find your best book bargains? Alot of us use the library but when you do buy, just where do you go? I love Chapters and Indigo but don't usually purchase there. I find most of my materials I purchase at the thrift stores....... lots of you go to Amazon or ebay but I'm a little apprehensive about them. So just as a matter of interest.....where is your favorite book purchasing spot?

I get almost all my books at paperbackswap.com and they cost nothing. If I need the book and can't get it at pbs, I then try to buy on Ebay or Amazon.com.

Paperbackswap.com sounds great! I do get most of my books from Amazon (new or used) or eBay because I am always looking for particular nonfiction titles. The last 2 I ordered (this week both from Amazon) are "A Rip in Heaven" - a true story of a murder which happened in St. Louis and "The Lost Daughters of China: Abandoned Girls, Their Journey to America, and Their Search for a Missing Past" - another true story.

Very pretty caterpillars and what a neat colored lizard. Poor little guy. I found a roadside stand today when I was out test driving a car that the guy said would just die after driving for half hour or so. I saw plants and did a quick u turn, lol. The car never died after driving for an hour and I got fennel, dill, parsley and savory plants for the cats mostly and some organic green beans, cabbage, onions and different lettuces for us. We had a good fresh homemade dinner tonight with all that and some roast pork. Still don't know why the car only quits when the owner drives it, lol. Can't diagnose it if it works fine but I got some good veggies out of the deal. I went to the nursery with the water plants too but it was closed again today. I hope the lady is ok that runs it. I haven't found anyone there in the last 4 days and the plants don't look like they had been watered. I was going to do it for her but the hose was locked up inside. I will take mine with me tomorrow and go by again. She is a widow and runs it by herself and takes in stray cats. I give her donations for cat food and she gives me cuttings and seeds sometimes and I buy plants from there when they have something interesting to help her out. The cats stay inside the building. I hope they are getting fed.

This was another great day for us! We also visited Coenosium Gardens in 2004, this was during the DCS U.S.A. field trip. In that time I wasn't into conifers as much as I'm now, which changed a lot since that time. Bob was like a mentor to me, you know a person to look up to with all his knowledge. I learned myself how to listen and remember the stories about conifers which were told by people like Bob. Now it's time for me to continue telling those stories to people who are interested... All for me left to say: Bob thanks for everything you're doing for the conifer world, I still hope you'll be among us for a long time! Also thanks for having us at your beautiful gardens!

Elba1 : Here is a case of the blind leading the blind: "Someone recently posed a question about xenon under cab lights getting hot. I was at a lighting store today and asked about it. I was told there are "low voltage" lights and "line voltage" lights. It is the line voltage lights that can get pretty hot, whereas the low voltage lights get slightly warm at best. And now we have a batch of people reading it without posting any response that shows any critical thinking. The sales person who you spoke to and who said something offhand will have to backtrack a bit. Watts are the power consumed. All power turns into heat or light. The light produced also creates heat where it lands. How many watts? This is the question. Power consumed by LED and fluorescent is less heat and more light. Power consumed by ALL the others is more heat and less light. To equalize light output, they consume LOTS more Watts. Xenon, Halogen, etc: these are all incandescent. To learn more, and maybe try refuting some of what I have written here, learn about Lumen, which measures light generated. All Watts get turned into Lumen and heat. Xenon consume Watts which produce mostly heat, and some light too. If ANY bulb "only feels warm" it may be because the housing lets air move around it and carry warm air away from it. It's still a waste of money; it's mostly heat, for the Watts consumed. Then, you have to pay more again, for more air conditioning, to remove the heat... So, the housing may help to remove heat. BUT it's not a factor depending on whether it's low voltage or line voltage. The blind lead the blind. Anyone says anything and it gets reported. -- Felix Unger signed FU at the bottom of a note to his Odd Fellow roommate, and the playwright Neil Simon did not see the joke in this when he wrote it. It is a good thing for us to talk about before our election. The U.S. has the same problems. Interesting to me that younger people see themselves as global citizens more and more. Following a discussion with young Londoners online I came away with this- People need work in order to get food, shelter, family stability and for some it provides a framework of social interaction and personal growth. So most people need work of some sort just to meet basic needs. Technology continues to progress, reducing and eliminating jobs. But people still need jobs and find themselves longer training or education to get the jobs that technology has not replaced or have been outsourced to cheaper areas. Not everyone can afford the education or training so there is a lack of available good jobs for most of the population. The question then becomes when there are more people than jobs how will these people provide for themselves? Young people are already delaying starting families. Will there be a large welfare class? This isn't healthy for society. People are happiest when they are contributing to society and meeting their own needs. Do we create work we don't really need to keep people employed? That seems like wasted potential. And who want a meaningless job anyway? Will robots and machines eventually do most of the work so that basic needs are met freeing people to pursue education, science, the arts or other meaningful activities? Will this lead us to a greater love and respect for the planet and all of nature ? I would like to see a peaceful relationship between humans and a golden age of knowledge and cooperation. I know it sounds Sci-Fi but why not? It's great to hear young people talk like this. They feel European and some feel global. The trouble is, we are in the in between years and we can't know the future and haven't decided which path to take yet. This is a tricky time for humanity and I hope we can leave the worst ideas behind in the past instead of trying to carry them forward (terrorists) and be optimistic about our future (young people from Europe and the Americas and Australia, etc.) I mention these groups that's who I was talking with online. Young people all over the world want peace and prosperity.

Our local bookstore sells new and used books--with great bargains on used books.

I love abebooks.com - I have gotten wonderful bargains there.

There is a thrift store in Omaha on 24th street....They always have a lot of books...

I enjoy Nora Roberts books...I always find them there....I recently got a newer one published in 2008 for 1.98.

The goodwill is cheaper on it's paper back books...but I don't always find the ones I want there.

I usually buy from Amazon Marketplace, and sell there too. But now I'm going to check out paperbackswap.com.

I order from Half.com and sometimes from Alibris.com.

I also visit our local library's Friends of the Library bookstores where people donate their books. You can get books for as low as 25Â¢ each and sometimes even free.

Another great way I get books (always free) is through the book group I'm in. It consists of ten women who are veracious readers. We've been meeting every month for over ten years now. Every so often one of us culls our bookshelves and makes up gift bags to give to each of us at the next meeting. These of course do not consist of any books we have already read as a group, but they are always top notch selections.

I've also gotten several wonderful books through people right here at the KT.

I use paperbackswap.com, too. When I do buy books I get them from various sources. If I find a good used book store, I shop while I can. I am occassionally given giftcards to Barnes & Noble, they don't last long with me. ;o) And I do just buy a few a year at full, new, shelf price. When I'm in BJ's Wholesale for groceries, I always check their books. The selection is not always my taste, but sometimes I find something I've been wanting, the price is usually about 25% less than publisher price. I check the sale shelf at the library when I'm there, too. I don't like fluff, so I just have to be willing to take the time to look for a gem amongst the fluff. That's part of the fun, really.

If I want new I get them at Literary Guild. Pretty much my only buying spot up here for new. There I usually (not always tho) can find any specific book I am looking for or a series of books. I can pay as I go. Order online. Their website is literaryguild.com
The thrift store in my town has no books! Well they do but they are ones I am not interested in. Self help books and religious. I have never read a book from our thrift store.
Garage sales are my best bet, but only spring thru fall. No garage sales in the winter.

Usually half.com. Will check out places some of you have mentioned. Also, belong to BOMC2, Used to be Zooba. One book per month required, $9.95, includes shipping. I like the books because they are smaller than regular hardbacks - like oversized paperbacks, but hard covers. Large variety to choose from.
Have looked at used book stores here but their prices are outrageous. Can do better at half.com
Also check at the library books for sale.
Ordered from Amazon once cuz I got free shipping.

I also buy a lot of thrift stores and garage sales.

Another paperbackswap.com user here...very happy with how it works. I did get a book at a thrift store yesterday -- I'd sent out the same book last week, but since it's a popular book, why not post another copy.

Anyway, also the usual places -- thrift stores and used book stores -- DH can spend hours in used book stores. Also Amazon, Borders.com, BN.com.

Our local library was a great source for me until the librarian and I had a falling out. She swore I hadn't returned my books and I knew for a fact that I had. Now I don't go there anymore. Boo hoo

I buy some at thrift stores and some new ones at Barnes and Noble.

There's a bookstore in my town that has a sale a few times a year. They put out plastic tubs of books and mark them 50 cents or a dollar. I bought a lot of cookbooks last time they had a sale.

Budster, I guess I can understand your apprehension about eBay (although I sell books myself on eBay), but why Amazon? Amazon has an excellent reputation. I sell books there, too.

On the rare occasions when I buy a new book (usually nonfiction), it comes from Amazon. I buy a lot of used books there as well. Also eBay occasionally and Half.com occasionally. About once a year I got on a Bookcloseouts.com spree.

The rest of the time I haunt our animal shelter's thrift shop and the public library, which always offers books for sale. Like Stephanie mentioned, I love the hunt.

i shop at target, wal mart, k mart, sam's club, and costco. al offer papaerbacks at 25% off retail price. used to have a used bookstore, but he quit...:(

our one re-vamped w/m has a awesome book dept. they have at least 5 double racks...sams has more sellection than costco...

I have bought quite a bit through the years through Double Day. I ususally get 6 books for 99 cents plus shipping, then I buy the three required, after that I'll cancel. And months later I get a offer to rejoin again.
Amazon is my favorite place to shop, and I never had any trouble.
