What's your favorite thing about gardening in Iowa?

Maybe it's a favorite plant, the weather, the taste of fresh veggies, or perhaps something else... Tell us what makes gardening in Iowa special to you!

My favorite thing about Iowa gardening is the soil. Having seen hard clay, sandy soil, and rocky soil in other parts of the country, I've realized how much I value digging in fertile loam. I could've move from Iowa without taking truckloads of it with me!

I'd have to agree about the soil.

It feels so good on my fingers, and stays loose and workable all summer (if I don't tromp on it). It's a nice color, too.

My two daughters both garden - one in Portland OR and the other in far northern New York, and both of them have soil that's full of stones and gets hard as a rock in late summer. Portland battles summer drought, and New York has a shorter growing season and no depth to the soil at all - rock ledges just below the surface. I'll take Iowa every time!

Living in a newer sub-division, all the top soil here was stripped off before building the house so I don't have the wonderful loam soil that many of you have - which is a huge bummer. But even with my soil being heavily clay, at least it isn't full of rocks and can be amended!

After living in So. CA where it didn't rain for 4 months, I have to say my favorite thing about gardening in IA is the rain! Although the drip system I had was convienent, I still love the rain and what it does for my flowers and perrennials. Now, let's pray that we don't have a drought this year (and no floods either!).

For me it's "Getting the Most from Your Garden, Using Advanced Intensive Gardening Techniques" It's by Dan Wallace, published by Rodale Press. It was written in 1980 and is long out of print but it can be found in used bookstores, Ebay, and such. This book is written so clearly and is a wonderful source of intensive gardening info.

Hi Seil: I'm so sorry that teenagers steal your efforts in roses. I like Roseseek's story of "poisoned melons". An electric fence might be expensive, something cheap would be an official looking printed sign such as: TESTING FIELD FOR SPOROTHRIX FUNGUS - Report any rose prick to emergency room within 24 hours before infection spread. TESTING FIELD FOR ROSE ROSETTE DISEASE - Report any virus transmission to human within 24 hours to CDC (Center for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov) TESTING FIELD FOR ROSE MITE - Any inflammation of being bitten should be sterilized with 90% alcohol, and any swelling and fever should be seen by a physician immediately. *** Seil: I guarantee you such signs should keep teenagers from picking your roses. It's like the true story of a old guy who got sick of teenagers beating up on his garbage can. So he put up a sign, "Please bang on my garbage can exactly 20 times at 7 am, and I'll pay you a dime." After that, no more banging, because it's no longer fun, it's sheer work for teenagers.

CMK, that is interesting about eggplant liking pots. I started planting a salad garden in pots and window boxes on my back deck a few years ago. I didn't really think about eggplant though. I'll have to try it this year. I find that leaf lettuce does very well in window boxes. I also grow baby cukes in pots and let them trail down the deck railings. I've also done peppers and tomatoes in pots. I mix in a few small pots of nicotiana (not near the tomatoes...does that really cause problems?? i've heard they should not be combined) so the hummingbirds come to feed. Woodyoak, how deep are the windowboxes you use to grow carrots? And which carrots do you choose to grow in them? I've been seeing more pictures of large pots in amongst plants in the garden and I think I may try to experiment more with that. Does anyone have pictures of pots fully incorporated into their perennial/shrub borders as a focal point? Also, does everyone in wintry climates bring their pots inside in the winter? Has anyone found a type of pot that does not crack with the freeze/thaw cycles of winter?

How about your favorite garden sprayers?

Diane, I've used Chapin sprayers for years, but left my good one behind when I moved to OK. I made the mistake of buying another one (a tan color) that I found at Lowe's, relying on the Chapin name to make a good sprayer. It was so awful that it was unusable. I finally sent an e-mail off to Chapin. They sent me a replacement head for it and it was the same quality. This time I sent them a hot note and said I'd been using their product on large estates for 25 years, but I would never buy another Chapin brand because the quality was so poor. They turned around and sent me one of the nice 2-gallon blue ones that I was used to, and it works just fine. I've been using it for 2 years with no trouble. I don't know why in the world they make the cheaper ones. They are total junk and are doing nothing but drag the company name way down. I don't even see it advertised on their company page now. Maybe the Pro models are the same thing as what I use, but don't waste your money on "Sprayers Choice" It's not worth carrying it home. Pat

My favorite is each spring seeing what perennials come up after the winter snow and freeze.

I'm with you Linda. I have only lived here 6 years, and I am still so excited in spring to see what returns, and am amazed by how fast things grow here! ('course they HAVE to grow fast....heh)
