Nate's in Hawaii, Having A Great Time

Here's an update on my grandson Nate. He's having a great time.

Hawaii Update

Hello

I have heard from Nate a couple of times but was waitng to post till maybe some photo's came through. He did tell me last night that Lynette

(nurse from Children's) was having trouble loading them, and we would get them when they got home.

Some of the fun things: the first day the group went surfing. They had a small lesson, then had about 2 hours to go on their own. This was a favorite so far since Nate is such a water nut. Tuesday they went to Pearl Harbor. Nate said that was pretty cool a got some good pictures. After Pearl Harbor they had a beach cook out/party which was planned. What the kids didn't know was that the "Sunshine Kids Organization" surprised the kids with a visit from a popular musician named Jack Johnson. I didn't know him but Nick did and pulled up his music on the computer and I had heard of one song called "Upside Down". Nate said he just came and hung out at the beach with them and also brought his guitar and did sing a few songs. The guy must be pretty nice because Nate got him to put an away message on his cell phone saying something like "Hey this is Jack Johnson-Nates busy right now hanging out at the beach with me, he'll call ya back later" . Wednesday was a snorkling/sailing day. Nate said they all went on this huge catamaran sail boat and then later went snorkling. He said he was swimming next to a big turtle and the fish were all so colorful. Thursday they took them to an awsome water park during the day and the evening they went to a Hawaiian Dance/Dinner.

I know when Nate gets home I will get alot more detail about all these different adventures, but right now I have to share the phone with Dad and Nick when he calls, so I'll add more on my next post. One thing I am surprised about is how much shopping he is doing on his free time. I thought he would spend most of it on the beach but I guess there is a great strip of venders just across the street they like to go to. He said you can bartar with them and get things pretty cheap. (Way to go Nate)

We pick Nate up at the airport this Sunday aroud 2:00 so will try to post again that night. Have a good weekend.

It sounds like Nate is really enjoying his trip. I'm anxious to hear more about it when he gets home. I hope he took some pictures.

It also seems that the 'Hoyt W.B.' is an Abies lasiocarpa seedling selection instead of a witches' broom. This is because of it's fast growth... 'Hoyt H.B.' isn't possible because the "H.B." stands for 'Hexensenbezen" in German or 'Heksenbezem' in Dutch. It's found in the U.S. at the Hoyt Arboretum so it will be "W.B." which stands for witches' broom. I either don't understand why they didn't see the difference between an Abies lasiocarpa and an Abies amabilis. The first one does have very big buds and the last one does have very tiny buds... I think the cause is a lack of information and/or interst in the those species...

Yes, I have to agree, he is easy on the eyes but to me he looks are the same as his taste, not fussy and well, as strange as it sounds, calming. Oh, not strange at all, in fact well put. He comes across as not taking things too seriously. First time I saw him on O he mentioned losing his partner in a tragedy (the tsunami comes to mind, but not sure). It seemed like that had a tremendous impact on him (naturally) and changed his outlook to a 'less is more, keep it in perspective, don't sweat the small stuff' mentality. That's the kind of impression I got, anyway, from listening to him talk about it.

hey you're up late BD! Nothin better to do here this AM, raining like H---! My own personnel take is that it might be a good tool eventually for contractors like you to help determine if a guy is worth hiring. If the guy can't pass a NATE test than maybe all he can do is well,,,, urinate! As for customers, its kind of like Mr Goodwrench. But they haven't pushed an advertising campaign for our trade yet. If one of your vans broke down on the road all you're concerned about is getting in back up and running and back out where its making the company money again right? Do you care who does the work? I think the same would go for someone faced with a heating or cooling dilema when its 110 degrees or minus 10. Nate who?!!! I live in NH and for the heating and cooling profession no license is required so any bimbo can try to make a living in the trade. So a NATE up here would purge the trade of most of the ones who should give it up. But when I lived in CT they had several different journeyman licenses with limitations, plus just burner licenses and probably some others I just didn't care to persue. You also needed documented proof of X amount of time in the trade to test for a particular license or to test up to the next level. Only a fool of a contractor would send an unlicensed tech out alone. The fines are pretty steep and you have to show your license to anyone who asks and some bldg. inspectors are just downright jerks about it. So my point being what good is a NATE certification in a state like that? Its our answer to Mr Goodwrench.

The Nate Berkus show is a snorefest, it's just simply boring. I'm not sure who is producing the concept for each show but everytime I watch I want to scream - it's that painful. First, his set is so dull and has no personality. Same with the way he dresses. And him always holding those big blue Nate cards as if he has to have something 'show hosty' in his hand out of insecurity. Lastly, the so-called "decorating" segments are very lame. Today I couldn't believe the props he used as examples; some were tattered, worn, stained and just plain didn't go with and shouldn't have been used for display. Today the couple he was supposedly showing how to choose and intergrate each others tastes just seemed to have to go along with the lame staging. I almost felt sorry for Nate - he seems to be out of his element as a host and does a lot of irrelevant 'talking' that is awkward. At best his advice for decorating comes off amateurish in this venue even though on Oprah I think he did much better.

I'm so happy that Nate was able to go on this trip that will supply him with so many fun memories. I'll be glad when we can see some pictures.

Love it, Leslie. I hope all this fun has given his mind a break from some of the tough things he has been through or yet to come. HE must be thrilled to have his new phone message. That's cool! (haven't said 'cool' in sometime :)

Ah, that's great. I'm glad he feels well enough to enjoy the trip and all those fun activities. Sounds like so much fun.
