Name three special foods that make your holiday meals special.

I would say for me, it would be...

1. Turkey and the trimmings

2. Yeast Rolls (homemade)

3. Homemade pie of any kind, especially black raspberry

What 3 things do you like to have at any of your holiday meals?

A good baked ham.

Buttery Yukon Gold mashed potatoes.

Good bread stuffing with oysters and a can of turkey gravy poured over the top.

I know you said three, but it isn't the holidays unless I make a batch of my fudge.

Home made breads and rolls or yorkshire pudding.

The best foods to make a goldfish grow is just a good variety of foods. An example, I have two ryukin fry in a 66 gallon. They have doubled in size since I got them a little over a month ago. I am feeding Frozen brine shrimp Frozen blood worms Frozen goldfish food...which contains spiralina,bloodworms, veggies, and krill Hikari goldfish pellets for orandas another kind of pellets...can't remember the name flakes...a variety shrimp pellets Hikari algae wafers. If I could find the hikari wheat germ pellets, I would add them also.....but there is no chance of finding them around here. Keep the water very clean and your goldfish will grow and flourish. I'm corning our own flat cut brisket this year-- used a recipe from Bob Appetit-- the brine contains Lager-- it's brined for a total of eight days-- will be interesting to see if it's as good as Dad's old corning recipe. Also planning to do a Beer Cake-- it's originally a German recipe but hey if it's got beer it COULD be Irish. Home Cookin Chapter: Heirlooms , Traditional & Ethnic Gugelhupf Bierkuchen (German Beer Cake) ======================================= 1 cup molasses 1/2 cup butter at room temperature 1 (12 ounce) bottle beer 1 cup raisins, plumped and dried 2-2/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon baking powder (double action) 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon EACH, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger (I use 1 teaspoon cinnamon) 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans or filberts, toasted Glaze (see recipe below) . Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour a 9 or 10-inch tube, bundt or gugelhupf (sometimes spelled Kugelhopf) pan. Combine the molasses, butter, and beer in a saucepan and heat only until the butter melts. Stir in the raisins or currants and let the mixture cool for 15 minutes. Sift together the dry ingredients. Stir in the nuts. Pour the cooled beer mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. Pour the batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated 350° F (180°C) oven for 45 60 minutes (I check at 45 minutes, mine took 50 minutes). Remove from oven and let stand for 15 minutes before turning out on a wire rack. Let cake cool a bit before drizzling glaze over it. GLAZE: Mix 1 cup icing sugar and enough maple syrup (or liquid honey) to moisten the icing sugar to the drizzling stage. Pour glaze over the top of the cake and let it run down the sides.

This recipe I have served to company for many years. Not only is it fork tender, but your home will smell delish while it's in the oven! Sharon's Swiss Steak-serves 4-6 ********************* 8-10 pieces of cubed steak meat 2 cans Campbell's french onion soup flour salt & pepper ** Lay waxed paper on your countertop. Place the meat on the paper & sprinkle 1 Tbs flour over each piece. Season with pepper & lightly with salt. Using the edge of a saucer, lightly pound the flour into the meat-using a twisting motion of your wrist. Flip meat over & repeat. In a large frying pan-add oil to cover bottom of pan-heat till hot, then sear the meat for 1 min on each side. Have a 13x9 baking pan near the pan so you can transfer the steaks to the pan the minute they are seared. Place 1/2 can of the onion soup in bottom of pan before placing seared meat in the 13x9. Stagger the pieces in the pan-pour the remaining 1 and 1/2 cans of the soup over the meat. Cover with foil and bake at 350° for 60 min until fork tender. Remove foil & bake for 10 more minutes. I usually put baked potatoes in the oven at the same time. The au jus is delightful on the potatoes at serving! If you want two entrees-may I suggest Roast Cornish Hens? (which would go in the oven earlier-then nuke to reheat if not enough room for both meats in the oven.)..this is also a no fuss and they roast to a crispy, golden brown! Roast Cornish Hens ****************** Choose the smaller frozen hens (around 1 lb or less) that you can find-allow a good half day to thaw. Rinse the birds & dry w/paper toweling. Spray shallow baking pan & place hens on the pan. Season w/salt & pepper-inside & out. In a bowl place 1 stick of butter, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 2 Tbs minced onion and 1 Tbs paprika. Mix together then reserve 1/2 the mixture to baste the birds with. Using your hands-rub each bird with the mixture. Cover with foil and roast at 350° for 45 min. then remove foil for another 30-45 min...basting every 15 min.with remaining mixture.

Wow, some of the things some of you won't eat are absolutely delicious! Some are even favorites of mine! I guess I won't say 'never'. But at this point, I have never tried the following foods and have no wish to do so. Brains Kidneys Insects Raw seafood Ok, I named four. But I really do like most food items, or at least am ok with them.

When I think of holiday dinners when I was growing up I think of home made pasta of some sort, roasted chestnuts at Thanksgiving and Christmas and for Christmas eve many fish dishes. Of course I do none of the above exceptchestnuts! Satine

1. Granny's turkey and dressing- when she moved the pan did not fit into the oven- had to take it to the fire station and they used the jaws of life to cut the handles off. HAD to have the dressing in the dressing pan!

2. Granny's buttermilk biscuits

3. Nama's fudge icing (didn't care about the cake underneath, just want the fudge icing!

I am Asian and resent asian food for Thanksgiving. If we're living in the US and agreed to observe the Thanksgiving meal, a turkey is a must on the table and cooked in the traditional American style. LOL...

All the side dishes seemed to fall into the "starch" category: mash potato, sweet potato casserole, corn, etc.

So, we must have Cranberry Relish to disolve all the starch and the fats (wishful thinking :o).

As for Christmas, I'm not bias.

Rhizo_1, of course the holidays are not about food. Nevertheless, certain traditional holiday brings certain food expectation. Turkey is much associated with Thanksgiving and that is also expected. As far as asian food, maybe it's special for you but for us, it's every day meals. Nothing special about it.

Btw, there is no such thing as an "Asian Thanksgiving" theme. LOL... Unless, you want to be the first to create one.

Really good giblet gravy makes the meal for me.
The other two are cornbread dressing made like my DM made, and of course pumpkin pie, not store-bought.

blfenton, do you have a recipe for the carrot pudding? I'm always looking ways to use carrots, because I really like them.

I meant no offense, ntt. I was just looking back with fondness on a couple of holiday dinners I attended while a student at a good sized multi-cultural university. Each of us brought a favorite dish from "home"; one year we sampled food from Nigeria, Argentina, Korea, Yugoslavia, England, India, US, and more. Everyone was happy to bring something to pass around the table.

Of course that also comes with all the trimmings, home made picke & relish trays, mashed potatoes & gravy, squash, 3 bean salad, saute'd parsnips, at least a half dozen assorted pies

and to top it all off, a steamed plum pudding with plum sauce for desert.
