Our evening last nite

A friend invited us to her sister and Brother-in-law's home last nite. They are part of Home Routes, where musicians do a tour, and they stay at host homes.

The couple open their home to a musician, duo or sometimes a trio.....all acoustic music mostly folk, bluegrass/blues style music. People pay $20 for a nite of food and original music. It was great!!

The hosts put up the musician and then they travel to the next home. For instance, this fellow travelled from Oklahoma to Ontario, is staying in our area for 2 nights, then is doing 9 more shows in Ontario.....Toronto area, Ottawa, northern Ontario, then in Manitoba and will be returning home Nov. 2. Very cool!

It was very enjoyable, and we had a lot of fun, and great folks to spend an evening with. There were about 25 of us.

What a great way to share live music in a relaxed and intimate setting. Lucky you to be invited.

A friend of mine does something similar several times a year, hiring jazz groups or Irish musicians and having a party. People have urged him to charge admission, but he insists on paying for everything himself. It's always a great time.

I hadn't heard of Home Routes. Nice idea!

Karen, yep, DGD knows Nana to well already. I'm always up to makin' a mess if it means having fun. Jane, your so right. Some of the best times aren't planned. We talked about how lucky the girls are that the guys jumped in to carve for them. If there would of been more time I can only imagine what they would of come up with. I was pretty impressed when DS cut a little bit off to be able to get them to sit up right and use the stems as noses. He even made me put candles in them so he could see how they would look lit up. Luvs, the popcorn balls were enjoyed by all we shared with and we shared with several. I really like my recipe and if anyone needs an easy one would be more than happy to share. Don't need a candy thermometer to make these. NanaK, sometimes I do better when events aren't planned. Is this known as flying by the seat of our pants?LOL Frou, I'll let the guys know you commented on the teeth. To bad I didn't bring all of them in so they would be orange but I kinda like having the different colors. I offered to paint them but they didn't think it was necessary and I think they were right. J, glad you enjoyed these. I'm not always sure what to share but since we don't have a discussion post guess this was just fine here. Jeanne, that is such a neat picture of GGS on that big scarecrow. Kids are pretty lucky now days when it comes to entertainment. We went out to mom's garden to pick pumpkins when I was growing up.LOL Luvs, glad to hear you and DGD had a fun time at the "punkin patch". Some times us Gramma's need to look the other way and not be over protective. Easier said than done huh? So glad you all enjoyed seeing the carved pumpkins. I'm thinking it may become an annual event for a few years and I'm sure it will take place at our HOME. DM was always game for messes at her place and I laugh when I think about it. She was also one who always fixed to much food for our dinners and I do the same. We live what we learn in so many ways. Punk

Well it's either that or this budlight I've been drinking.....hiccup! :) KYgirl - Yep, they got the copper pipes too. Don't ya remember...we're building "up in the hills" of KY LOL. We're not in a neighborhood. There is only one house close to us. It's across the street and he didn't hear or see anything. You know, you would think that the people that buy the copper would wonder where Joe Blow gets a truckload of copper per week. I'll never understand the mentality of any of the people involved in this. Kharma seems to be trying to get my attention lately. I think I'll follow BJ's advice in another post and hide out for a while.

Update: heat is still on, which is good because it has been a pretty cold week. We met with the salesperson, who was the owner/founder's daughter. She was impressive with her knowledge of different systems. She even told us something we didn't know in that we once had a furnance in one of our hall closets. Then she said she'd go out to the car to get her coveralls and go under the crawlspace to evaluate our ductwork. I've never even been under there, LOL. So, she got us some very reasonable estimates on name brands and we will go with the one system. There are two rebates on the one, one from the manufactururer and one from the electric company, but the mfr rebate does not start until the 15th, though that's only next week. They will also credit us for the part they installed last weekend. I talked to my brother who works in commercial heating and cooling supply and he said this was a good system and a fair price. We've received good service from this company, so I feel confident going with them.

Recently Canada made Facebook clean up some of their Privacy Issues. I don't think it is right these apps sell our info or even have access to it. My telephone number is not on Facebook, I use a Yahoo account I can disable anytime and I have very few pictures. We have to remember too that these apps are not the only things that sell our info. Telephone companies, magazine publishers, gym memberships, many things you sign up for online and in real life sells our info to data and listing companies. I worked for a marketing company that would buy lists of names for their mailing lists Anytime you send for free coupons or enter contests your name is given to a third party and in most of those cases they retrieve more personal info than Facebook has on us and we willingly give it. Look at Google Earth or Street view - if anyone has your address they can find your house online. They mapped our city twice because they had images of a murder scene. The first time they came around you could see right into my living room. I am more concerned how that application is being used and who is using it. I posted about this issue on my Facebook status Monday morning. I was going to delete the 2 games I play that were mentioned but whatever info they needed they have already taken. Anne

Sounds like an interesting concept! Do the hosts have to feed everyone (25 people *faint*)? Glad you had a good time.

Your post sent me googling, as I have never heard of Home Routes. What a fabulous concept! It seems uniquely Canadian, doesn't it?

Your evening sounds perfect. What genre of music did your artist perform? Tell us about the food! Did you go home filled with music?

Yes, it is Canadian.

Jaxon (his real name) played guitar, banjo and a musical saw! LOL
He's in his late 30's I would say.

The food was finger food.......lots of cheeses, crackers and fruit, wines, beer, apple cider and water to drink. At a brief intermission she brought out the desserts......lots of mini squares, mini pumpkin muffins, cookies, that kind of thing, and the fruit and cheese still. Decaff coffee and regular coffee.

It was so much fun, lots of mingling and visiting and talk of music.

Jaxon lived in Saskatchewan and moved to Oklahoma City a few years ago. He's married, with a 5 year old, and this is only a couple-week tour. He loves staying in people's homes and socializing. He's very easy to talk to, so easy-going.

The hosts do this once a month, so it's a different musician every time.

I have a friend that does house concerts. K.C. Clifford. I'll have to watch for Jaxon playing The Blue Door, in Oklahoma City, they do small concerts.

That is such a great idea! I would love to attend those. I have had many musicians stay with us over the years and had them perform in my home or out doors. Maybe this trend will spread to this part of the country. I have a few great musician friends I will send that link to. Nice way to get introduced to another country.
