I like to talk so I would rather eat with a friend. If I am alone, I usually will get take-out.

I think lunch is no big deal, although it took me years to get to that point. But I don't enjoy dinner/supper out alone. I'd rather pick it up or go to a fast food place.

I was a long haul truck driver for over 10 years and generally I would be away from home from 2 to 5 months per trip. Believe me, I got very accustomed to eating alone be it morning, noon, evening or any other time of day...I absolutely DO NOT eat take out fast food.

Yes, I would feel odd sitting alone at a nice restaurant, though I know I should not feel that way. When I am alone and want a quick lunch, I go to a fast food drive through and eat in my car in their parking lot.

Before I retired, my work, for over 25 years, involved a lot of travel, throughout the US and Europe. 99% of it was solo.

I have never had a problem eating alone at a restaurant, be it a diner in a suburb or a 4 star restaurant in a large city.

As far as which gender is more uncomfortable alone - i've found that it's more men, not women, who seem to need companionship in a public place.

It depends on the crowd. It used to not bother me. The town I live in now seems small. I run into a lot of people I know when I'm out and about. I usually will do takeout so I can eat it alone.

Sometimes. Didn't used to when I was single and had no kids yet. After divorcing I felt really self-conscious especially when other families are around. I usually will get something to go now if I'm alone and eat it at home.

Doesn't bother me at all. Quite often I actually prefer it. Sometimes I like company and sometimes I don't. I am fine eating by myself even in nicer restaurants.

I cannot stand to eat in a vehicle. If I get fast food I either go inside and eat at a table or take it home.

I agree with Monica. My DS surprised me one day by telling me he hates to eat out alone. He is not uncomfortable in any other alone thing I know of.

Ya, I don't really like it. The only time I do it is if I'm traveling on business and then not without a newspaper and my iPhone. I have to be doing something other than gazing off into space. I'm otherwise quite content to do solitary activities but I don't care for dining out solo.

I learned to eat by myself while working. Took the 11am lunch and enjoyed it. Food was always hot and fresh and less people. Just took a book and read. Then back to what can I do wrong next crowd at work (off and on).

No, and don't think it is worth the money to sit by myself and eat. I would get something to go or bring something from home with me.

Doesn't bother me at all, no matter where or when. I always carry a book or magazine (or, nowadays, I have books on my cell phone), so I just read while I eat.

I rarely go out to eat dinner by myself because I dine out for the pleasure of spending time with family or friends, not usually for the food. I eat lunch by myself all the time, though.

Depends what kind of restaurant it is.

Fast-food places: no problem.
2 diners I like, IHOP: no problem.
Any nicer restaurant: I do feel a little awkward.

(About a year ago, after I got back from the airport and realized there was nothing much in the house to cook, I went to a steakhouse type of restaurant that's close to where I live. It was the start of the dinner hour, and there were families there. But I was really needing some red meat, and they had some newspapers in the waiting area, so I took one to my table to read before the food came. It was delish, service was good, I tipped well, I was happy. I guess I always feel that other diners look at me and think, "Oh she has to eat alone. Must not have any friends. How sad.")

I've eaten alone many times (single female). Once had a guy come over and offer to buy me lunch. Other than that, no one made me feel uncomfortaBle. I am, after all, a married woman, and even tho hubby wasn't around, I'd feel it was sort of a "date". So I politely declined his offer. Oh, at that point I'd aready ordered a salad for my own lunch. And, I'm also very shy. When I was in my twenties I took a class intended to help shy people (social phobics). One of the first assignments was, go into a restaurant alone, order dinner and eat it by yourself. These days I have no problem eating out alone. Bringing a newspaper is a great idea.

No problem here. Sometimes treated as a second-class citizen eating alone but then their tip suffers.

I have no problem with eating alone in a resturant be it upscale or not. I don't worry about their bottom line, just my bottom. I tip the waitsperson. However, I do prefer dining with one or more persons especially if we can talk and joke about common interests. These days, I like to enjoy the time and food and not rush the process. I can grab a quick bite when needed, but much prefer the unhurried meal and maybe watch the sun go down over a scenic view.

When I worked I preferred to eat alone...gave me a chance to unwind and refuel for the rest of the day.

Now that we're retired, hubby and I kinda do our own "thang" and don't always eat every meal together...works for us!
