I've never heard of it till now. Let us know how it works out for you.

Will do....we've had our same phone number for almost 30 years and I'd hate to lose it. If I stop my phone service and this doesn't work out I'd have to get another one. DH says "so what??" I say it's part of the family! LOL....I hate changes...really I do! Going to try it...if it saves me about 60.00 a month and that would make me happy. With this I can keep my current phone number for life it says...hope it works!

My sister just got Magicjack and so far she is happy with it.

I recently got it, it did not work well, and I returned it.

I got it hooked up and made several test calls to folks at different times of the day and night (thinking my computer speed might be varying widely, and there was not one decent call. Folks I called, likened it to talking to someone on a cell phone that was cutting out...maybe hearing just every other word.

I went on line to see what I had to do to return it and get my credit card credited (or not charged if the charge had not hit yet). Before returning it, one has to get an MRA #...Material Return Authorization #. In order to get one, I had to go to Magic Jack Live Chat. He then wanted to 'help' me try and 'fix' it so it would work. I asked if there was a number I could call him at, and was told there was no number. I was on line with 'live chat' for probably 1 hour before I told him I just wanted to give up trying to fix it, and I just wanted the RMA #. He was very polite and gave me the number. One then has to print out the form to return it, and return it in the original packaging.
I did get word from them that they had received it back, and my account would be credited. I have not yet checked to see if it was charged or credited to my Credit Card.

Save your packaging, until you decide it works well enough to suit you that you won't be returning it.

I don't think I would cancel my landline with out testing it out for a month or two. You could drop down to very basic service on your landline to get it cheaper during the trial time.

If you loose power or your internet connection - you won't have any phone service. I think they do support e911.

I have dialup, so I can't get it anyway (it doesn't work with satellite either) - but we loose power enough, that I wouldn't want to not have a phone during those times.

Had it worked well for me, I was going to just use it for long distance calls, and still keep my land line.
Recently when Hurricane Ike came through here (Indiana) with high winds, my power, along with so many others in the state, was out for 3 days. I was so thankful that I had a working phone line, that I could visit via phone and check in on loved ones.

I am using it around the country with my new job. So far we have about 10 of them and they have been great. One has been fried during the storm in Fla. You must have high speed to use it and even then some high speed is not very speedy wich can disturb the quality of the connection. I have dial up so I can just report what my employees think of it. I have heard they can be a bit of a problem with returns and billing. Keep in mind I have to pay an additional $49.00 a month for unlimited long distance (on top of my land line basics),compared to $20 someting a YEAR with this devise. Wish we could get high speed out here in the woods!

My DD got one and hated it. Wasn;t worth the hassle for her. Dropped calls, the quality was terrible, etc.

She got a "real number" through Skype and is very happy with that.

Thanks....I was very leery about this, but willing to try it. I hate talking on cell phones from my house and that's what we'd have to depend on if the computer goes down....that was my gripe to DH.

Gwanny,

Who is your telephone service with? The reason why I ask, is that mine is with Verizon. That is the only phone service available here in my rural area. I 'did' have a package with them, and had unlimited Long Distance. Whenever anyone called me from a land line, I would call them back and save them a little money.

After the Magic Jack fiasco, I checked Verizon prices on line (boy, that is sure hard to do, since they want to sell packages). I finally called them and found out I could get the land line for I think $14, and call waiting (the only feature I really want/need) was an additional $3.50. I then signed up with Transworld for my Long Distance carrier, and it is 4 1/2 cents a minute...quite reasonable.

Depending upon how much my Long Distance runs, I may think about additionally getting Vonage just for LD.
I would still keep my landline as I found out too that I will get it and one feature for 1/2 price since I am a retiree. Verizon is practically 'giving' me service for next to nothing.

A friend in Texas has Vonage on her Cable computer hook up, and it works well for her. Occasionally though her Cable Computer goes down though and then she is left without a phone.
