Lye soap questions (kinda long)

I am trying to piece together a functional semblance of my DGM's LYE SOAP recipe from everyone's memories. She would take the ashes from a "Clean-wood" fire and pour about 3/4 gal of water over them. Then she would let this soupy mixture set for two or three days and collect the lye from it.

QUESTIONS: Is lye heavier or lighter then water? Would it mostly sink to the bottom or float to the top? Does anyone know how to figure the "lye percentage" of this soup? If you know anyone that has a recipe that starts that way I would appreciate an introduction.

We used DGM soap for showering, laundry, cement driveways, car wheels (nothing painted), dishes, mopping, etc....

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. As times get harder, I believe this recipe would be handy to have. I could kick myself for not getting her to teach me how this soap was made.
