Flamey,

Thanks for the pattern for the tiny decorative knit socks. I had some left over sock yarn and made 2 little socks yesterday and this morning from it. Now I wish I had more left over self striping sock yarn dribs and drabs, but no one wants to wear my homemade socks here, so that is the end of my stash.

I can see using them as decorations on a tree (with a little Christmas candy in them) or even on the top of a present using yarn instead of a ribbon to tie the gift or attaching them to a strand of yarn to decorate a doorway or mirror or mantle.

It is a great way for a beginner to learn how to make a sock too with very little effort.

I always wondered: if you have low self-esteem, how in the world do you **fix** that? The media tells us we need to volunteer in a soup kitchen, or build a log house shed in the backyard to "develop" our self esteem...to see how others have it worse than us, or be able to have something to show for our work. Somehow, that doesn't seem like the right medicine for the problem. Most people with low self-esteem (excluding those who were horribly physically abused, molested etc. which of course would generate esteem issues) are people who were usually verbally put down all the time as kids. They then became super sensitive to any type of even vaguely negative criticism. I have seen people who are at the top of their game at work & who have great self-esteem about their capabilites, absolutely **crumble** with self doubt about thier looks, social skills/climbing abilities, etc. And what about that nagging self doubt about parenting: Are you a good enough parent? Are you doing it right? or is YOUR kid gonna be the one who comes home (SURPRISE!)with a baby or a meth habit at age 12? Self esteem isn't like a foundation to our spiritual house...it's just an offshoot of our morality, character, resiliance, and knowledge of our hidden super powers!! LOL. Yes, there is a certain mourning of a loss of Girl Power as our looks fade. You either get over it and find value in things other than your ass or face, or get stuck in only valueing your physical attractiveness. Which leads to odd looking face and breast lifts and hot-pants at age 55. Having a normal weight body is like money in the bank. It allows you to do so many things with that health equity! Being limited in what you can do physically (can you fit in the bumper cars at the carnival? How about the Ferris wheel ride?) will EAT YOUR SELF ESTEEM AWAY in huge gulps. No morbidly obese person is gonna be able do the exciting physical things (white water rafting? horse back riding?) that a normal weight person can do without some serious modifications and cash-up-front, if at all. It is THOSE wild physical, adrenaline making experiences missed out on that don't re-generate the spirit and the self-esteem! 350 pound people don't have the energy to build a stage set for the local high school play! Sure, they can "get value" from reading books to toddlers at the library, but that won't give them the bang for their buck they need. When your self esteem is seriously low, the body needs reinvigoration by doing strong, physical activities to get the spirit up & sailing again. So, it's like an endless circle: how to grow self-esteem when the vibrant activites needed are pretty much off limits?? No one wants to keel over digging a community garden! You can drive to a high mountaintop to take in the breath-taking views, but there is not the same self esteem growth that would have come from the challenge of doing the hike UP the mountain to see that view as the reward for the climb. Until I magically become less sensitive to what people say, I limit my visits and chats with others. (No one can figure out how to be less sensitive, either.) I still expect people to see the Godliness in each other, and when that doesn't happen, I still am amazed. I go out, do my thing, but with family and few friends who I know are kind and don't make sarcastic, negative, passive/aggressive comments. I protect my heart and what little self esteem I have home-grown myself. It is easier (and calmer) to stay away from those people who want to hoe-out my tiny shoots of self esteem with a snotty comment or thoughtless chide. It is so easy for others to be mean. They have no clue how it nibbles at our own self concept. "Well, you need to be less sensitive, then!" some would say. Well, no. I don't. I like being sensitive and introspective and logical. Mingo, you never know when M & I will show up! I have printed both patterns. We will see how much of my Christmas knitting gets done before I try them, tho. My brother makes a concoction the kids call his "goop". Its 1/3 aloe, 1/3 tea tree ointment, and 1/3 vitamin E ointment, very slightly warmed in the microwave, and blended together. It is the best thing I've ever found for any kind of burn. You bet I went and found my jar of it! It still has that funny feel to it, but I can knit today. I didn't even try last night. I'll be sure to tell J hi for you. Lindsey, I've used size ones for my neice's socks for Christmas a few years ago. I use size 2 all the time for most of the socks I make. I have a set of Mini knitting needles that are used to hold a shawl together. There are, I think, six in the set. Wonder if I can make a part of a hat or mitten and slip it onto those with a scrap of yarn ball and turn that into a pin?! It HAS to wait! I can't do any thing else until the rest is done! Knitting is very easy to learn even with just a book. I taught myself with a simple little how to book.

Aren't these the cutest little tree ornaments? And like they suggest, they would be an adorable advent item, just embroider a number, 1-25, on each one. Gosh, I just love little, tiny things.
I thought I should share these since we were just talking about knitted socks!

Moni, Mum is off of knitting right now, she doesn't even want to make regular sized socks right now. She's not seeing as well as she used to and that thin sock yarn and tiny needles would send her over the edge! She's enjoying not having any projects right now, she had gotten a little OCD over the scrubbies and dishcloths.
She even gave me back that skein of very cool yarn that makes the stripes and patterns as you knit, she said she'll never use it for socks and wants me to find a new home for it. I can't return it to the store where I got it, though, since she knitted a couple of inches of cuff.

Mingo, I have a pattern that you can use to crochet little stockings- they are "lumpier" than these but still cute. My mom and I have made 100s over the years. Ya want me to send it to you?
Oh, Stewie is afraid of his new cat toy. For a cat who loves to sit in the window and "chirp" at the birds at the feeder, he sure is scare of a toy bird that chirps! LOL

Those are darling little sockies. I bet your small, nimble fingers could crank out a bunch of those Flamey. Maybe it's time you learned a new craft. You might enjoy it this winter while sitting in front of the fire watching Survivor and Amazing Race. I learned just the basic knit one pearl two kind of knitting years ago. I was going to make a sweater. I think it just turned out a long scarf looking piece and I gave up. LOL

I do lots of stuff without patterns... specially in crocheting. Never learned to follow an American crocheting pattern.

I am hopeless when it comes to doing anything with yarn and needles or hooks, I have tried and I just cannot get past the awkwardness of it all, I become fumblefingers. So I gave up trying, I knew if I needed something knitted or crocheted, I could get Mum to do it for me, or find someone other sucker, er, friend to help me out! lol And I think tiny stockings might be harder than full-sized ones.
I could sew some, but I think the knitted ones are just so precious. Thanks, Janie, for the offer. Send it to the Buzzard, though, because she's going to need it!

I'm wondering what you were doing looking at a knitting/yarn web site!!! I know you don't know how to use a hook or needles! Those are cute. I saved the pattern to the hard drive, as we don't have a printer in the motor home.

I am reminded of my mother's description of the cornucopias that were put on the tips of the tree's branches. Inside each were candies for the children. I think these little stockings would look cute with some Christmas candies in them too.

Well, I finally put some paper in my printer ready to print out this mini sock pattern, and I cannot find the pattern. I find sites that talk about the pattern, even give the gauge and yarn and needle size, but no pattern. Anyone out there with the pattern for us?

I don't have a digital camera but there are pictures with the pattern. I thought the pattern site would copy too, but I guess it did not. Try this--

Oh, good!......... er, Rats!...... um, DARN!

lol, I figured they would be adorable, Sheilajoyce, I want some! I don't need 'em, but I want 'em. For some unknown reason, I just really like little things.

Now, if you're going to use them to decorate packages and such, I think that totally justifies going and buying more sock yarn. And if you get the kind that self-stripes, no 2 would be alike, so really, one skein of that would do ya for a while! AND, you could probably do a swap with other knitters here and send yarns back and forth across the KT country and get all kinds of different yarn colors so you could have a great variety.

I'm happy you're happy! Wouldn't mini mittens be precious, too? I think you should join the ornament exchange, who wouldn't love to get one of these????
