Comments (3)For evidence that compliance with "good manufacturing practices" doesn't necessarily protect consumers, here's a new report on Ayurvedic medicines. "The current study included 193 products randomly selected and purchased over the Internet. The researchers found that 20.7 percent contained metals. The rate in U.S. manufactured products was 21.7 percent, and in Indian products, it was 19.5 percent. Not surprisingly, almost 41 percent of rasa shastra products had a greater prevalence of metals, including high levels of lead and mercury. "Several Indian-manufactured rasa shastra medicines could result in lead and/or mercury ingestions 100 to 10,000 times greater than acceptable limits," the researchers wrote. Seventy-five percent of the products claimed to be manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practices." Note the comment from a spokesman for the American Herbal Products Associciation (an industry trade group). The AHPA emphasizes that heavy metals in the Ayurvedic medicine products are from hard-to-avoid soil contamination. Yet these potentially toxic metals are deliberately added to some Ayurvedic "herbal" products and it's apparently happening in the U.S. as well as abroad. It's one thing to consume such products without good evidence that they help - far worse to risk heavy metal poisoning as well. Comments (25)The above-mentioned remedy I previously purchased from my massage therapist finally ran out, and for several years I failed to try antioxidants again. Finally, I recently heard a medical researcher speak on PBS about Respiridol, a red grape-derived antioxidant, as possibly having a beneficial effect on the telomeres that begin to deteriorate on the ends of older peoples' chromosomes (apparently based on research with mice, I think he said), and wandered into a local health food store in search of some. Finding Resperidol prohibitively expensive, I purchased several bottles of other fruit-based antioxidants that were on sale for the incredibly low price of $3 a bottle and have taken some several times when I was not feeling very well (I have begun Spring gardening and usually feel like a zombie for the first several weeks of resumed gardening activity). The antioxidants have made me feel better each time I have taken some. Additionally, I acquired a bottle of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) capsules at a local Indian food market, and have found that when I have onerous tasks to do that taking one 400 mg capsule gives me the energy to get the job done. Today I felt like death warmed over, but an hour after taking a capsule I was able to plant three blueberry bushes, two windflowers, three tansys, and a wormwood; move several medium-sized rocks; and begin another small spaghetti garden section by spreading out some bagged leaves and bagged composted humus. Ginseng, which I eventually read was really mainly a remedy for males, never had much of an effect on me, so I was really surprised....See MoreFreshPet Select Cat Food
Comments (4)The ingredients are fine and protein (adjusted for dry matter) is 46% (30% is goal). This is much better food than what you will usually find in a supermarket....See MoreVitamins & Supplements, seasonal consumption
Comments (13)Eat citrus (its in season in the winter anyhow!) and make homemade bone stocks that you can use to cook with to get the glucosamine, etc (from the gelatin in the stock.) have some every day. Get Great Lakes gelatin if you want to add more to your diet. Skip the expensive supplements with their additives and fillers and enjoy the real foods where it comes from (and get the added benefit of other vitamins and minerals they contain.) I'm not anti-supplement at all, especially in the case of D and magnesium, but C, glucosamine and chrondroitan are easy to get through diet and are already in the combinations that make them bioavailable and easily absorbed. Recent studies are showing oversupplementation may cause liver damage so more isn't necessarily better- your body will only absorb so much of anything but your liver has to process whatever you put in your body....See Moresleeperblues
