Suggestions for a 60th Wedding Annv gift

My sister and brother in law will have their 60th wedding anniversary Dec 25th...Their kids are throwing them a party this weekend as the weather is to iffy at Christmas time...

Do you have any suggestions for a gift?

I did a square quilt for my parents. Send everyone a Piece of fabric the size of a quilt square you are going to use and have them decorated anyway they want. Something related to why and how they know each other or a favorite thing they do together. Have them send them back and make up a quilt with the squares.

Houseful, just as an added idea, when we planned DH's parents' 50th surprise party, one of the things that we added at the last minute was a guest book for all the guests to sign. There was space to add addresses so we could send thank you cards later, and pockets to put photos that we printed off, so the parents could sit back later and reminisce over the events. We enlisted one of the grandteens to wander the crowd, sit with guests, and offer the guest book. It ended up being a lovely memory book! Don't forget to have a few extra vases for flowers that WILL arrive, and need a place to be displayed. Many of the inlaws flowers were later donated to a seniors home, so the vases we picked up were just from the dollar store, and we didn't need to worry about getting them back to owners. Not sure on what your situation will be regarding gifts, but we picked up a large basket for the usual anniversary cards and the small tags that were included with gifts. We also had someone in charge of writing on the back of some of the gift tags, just what the person had given the parents. Made it very easy to mention what the gift had been, and the giver if for instance "Love Mary" had been written on the card. Which Mary? Who? LOL. We ended up with a large 3 ring binder of "stuff", info on bakeries, caterers, videographers, business cards, bed and breakfast locations for incoming guests, maps of the area, etc etc, and pages and pages of notes of who was taking care of what, who was picking up what when, who was booking whatever. It was very handy to have one point of reference for all the info. We had a most lovely time arranging the anniversary surprise, as the parents live in England and some of the logistics of organizing long distance with all the siblings spread out across the UK and Canada, were a little more difficult to iron out. I will say that some of the best moments were not caught on camera or video sadly, but we all have lots of fabulous memories that we cherish! We DID have guests that showed up hours early, for some unknown reason, as they lived near the inlaws, intown, but oh well! We put them to work too! LOL Enjoy your event, and be prepared to be exhausted at the end!

Here's a suggestion for your future benefit. My son has sat me down a couple of times and had me tell the recorder about my life when I was young, about the house that we lived in, taking a bath in the galvanized wash tub behind the stove on Saturday night, doing farm work at age 10 when the hired hands went off to war, etc. Such a project would be valuable to you and the other families in future, I imagine, possibly especially for the grandkids (and theirs - if the equipment in those days will still reproduce [if you'll pardon the expression] current recorded material's carrier). ole joyfuelled

Well. I didn't get a wine Safari! But a year and a month (or two) AFTER my 60th, DH and I finally went to Lake Geneva, just as I hoped for last year. We went to a different part of the lake than the tourist town, but had a nice sandwich (seriously, hands-down THE best chicken wrap I ever had, FRESH-cooked chicken, I watched him slice it, at this little hole-in-the-wall spot) walked a bit of the lake path, some fabulous ice cream, then drove around the lake. It was so nice, though I didn't get my shandy on a patio. So, since it's only an hour or so away, I went a few weeks later with a girlfriend! We had lunch and a shandy overlooking the lake, shopped, and just had fun. Happy Birthdays to all!

I was just remembering back to what my dad gave my grandparents for their 60th wedding anniversary. This is not traditional, but my grandparents were not traditional type people. Apparently my grandfather had always wanted a huge bell. My dad found one that was two or three feet...not sure... at a flea market. My grandfather mounted that thing on a tall stand in front of their house. My grandmother loved it. My grandparents lived on five acres with trees and several buildings. My grandfather was the type of guy that always had a project and was out and about doing stuff. My grandmother had her own projects and didn't always feel like tracking down my grandfather. My grandmother rang that bell when she wanted my grandfather back up at the house. They both thought that was great. My dad didn't do this, but that gift would have gone along great with a little something that made a pun about ringing each other's bell. A lot of people including myself love bird feeders, garden art, etc. You could do something like a big metal wind spinner and make a joke off of still going after all of these years. I think one of the sun/moon faces might be cute too. You could make a reference to the two of them working as a couple or something.

What georgysmom said. Or a nice bottle of wine or two if they like that sort of thing. Anyway, I'd get them something consumable.

I've suggested this before, but a digital picture frame is a great gift. You could collect photos from the beginning of the their courtship and marriage until now. Scanning the non digital ones or turning slides into digital images is pretty easily done these days.

Because you have a bit of time, you might think back, ask them or the kids a bit about each year and put together a simple scrapbook of that event. Such as moving into a new home, getting a pet, special trip etc. Just a couple of itmes to bring back the memories.
Whoops, I mean a page for each event, not a whole book, or even a couple of events. I would make it notebook size 8 1/2x11. You can get plenty of material or even use cardstock and cut your own.

Our kids gave us a digital picture frame. Then one son spent hours loading it with pictures we have taken over the years. Now when our DD emails us pictures, they automatically are loaded onto the digital picture frame. We just turn it on and let it run. It is amazing how you forget what pictures you took over the years. Now we remember.

Thanks for asking this! My parents will be married 60 years on Thanksgiving Day. I'm hosting the party in my home. You're all giving good suggestions to the inevitable "what should I buy" questions. Keep them coming!

I've scanned in close to 450 pictures since the first of July to my puter (thank you hubster for a huge hard drive!) ...It started when her kids asked for pictures from our Moms picture box which I got when she passed away 23 years ago...I got old pictures from my other sister and a sister in law so I've been a busy bee the last few months..Her kids had a DVD put together for their party this weekend (I can't wait to see it!) I'm guessing I'll probably give them a digital frame so those pictures can run all the time...My sis is computer hopeless so whenever it's time to add pictures one of her kids will probably do it for them!

Thanks for all your suggestions and yes Woodsy it is quite an accomplishment to achieve 60 years as husband and wife! They were married at 16, neither of them ever got their high school diploma...that in itself is amazing and they managed to stay together and raise 5 kids...now they have 9 grandkids and 9 great grandkids!
