Ohh - such a complicated question!!

My and DH's chili - we always collaborate, and it is delicious. We even won a neighborhood award.

But I make many things we serve in a bowl rather than on a plate.

Milk toast

Mother used to toast the bread, pour warm milk over it and put a saucer over it to let the milk soak in.

My sausage bean soup. Haven't had any of it in years. I miss my home cooking.

My Dad's beef stew, it was soooo good, especially the next day.

My grandmother's minestrone soup. She was a fabulous cook!

Gotta say my Shrimp Gumbo rocks!

Dh says chili, I say my mom's blackberry cobbler.

Raspberry Shortcake with real whipped cream. We have this for breakfast frequently. In fact my husband just bought eight boxes of raspberries yesterday as one of our supermarkets was having a sale. "Almost" makes me want to get up in the morning.

Peaches from my own peach trees with vanilla ice cream. Then Strawberries...the same. Nanny

Tripe.

The back story: When I was a child we lived in San Francisco. There was a neighborhood Mexican hole-in -the-wall restaurant that had the best tripe ever. It was not menudo, it was just small strips of tender tripe in a HOT HOT red sauce that my older brother and mom ate over the Mexican rice served with it. I always got the prawns as I didn't like spicy foods yet at the age of 3 or 4.

Well we moved across the bay and at around 5 or 6 I came down with a really bad case of the 2 week measles. I had absolutely no appetite and I refused to eat anything. All I would take was juice.

My brother used to go to the city with our grandfather and they would always bring back a quart or 2 of tripe. In desperation my mother offered me a taste thinking maybe the spiciness would m give an appetite. I loved it then and continued to love it from that day on.

Sadly the place closed and I have never been able to find tripe made that way since. Close but not like that little place did.

To this day I can't stand bland warm foods like soup etc. when I'm sick I just want very hot and spicy or very very cold, no in-between.

Ny shrimp gumbo, which is made few and far between times since I don't cook much. Also, my mother's strawberry shortcake w/ homemade shortbread--I wish I had that recipe. The bread pudding at the Horseshoe Casino in Shreveport. Yummo (in the words of Rachel Ray.)

I don't think I can pare it down to just one thing... Lots of wonderful home made soups or maybe slow cooked peas or beans with ham, or some smokey meat.... All are the best thing I ever ate in a bowl.... at the moemnt I am indulging in it.. lol

Then going inside, washed them, put in a bowl, mash with sugar, and pour milk and indulge!

I think it would be out chili, which we're having for lunch today. DH usually starts it, then I add the seasonings.

I don't think I've very eaten anything from a bowl that wasn't good. But, like Kat, my first thought was tapioca.

Silver Dollar City (a theme park in Branson, MO) has these things called Skillet Bowls... it is potatoes, vegetables and different meats all cooked in a huge outdoor skillet. That alone is almost worth the price of admission.

My mother used to make the most delicious Ambrosia. All I can remember is vanilla pudding, pineapple and maraschino cherries. Haven't eaten it since I was a kid. Think I'll go hunt for an Internet recipe.

Home made peach ice cream on a hot summer night in the San Joaquin valley. Fresh cream and fresh peaches from my cousin's farm. Oh, my.....what a great memory.

carol, me, too...we had an electric crank, but still had to do the salt and ice (not like the new machines) and the peaches were fresh, not canned. makes a huge difference doesn't it? and we used real heavy cream, eggs, milk, cooked custard...

we did the same recipe using mango, too...

Oh my, there are so many! My mother's made-from-scratch vegetable beef soup, her chicken and dumplings, and banana pudding. I sure do miss my mother. Then there's homemade ice cream (any flavor, I like 'em all). I'm a sucker for sweets of all kinds, bowl or no bowl.

i forgot one thing..don't know if it was because i'd just had a baby, or it was so comforting...but the hospital served a hot cereal, called wheat hearts...found it in the san diego stores, but can't get it here in mi...sigh...

Chicken and dumplings, which I make fairly often, and bread pudding which I am going to make this afternoon.

Yikes it is hard to narrow it down because I love the "bowl" type meals. I will say that there is no one on the face of the earth that likes beans better than I do so it would probably be a bowl of pinto's.....lots of bacon fat, onion, garlic etc and cooked to perfection and of course it has to have cornbread .....but with that said..

closest thing to heaven would be ...ta da!

I'll second the pea soup with ham, made from the ham bone! Also beef stew, made in the pressure cooker, with baking powder dumplings on top. Not to forget onion soup with a float of cheese toast. Or, how about a big dish of pasta with tomato basil sauce and freshly shaved Romano cheese?

White chicken chili. Love, love, love it.

It's a toss up:

Bigbabys seafood gumbo or Indian rice pudding.

2. Home cured ham with navy beans - slow cooked all afternoon.

4. Banana split made with soft serve ice-cream and chocolate fudge topping plus a sprinkling of crushed nutmeats.

Another memory surfaced: I don't remember what we ate for appetizers or entrees but I will always remember my dessert at Fouqet's in Paris on our honeymoon. It was a dish of *perfect* raspberries with fresh cream. The waiter was amused that I chose that over all their elaborate pastries.
