Friends Mouse Won't Move Side-Side! Help!

I'm on the phone with a friend and her mouse has stopped working side to side! It'll got up and donw.

Any idea what the problem might be?

What kind is it?

The older ones can get dirty inside where the roller ball is housed. You have to open those up and clean them out from time to time.

If it is a newer one with the light I can't guess what the problem is.

If the newer one with the light gets a hair or something in the little hole where the light comes out on the bottom it will go dolally as well. Turn it sideways so you can see the light without looking into it and check. Remove any hairs or bits with a pair of tweezers.

My inclination would be to define the property edge with a row, or double row of street trees. There is nothing that qualifies as an eyesore needing screening and no projected use of the side yard requires privacy. So why hide a nice view? I'd invite people passing by to look into and admire your yard. Street trees (limbed up so that the view is maintained, of course!) add order and stateliness, mark the property limits, generally dress it up and display your affection for it. How you handled the ground space below the trees would depend on their spacing and shade pattern. It could be grass, groundcover (something easy) or mulch. Because the location is some distance from the house and because you have time, if you wanted, you could use trees that are more unusual, Maclura pomifera for instance. They should look nice, but don't need to reek of high formality unless that's what you want. Where you need privacy for the back yard you could use sizable shrubs placed somewhere near the fence as a hedge or in carefully placed groupings. The end of the house needs a couple of trees to shield some of the blank wall space. They could be shade or flowering trees. They don't need to be jammed up on the house but could be spaced a distance away proportionate to their ultimate size. A few shrubs to fit with the lower level blank space could be worked into the scheme.

Oh, honey. Can't we fix up your SS and my SD and throw them to the curb??? I feel for you, but at least your husband is on your side. I have tried everything in my case and my DH is just burying his head in the sand. W/ us, I was taken advantage of so badly by his son, who lived w/ us for a couple of years at the end of H.S. and for breaks from college. Then, these SDs started crashing in on us during college, always w/ a crowd. Now, this older SD moved in for "3-4" months. It'll be 6 mo. in the end of the month and I'm just sick of it as it's very disruptive to my 3, almost 5, and 7 y.o. boys. Anyway, your situation stinks. Your SS CHOSE to be an adult when it was convenient for him to be an adult, but when it's easier for him to play the "poor son", he reverts back to being a child. I feel for this poor baby he fathered. I actually commend him for wanting to step up and be a father, but he needs to first recognize himself AS AN ADULT! My parents have had issues w/ my brother. My dad is calm all the time, but once just lost it and asked my mother how she'd have felt if he were in his 40's and still totally relying on his parents for food, money, etc. I would simply tell him that you're proud of the hands on father he is trying to be, but that the first step is for his child to respect him. Does he want the child to see him as an overgrown teen? (I have huge issues w/ so many of today's adult men who still view themselves as 16 y.o. boys!) Of course he should be able to see his baby whenever possible, but you and his father don't need to go through that stage again. Say you'd love to extend to them a standing invitation for Sunday dinner - tell him to come over early, let you both play w/ the baby, eat, then he can GO HOME! It's time. He's made adult decisions so it's time to be an adult. And, I'm w/ you - the technicality of being in school is a joke. Moving to the other side of the kitchen, your advice?

Thanks Steph. I am taking a good long break before starting the other side though. But I'd like to have all my ducks in a row before starting, and after waiting 2 months for the patio door with a piece of plywood nailed over the opening, I want to have all the parts here too. Here is a better picture of my drawing. And a drawing of how I'd like to do the two cooktops. I was thinking black granite on the counter and backsplash with the cooktops because the little one is black and the big one has a black background. And then a lighter granite with some white in it on the rest of the counters on both sides. How would that look? I have decided that while it is cheaper to reuse cabinets, it's a lot harder than having some built. Every time I think something would work, I measure the cabinets and they are the wrong size. The one cabinet I really wanted to keep was the big drawer unit, but if I keep it the way it is, I only have four feet as entrance into the kitchen. Maybe that's not a bad thing, as it would be open to the living room behind it, but I don't want a bottle neck there when the table is pulled out. Either that or I can cut the shelf unit off the end like I have in the drawing above and have a 7 foot entrance into the kitchen. So many decisions, and I just don't want to make any more.

The peninsula can't be shortened at all, rather than a whole redo on the plan? You might have to call someone or visit the fridge in the store to find the answer you need. When I was planning placement for mine, I had to call our trusted salesman to measure for me, because the specs didn't include how far back the door needed to open in order to get drawers past the door racks, etc. I don't think the number of degrees it is able to open necessarily helps you know what the minimum space you need beside it.

First thing to do is reboot the system. Could just be memory. If that doesn't work, unplug the mouse and plug it back in, assuming it's a USB mouse. If it's a cordless mouse, charge or replace the batteries. A wipe with a cloth or a finger on the area the light is will clean lint and stuff.

One other thought: Make sure the surface is flat and smooth. I often use the curved arm of the recliner for my "mouse pad" and that can cause issues on occasion. Wouldn't hurt to try a different surface.

It could also be a bad mouse, bad connection or other! If the above don't solve the problem, is the light working? No light means it's not working. Try a different USB port (again assuming it's USB) and even wipe off the plug if there's any grime on it. Post back with results OK? Good luck.

Hers is the old kind with the ball. I don't know if she ever got it working last ight or not. It was late and we were both ready to head to bed. I think she plans on going to get another one today! Don't know what she'll do if that doesn't fix the problem!! lol

Wow, still a ball type... then the ball and the innards could need cleaning. Or just plain replace the mouse. But I'd guess there's hair wrapped around the rollers inside. Not tough to clean but just be careful about it. Or update it to an optical mouse.

I have the old kind and it needs cleaning often to keep it rolling smoothly.
I use a little alcohol on a cotton swab and some sharp pointed tweezers to clean off the fuzzy stuff.
Hope she got it working OK.

Old style mice with the ball have two rollers inside: one for up and down and another for side to side. Very likely, the side-to-side roller is jammed or the optical sensor has failed. There is a slotted wheel on the end of each roller and rotation is sensed by optically reading the slots.

Since it is a ball type, it is old and probably worn out. It is adviseable to replace the mouse. I recommend a simple optical mouse connected with a cord (tail). These are more reliable than the remote type. Most mice come with adapters to permit plugging into the standard PS2 port or a USB port. Optical mice will work on a variety of surfaces. However, they work best on surfaces that have a consistent texture or pattern such as a plain mouse pad without graphics. A finely woven cloth works too.

A remote mouse using radio frequency link has more things to go wrong, although those are convenient. These require a receiver to be plugged into your computer and the mouse contains a transmitter and batteries. It should have auto shut off to conserve the batteries, and the batteries will need periodic replacement.

She went yesterday and got a new one. She got an optical w/cord. She's loving it! I've had my optical mouse about 8 years now and never had a problem with it!

The mice around here (and usually there are several to be found in the house in the cool weather of fall) usually run straight ahead, with an occasional detour (especialy in the vicinity of a cat) ...

... but I ain't seen none that run side-to-side, yet.

Are they a special breed, do you figure?

Actually, they don't move straight ahead much, either, after I've caught 'em in a trap.
