What's for dinner 10/13?

Tonight we're having cabbage, onion and smoked sausage mixed together and sauteed, and fried apples. Using up what I have before the dreaded grocery shopping tomorrow.

Patti, my X-MIL use to make that. She was Hungarian.

I made a gallon of Beef Stew yesterday. I don't think I'll even finish it tonight. It seems to grow. LOL!

Suggestions above are good. I would say if you would provide good organic material for the soil, the trees will take what they need and leave the rest, so you don't have to worry about the numbers. Lots of compost, slightly aged horse or almost any manure, leaf mold, wood ashes, coffee grounds, whatever you can get, pile it up around the trees, at least a few inches away from the trunks. And you can get all that stuff free. If you just pile wood chips up in a pile for a few years they will make some nice organic material, although it helps if they are mixed with other things like grass clippings. Can you make a deal with some lawn services and landscaping companies to bring you the grass, leaves, weeds, etc. for you to use as mulch/compost for your trees? In the winter I sure wish I knew somebody who wanted the ashes from our wood stove. Some times of the year I spread them in my own orchard, but I don't like doing that in a foot of snow! Really, don't worry about those numbers, plants don't know numbers at all. When the fertilizer is organic and slow release like compost they take whatever they need and are very happy with it. Marcia

WE got a 20" snowfall overnight so its been hectic trying to dig out. Fortunately we had an adequate warning from the weather service ppl the night before so I made a huge pot of chilli in the crock pot. It sure has been nice to go out there and mess with the snow a bit, then come in, pull the heavy clothes and boots off and warm up with a small bowl of chilli and a few cups of hot coffee.

I made a huge pot of chicken noodle soup! We smoked 3 chickens a month ago, deboned and froze all the meat, added some celery, carrots, corn, onions and a small bag of fresh spinach I chopped up and froze...and of course thick noodles..mmm I just took a bowl out of the stock pot and it is cooling in front of me now. I CANNOT make a small pot of soup! Doesn't matter what kind it is, it always turns into a cauldron of soup! LOL

sandy in ia you must come from a large family. I'm the same way when I cook, can't cook for two for the life of me. There was 8 of us. Always left overs here. Speaking of which, it's slow cooked italian beef sandwiches tonight. yum, your soup sounds wonderful. We're deep frying a turkey shortly, looking forward to turkey noodle soup here.

We went to Costco today so we are having rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, a veggie and cranberry sauce.

I can't make small portions of anything, either. Just doesn't seem right, somehow. After dinner, Harry told me I could make the fried apples again--the utmost compliment! I'll post the recipe tomorrow on the "I'll share mine" post. They were pretty darned good.
