About my trip to Iowa

I am leaving Tuesday afternoon (November 4), and drive to Kansas City. I can spend the night there with my daughters in-laws. Very nice folks!

I will drive to Des Moines on Wednesday (November 5). I don't know yet, where Linda and Sandy and whoever else can get together with me, as I just don't know Des Moines.

I will take a room there, and spend the night. Again, I don't know where yet.

Thursday (November 6) I will drive to Iowa City, to spend a few days with my oldest daughter.

Anyone knowing of a good place to eat in Des Moines, with hopefully a motel nearby, please let me know.

I will get all replies to this post in my email.

My return trip will be much faster, as I most likely drive straight through to get back home. Then after a nights sleep in my own bed, I will continue driving to get to New Mexico, to visit with my younger daughter and her husband. She has a few days off, and hopes to get input on a color scheme for the baby's room. Lori and Doug moved last weekend. They also hope, I can/will help with hanging of the pictures etc.

Sooo, please, if you know of a good place for KT'ers to meet in Des Moines, please speak up.

Moni, I've eaten at the Machine Shed in Urbandale/Des Moines. They say it's family style, but you can also order off the menu. It's like a Cracker Barrel. Good food.
You can do a search for it and get the map. It's right off the I-35, so there's probably motels close too.

Im over in Oklahoma City and completely understand what youre going through. However, water here is a little cheaper but I'm starting to slow down my watering. The yard is baking at 110F in direct sun. Nothing wants to be alive. Not even the driveway. Your giant elephant ears look great though, maybe replace the yard with those? :)

I had been thinking about Doug & wife, too, had been to their place to pick up my Mills Magic and got a tour when his lovely tree peonies were blooming. So I know how high up on the hill they are. So I called him just a bit ago, he said they are fine, the creek has widened a bit but hasn't gotten as high as when they first moved there because the channel has deepened. The water is really flowing fast but hasn't risen to affect any of his plants, just a little water in the basement. It's really bad in parts here, and you've probably seen it on the national news about Cedar Rapids. Many other towns and areas along waterways in eastern Iowa are having serious problems including us. River is expected to crest at Lock and Dam 15 (crosses the river at Davenport and Rock Island at Arsenal Island) early Monday stretching through Tuesday at 21 feet. They are calling for people to fill sandbags, wish I could help, could fill one or two but not be able to lift them, would just be in the way. I live about 3 miles as the crow flies from Doug and am on high ground. On the perennials forum I posted some photos I took yesterday of a huge sinkhole in a street that caved in and high terraces collapsing onto the sidewalk and street 6 blocks from me, detours everywhere so didn't try to get near the flooded areas, except Duck Creek which had receded by the time I got there. I don't remember mudslides here in my lifetime. It's on a thread about how you do your watering, I got too chatty there so had better quit now.

Dubuque is a charming destination in itself where history is everywhere and adorable quaint shops for antiques, crafts, and whatnots. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast that was 100 years young and loved every minute.

*sigh* Living in a newer sub-division, all the top soil here was stripped off before building the house so I don't have the wonderful loam soil that many of you have - which is a huge bummer. But even with my soil being heavily clay, at least it isn't full of rocks and can be amended! After living in So. CA where it didn't rain for 4 months, I have to say my favorite thing about gardening in IA is the rain! Although the drip system I had was convienent, I still love the rain and what it does for my flowers and perrennials. Now, let's pray that we don't have a drought this year (and no floods either!).

I did a search, and came up with a link for it. They are open from 6 a.m - 10 p.m. and are located at:

from what I see, there are several motels in the area. Now I just get to pick one out. :)

Moni, I hate to be a stick-in-the-mud but Machine Shed and Cracker Barrel are about the only two restaurants that don't offer any vegetarian dishes for me. Des Moines has lots of places to eat that serve fish or vegetarian. I am hoping that Sandy's Kalie will jump in this post and suggest a hotel for you and some nearby restaurants.

Linda, since I am headed to my Vegan daughters, I can fully appreciate your desire to eat vegetarian. Please, tell me a different option. It's getting close, and I just need to start lining everything up in Des Moines. I have all other ducks in a row. :)

I don't have reservations yet, but have quotes from all motels in that area. I won't even mind, calling around more, if we end up in a different area of town.

Also, if you or anyone else doesn't want to drive home that night, I could take a double room, and let someone share it with me. But, that person would have to content with not smoking.

Moni, I love your lifestyle. Just wish Vince and I could go some more, Our days are past so will have to enjoy yours.
