Can I brag a little?

I'm just SO happy for my oldest son (he's one of my twins). He graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He just started a great job a month ago with a fantastic company, and he LOVES his job!

Yesterday he went car shopping w/his dad and came home with a very gently used (2000 miles) 2012 Hyundai Elantra. He's just so excited, and we are very happy for him. He has a great future ahead of him!

Sorry, nope, west is pointing straight at the camera, you're look straight east. North is left. Plus, we sit on a ridge, so it gets cold. Last year when it got really cold I had 5 heaters going (had plastic up to cut it down to 16' x 8') and still lost a few plants. I guess I'm going to splurge and buy a big propane heater like Tom has... I just hate spending that kind of money to heat a greenhouse. Thanks Kevin... NO WAY am I growing 5000, I've got my preliminary count at 3800 and I'm trying to get it under 3000... And nope, not a compost pile. we had a big maple behind the house, it had a diameter of around 4-5', but the last few years of drought took it's toll and it died, that's some of it's remains. I had the guys leave some of the chips for me to use as mulch... :-( I'd rather have the tree. Pam

i know things can be a challenge for non handy people but ill try to give you a run down of my costs.lumber for a 2x12x4 sfg box (scrap box at menards eg customer cut offs .69/board 4 boards plus tax maybe $2.50)box of 3in. deck screws 5-6$,electric drill maybe 20$,square head,#2 screw bit 5-6$,1/8 inch drill bit 5-6$.point is the screws,driver,drill bit and the drill can make more than one box they are fixed costs.my 11 and 14 year old boys made my last 2 boxes while i planted some early seeds.its not hard.i agree you might have some costs associated with transportation but i figure if i have 5$ total invested in a 4x4 box im overestimating my cost a lil.i use cardboard for weed suppression so even if you had weed fabric for the bottom its still a really high cost for your box.i dont use mels mix but i wouldnt think you would have 25$ or more if you used the exact recipe.so if this helps you on what true value is its just what i have in it,maybe 20%using my mix and maybe #30 dollars using mels mix.hey enjoy the outdoors.

AWESOME! i love hearing of kids who are happily excelling in sciences! college costs will always go up, hopefully the university uses them to further education and the status of the university's programs. my dh has been fulltime at Univ central FL since 2007 and tuition has gone up 25% w/ another 15% increase for this fall and it is still nationally ranked as a good buy in colleges. his mechanical engineering program has tremendous industry support (both $$$ & thru teaching) so we are o.k. w/ increases. the univ has gone from 5th largest in this country to 3rd in 2 yrs, plus the engineering dept is nationally well ranked, very important for future jobs. in the long run when you are in programs that can all but guarantee a very high salary, the costs to get there are fractional. my dh has now known 3 yrs worth of graduating friends and not a single one had to go to graduation w/o atleast a couple of job offers to choose from which is in the end the most important result of education IMO. you should be very proud, his successes reflect very well on you mom! ~ liz

Just absolutely gorgeous! you are a very lucky woman, and I feel the same EXACT way. My hubby was a home builder. He was hit head on at 65 mph by a driver who crossed over the double yellow line. The driver died, as well as his wife and two year old little boy. I still get chills when I talk about it. This happened 4 years ago. Hubby was in a wheelchair for two years - he came home and was in a hospital bed with IV drips, I gave him shots in the stomach every night, changed the dressing in huge holes in his leg and butt (the nurses in the hospital trained me how to do this -- god bless those nurses!) the docs didn't expect him to live. When he was able to walk again, with one foot fused completely and the other fused 75%, the docs told him to get out of construction. This big, beautiful, Irish, Stubborn Man, built our home AFTER he was told "to get out of construction". ALL he needed to hear was that "he couldn't".

Congratulations to your son! My son is in college and I really worry that he won't find a job or have to settle for something he hates doing.

Congratulations. I am curious how difficult he found it to locate a job. Did he do any internships? Did he have any jobs in his field as he was earning his degree?

I feel so sorry for all the graduates these days who are looking for jobs and finding no one is hiring. I am wondering about his experience.

Keep on bragging,you've earned the right.Congrats to him on the degree,the job and the car.Hyundai's are great cars.I have a 2001 Sonata and it's 10 years old now and still going strong.Thank goodness.

I love success stories! You surely have bragging rights to this one! He is making good decisions and being responsible. So happy to know that he was able to find a good job with the economy the way it is. Glad you posted!

He made a great choice on the car front! Great gas mileage!

(Oh, yeah -- and a big pat on the back on his degree and getting a job that he's liking!)

I know a parent can never really "relax" about your kids, but you get to breath a big sign of relief that he's on solid footing.

Congratulations! You have every right to be proud! I remember when I graduated college, one loving aunt gave me a leather keycase, hoping I would soon fill it with an apartment and car keys. She was right-I graduated in May and had an apt and a car by December.
