales lady said she was glad to get it out of the store as it had been in there over a year. I frequent that S.A. so don't know why I haven't seen it. Everything was in the box, including set up instructions and a booklet on how to start your quilt. My husband put the quilting frame together for me and I was estatic. They obviously did not know what they had, or people just do not want to quilt anymore. It was a Grace Z44 quilting frame. Yippee for me! Someones trash---my treasure! Many years of pleasure!!

Wow, Jannie--even I would have spotted those! Good finds! A Goodwill recently opened up about 10 miles from me (around here, that's close), but I haven't gone there yet. We have three Salvation Army stores that I like a lot. None smell bad. I donate a lot and shop often. Most of my clothes come from there. This past summer my addiction was silk scarves. I got some beauties. I haven't bought any shoes, though. Several of my friends buy shoes at S.A. all the time, but since shoes can't be washed I haven't been tempted.

I don't usually have much luck finding clothes at our thrift stores. Friday night I stopped by and found a lovely maxi skirt at one store that actually fit. I love maxi skirts, so I was thrilled. Saturday morning, I stopped by another one that I don't usually go to since it's out of the way. I found a beautiful Coldwater Creek jacket. It is styled like a safari jacket, but it is Tencel made to look like denim, so it is very lightweight. Perfect fit! To make it even better, it was $5 and they had a 25% off special, so I got it for $4 incl. tax! Having seen Coldwater Creek's catalogs, I'm sure this jacket was probably $75 or more new. alisande, your skirt is lovely. I would wear with boots and a simple sweater/turtleneck with a long necklace for winter.
