Watching Upstairs/Downstairs again..

Remember the series from the 1970's? I found all 68 episodes of the series uploaded to Utube by someone and am enjoying it all over again.I'm up to Series 4-Episode 10-Part 1, been watching two episodes a night.

I was an avid fan back in those days, sure brings back memories; but I've forgotten many of the episodes. The acting was so good, the characters so real. Last night, I cried throughout two episodes. Poor Rose. But Ruby is back! (I won't give any more spoilers). :)Anyone else a fan of the series?

I didn't care too much for the new Downtown Abbey and only watched the first episode.

I loved tht show unfortunately we didn't have vcrs back then to record them all or at least I didn't Can't remember the names of the characters but it was a must see stay home that night thing back then.

I loved that show too, I miss shows like that now, nothing to compare it too.

Jean, you are correct. Those are my HEART OF FIRE off to the right. Thank you all. Those daylily beds in the upstairs garden (and the iris bed in back of them) used to be my veggie garden. Mostly my tomato garden. But I wanted more daylilies so I made it a mostly daylily garden. Never been sorry as it turned out so wonderful! But I simply couldn't do without my veggies. Tried the cut back plan and it did not work. So have been slowely working this year to make various spots here and there for the veggies.

We are first time home buyers of a condo conversion in San Diego. We moved in at the end of November 2006. In April we got new upstairs neighbors. Ever since it has been hell. They are very nice people, but it sounds like they are constantly moving things and never sit still. The wife is a heavy stepper and so are their friends. We have asked them 3 times to be aware of the people below them. They apologize, it stops for a few days then starts all over again. I have recently written them a letter stating the noise continues and we need to come up with a solution. I even included a log of when we hear them. we literally hear them every minute they are home till they go to bed. They then came back to us and said that they can only tip-toe for so long and it is what it is and maybe the complex needs better insulation. I then explained to them that we only hear one person walking around not two. So clearly it is the heavy footed person and guests we hear. When the husband is home alone we don't hear anything. When my boyfriend went upstairs to talk to them again, I could barely hear him and he is 200lbs and flat footed. And because it is about every minute continuing to log it will be...... well... Not to mention what recourse do we have? Any legal help? We can't call the police on walking or constantly moving furniture. Our HOA says that anything with homeowners is between homeowners unless it is on the HOA property.. We have done it the nice way (SEVERAL TIMES), now our only option is to fight fire with fire.. I want to make noise so when they mention it to us we can make an agreement. Or say "we are simply trying to MASK the noise you are making"... Hmmm this sux! I hate to have to feel and be like this.

Not sure if you have a bad unit, or poor design, or something else going on. It may be that your upstairs unit is doing so little that the downstairs unit is doing double-duty. Since you are a renter, you can't do much unless the unit actually konks out. if the upstairs TStat is getting false temp readings due to its location, then see if keeping the doors open upstairs will remedy this. Here are some free coping ideas: 1-make sure to have clean "furnace" filters in both units 2-make sure that the outdoor units are clean looking. (not covered with leaves, cotton wood debris, blocked by too-close shrubbery, etc) 3- keep shades/drapes closed as much as possible, especially on east/west windows. 4- you didn't say if there are skylights on your second floor. if there are, you might consider covering over with some cardboard inside at least for the next 2-3 weeks when it's crazy-hot outside 5-keep bedroom doors open upstairs to maximize air circulation 6-run the exhaust fans when showering, or cooking (turn off when finished showering or cooking!!)

I assume that you had to add the ductwork when you had the ac installed, as you mentioned radiators. I also have a radiator heat/ac cooling home. Our ac air handler is also in the attic like yours. Our basement has no ac also like yours. Couple of things to ask about. Often these ac retrofits are not ideal design, but practical design to work within the existing home as it relates to ducting and registers. Often there is not a supply and return air register in the rooms, but a ceiling supply register and undercut doorways for return air flow. Our system has a large return air vent in our hallway ceiling going to the attic. Ask your service tech if the duct registers can be adjusted to force more air downstairs. Ask if there is good airflow overall and good return air to your system. If not can they suggest any changes? Were your doors upstairs undercut about an inch for return airflow? Can they add some changes to the ducting to get more airflow downstairs? Ask if the unconditioned basement is contributing to your cooling load on the first floor. Are you running a dehumidifier in the basement? That may help this a bit. If you have a stone foundation, then you likely always will have infiltration here. Do you keep the door at the top of the basement stairs closed? And you are on the right track as to keeping your drapes closed to reduce solar gain. Also be sure to run the exhaust fan while cooking and bathing (and then turn off when finished) As to your drafty doors, that is good to review and will help with your winter bills too.

I loved it and discovered it back then, but I think I missed the opener. For my birthday this summer, my brother and his family gave me the whole series. I have watched a few of the beginning shows, and now I just need to learn how to use all the crazy ways I have to punch buttons to be able to set up the machines by myself so I can watch it and then get out of it and watch tv broadcasts.

sheilajoyce - you are so lucky! I've always wanted the DVD set but it's still expensive. If you don't mind not watching them on TV via your DVD player, you can always put the discs into the DVD player of your computer.

For others, here is the link to Yorkieschannel's uTube videos, who has uploaded the series. This will begin Series One-Episode 1-Part 1. They run in appx.14 - 15min.segments and usually are in four parts. Look to the right to find the next video to continue or most often the next segment will appear after the ending of the one you just watched. When I'm finished watching for the evening, I will click on the one I want to watch next time, pause it before it begins, then"Bookmark" the page so I can return to it later. Then delete in my Bookmarks the one I just finished watching. That way I don't get confused and keep the episodes in order. If you have any questions let me know, and I'll try to help.

I watched episode 1 part 1 a few minutes ago.
I'm glad they broke it up into 4 segments since my utube gets a lot of that swirling thing and has to get started again
I rememberthem all (the characters) I don't remember seeing the first one either

After you're done with U/D, you might look for "The Duchess of Duke Street," a really nice miniseries about a woman working her way "upstairs."

I found it at my library when I was browsing the DVDs and saw that the first few episodes of U/D were already taken out.

Yes I loved TV back in the 60's and 70's. Great Bristish shows-I loved the Avengers, Monty Python, oh, I could go on...

Minnie, the buffering or "swirling thing" can sometimes be stopped by pausing the video, then letting the grey line advance by holding your cursor down on the circle with the red dot. Let it advance (or load)for about a minute then release your cursor. It is irritating, but not all of the videos experience that but it probably depends upon how fast our internet speed is too.
